wow what a long night

You know I almost expect that when something really great happens to us something pretty bad is going to follow. My husband started feeling pressure and pain behind his right eye sometime yesterday. I tried to get him to go to the hospital or at least urgent care. Nope. He wouldn't. He woke this morning with the headache still. I told him to go to the hospital again. Still no. He said he felt better but really didn't. We went to see the baby. I told him to tell me if he started feeling bad but he didn't say anything. We left after about two hours made it maybe 3 miles and then he got sick. He did not have much choice at that time but to go to the ER. Luckily we were still close to the one my daughter is at with the baby and it is really slow there. So my son-in-law says he will have his mom drive him to us and he would drive us back so that Johnny does not have to drive. We get to the ER and there are a few people there but he gets taken right back after I explain for what feels like the millionth time about the car accident and his injuries. He has a neurological exam and goes for a CT scan. It looks normal. Then comes the scary part. They say he needs a spinal tap to eliminate meningitis and bleeding from the brain that wasn't seen in the CT scan. No bleeding and initially no signs of infection (they are doing a culture which we will get the results in 48 hours). We leave with a referral to a neurologist. So basically just one more doctor to add to the growing list of specialists he is seeing (now it will be a neurologist, cardiologist, digestive & liver, pulmonologist & pain management plus the regular monthly to bi-monthly primary care dr visits). He is still sick. Still in pain. And still cannot really see well out of his right eye. And we have no idea why. :( Just sucks that it cannot be just good for a little while. This is all totally new. We knew his eye was damaged in the accident but he just had his eyes checked on Friday and he was perfectly fine. Did great on the eye check.

Ooh, poor man! Did they rule out temporal arteritis? Not saying he HAS it, but it's not something they typically look for, so can be overlooked, and it needs to be treated quickly. My uncle had it.

Oh my goodness Jessica you must feel so helpless and worried. I too hope you will get answers and of course a remedy so your husband and you will have one less thing to worry about. Hugs!

He was diagnosed with something in his eye. I cannot remember what it is now. But there is no real treatment. Basically one of his pupils does not react to light how it is supposed to and it has something to do with the optic nerve being damaged. But he never had a headache like this before and he does complain about not being able to see close up but never not really being able to see anything from his right eye at all. Not like blindness but like just everything suddenly went blurry. So I have no clue what is wrong. I finally got some sleep around 2 this morning I think but he says he has been up most of the night and just been dealing with the headache still. Hasn't gotten sick though. They had to give him four doses of zofran before he would stop getting sick and he was still feeling nauseated. But we still do not have any answers about him coughing up lots of phlem and sometimes blood. No answers why he gets out of breath walking just out to check the mail. No answers why his ribs are still hurting him so much after 15 months. I am worried he may have pleurisy again but I don't know. That accident messed him up really bad and it feels like it is going to be this way for the rest of his life. I am used to him being in pain in his back. We already know he has degenerative disk disorder (think that is what it is called). His back was messed up pretty badly from two previous car accidents. We know he has nerve damage down his whole right side. But is that all connected to all of it. His dr said that even though something looked ok initially the ICU dr's could have missed something small that suddenly becomees something big.

wow, Jessica that is a lot you have to deal with! I am so sorry. It must be hard for your husband to have to accept that his body isn't doing what it is supposed to be doing. And to have that pain and feel sick and tired...It's just awful.
These things are also hard for loved ones. It's just so frustrating to not being able to fix things and make them all better! I wish you and your hubbie lots of strenght and sincerly hope they will find a way to make him feel better one way or the other!

I hope he feel better soon. It's got to be completely frustrating to have so many health issues. If he doesn't have neck pain, it's probably not meningitis, but I'm sure they are testing him as a precaution.

I think the worst part is he went from normal pain before the first accident he had in 2006 to excruciating pain after it in his back. He kept working though. Then he, me and our youngest were rear-ended by ssomeone who just was not paying attention, saw the light was green I guess but nobody had moved yet and he hit us pretty hard. Made his back worse. The dr's have all said with the damage he has sustained in his back they do not understand how he is walking around at all. Then this last accident in 2011 pretty much messed up every organ he has on the right side of his body. He cannot walk right. I cant explain it but its like he cannot feel his right foot so it causes him to walk differently. His eye is damaged. His liver is damaged. Diaphragm. Lungs. Possibly the heart. And he had some brain injuries. Asking him if he has had a headache like this before last night does not really do any good because he would not remember. And I am not sure if he has or not because the last 15 months kinda all blur together of just one dr appt after another and lots of ER visits and hospital stays and test after test after test. I am glad he is here with me because they