We joke here sometimes that in America you get your licence with a package of butter! But it's true! Really? $25??????

I've had about 20 lessons I guess and I paid about $65 per lesson.....and that was 13 years ago!

Well, since I don't have a licence, I wouldn't know, but I'm pretty sure it's MUCH more expensive than 25 USD.

I have this feeling about almost anything. Been to two hobby shops this week and honestly - crafts are *so* not for poor people here.

It probably depends on the state... in Wisconsin it's $35 for learner permit... and I just renewed my license last year and it was around $38 for 8 years... then each year it's around $90 to renew car plates, per vehicle... :)

When I learned how to drive, I didn't go through my school (which would have been free) because I was one of the oldest kids in my class (birthday in the fall) - and it was around $250 for lessons - oohhh...that was 21 years ago. LOL! I think now it's around $400 for lessons - most schools in my area have done away with their drive eds programs (thank God - while I was in high school, we lost 2-3 people a year to car accidents!)

We've been told for the last 6 months that he would be deploying about this time. We made tons of plans aorund it, etc....and then yesterday they officially gave word that he's not going to Iraq, and now we wait until spring to find out when he heads to afghanistan....
 
Wow Jen. I guess it's a good thing, but I can see how it kinda puts a kink in things.

Marla, I'm sorry your in-laws are such jerks. Grrrr.

I paid $300 for Sam to take driving lessons and it is required in the state of WA for them to get their permit....but that was over a year ago and she really hasn't learned and doesn't have the desire to actually drive...which SUKCS for me :(
 
I paid $25 for mine, I think, and it's good for 8 years, yeah (or something- they'll let me know when I renew)...

It cost us $300 for lessons (including drive time, etc), and I went through a private agency. Through our high school, lessons are only like $100 total, but my parents really wanted me to learn through a police officer, which is who taught my lessons (his other job was teaching driving, other than being a cop, he had a whole school and ran it with someone else, a teacher). So, mine were more expensive than what most of my friends paid.

In fact, before they changed the laws here, a lot of exchange students would come and get drivers licenses while they were here... but now that is against the laws here, so they can't save money that way.

Oh, and where I live, when I got mine, you didn't HAVE to take lessons, but if you didn't, then you had to take a test with a driving instructor and that idea scared me to death-- the lessons are what most people choose!

And at least he's going to be around for Thanksgiving and Christmas right? I can't imagine my husband being gone this time of year.

I have a friend who's hubby is in the airforce, when he gets deployed it means more $$$ and they have been burnt before I think, thinking he'll be going and planning on that extra coinage . .

Marla, so sorry you have craptacular in laws . . lol . . I am really lucky that I dont have any at all, tho this also means that my kids only have one set of grandparents. Hubby's brother is 'Poppy Raymond' and his wife is 'Nanny Janet' so it kinda works out ..

Scrappy shopping is fun...but for some reason my internet is sucking and its taking forever to download anything.

I hate it when he is gone at the holidays, but I've done it before(3x) and can do it again. Now he'll just miss the holidays in 2012.

But grrrrr to the military at the same time. I can only imagine how frustrating that would be.
 
Jen, I totally can see how that would be hard when you've been gearing up and planning on one thing to have it uprooted and pushed out another 6 months. It's an emotional rollar coaster, I'm sure. My BIL is in Afghanistan now, and there have been ::tons:: of changes in when he would leave, how long he'll stay, when he's coming home. I think it's really hard for families to deal with that. My heart goes out to you and I truly appreciate the sacrifice people in the armed forces and their families make every day for the service they provide for our country.

Happy note, at least you get him for the holidays this year, and you can try and enjoy them doubly good to gear up for next year. I agree with Marla, that there is a bigger plan and for some reason right now is not his time. I can't imagine how hard it is to be preparing for something like that and to have it postponed, but I'm sure there's a reason, even though it's not apparent to you at this time.

{hugs} sweetie. I'm sure once you've had some time to digest this and process this, you will be so exctied to have him with you for these holidays. You definitely should get yourself some digi goodies to help you get through this trial, Donna has a great point! :)

Marly sorry about your in-laws. :( I hope they get nicer to you, as they will be around for along time I'm guessing by how young you guys look in your super cute wedding photo. That's a hard thing.

In Holland you only have one licence plat per vehicle. And drivers licences are valid for ten years.

But no. I digiscrap because it's fun (and take a look at your yearly costs for digi kits... you might be surprised at the amount, heh). I also do hybrid that has cost me quite some money (papers, printer, various tools, punches, ribbons, buttons, glues, we could go on, and let's not forget solutions for storing these, eh).

And normally (even though not lately) I also do other crafts, so you can say I've spent a fortune on these things already. Hobbies have a tendency to multiply, and there's only one me, sadly, so I can never ever do everything I'd love to. :-)

I saw some cards lately on the net and the lady put the cost to each, and honestly I was chuckling when reading those, she would never make them this cheap here. Which is not a complaint, just the general truth. The truth is - if you want cheap cards, buy them ready-made. :-)

Andrea, my Cards had THE MOST AWESOME game last night! We won 16-7 (yes, that is not a typo!). Albert Pujols got 3 HOME RUNS!! (I'm sure even you non-baseball fans have heard of him) The Texas fans (we were in their stadium) were total jerks and even threw a ball at one of our players during a play to try to upset the play. JERKS. That is one thing about St. Louis Cardinals fans. We say that we're the best baseball fans in all of baseball and I know I'm biased, but I really think we are. We don't boo other players and would never fathom throwing something on the field. I'm just kinda amazed...

OMG it's ridiculously hard, but I just keep thinking of my family, keep telling myself that THAT'S IT no more killing myself . . I wont go into some of the graphic and distressing images I put through my head to keep me on track, it would either gross you out or make you think I was a psycho, but I'm doing everything I can to make myself MAKE IT!!

I think it helps too that I've told absolutely everyone that I'm quitting, so I dont want to let everyone down or have to lie about it lol
 
Kate, sports make some people go completely insane! I'm not a football fan, but my facebook status currently reads this:

I'm not even a football fan and I am shocked by the hatefulness posted on here last night. Last time I checked, football wasn't an excuse to belittle your friends and family.

OU lost to Texas Tech last night. My facebook was filled with rude, hateful comments from OSU fans. It baffles me completely. I've never been that into sports, except for maybe when I was playing. And these people aren't players and most of them didn't even go a big state college. It just makes me shake my head and wonder what has gotten into people.

But, woo-hoo Cardinals. That's a BIG win!

WOOT, WOOT, Kate! That's so awesome they killed them! That's too bad about the fans being psycho. I hate bad stuff like that in sports (part of why I tend to not get involved, I hate bad refs that call things wrong, and it all gets too competitve for me) some people are really nuts and will do ridiculous things - it's sad.

Either way, the Cards rubbed their face in it, and it serves them right! I hope they can keep the edge over the Rangers.

Hang in there sweetie. I bet in a few more days, once you've had more time to process this, it will be a happy thing. I agree, it's way hard to not know why things happen - and it can be so frustrating. I truly feel like this is happening for a reason. How is your hubby taking the news? Is he relieved?

We're having friends over tonight and I just don't wanna. I want to sit here and scrap and wash the 40000 loads of laundry I have and catch up on all my DVR'd shows. I know I will have fun once they are here, but man......I'm a party pooper right now

I know exactly what you mean, Jen. Sometimes I don't wanna do anything but sit at my computer or in front of the TV. And having friends over so soon after a vacation...doesn't sound appealing to me, either.

the only reason we are doing it tonight is because my friend works evenings, so we can't get together during the week, and next weekend they will be gone for a football game...so we can't do it then either. we try to get together twice a month to play cards, I'm just not in the mood tonight...
 
Are you going to play Hand and Foot? I play that with my grandma. She's coming home this week (she lives here 6 months of the year and lives in Montana the other 6 months), so I'll be playing with her every other weekend or so for the next 6 months.
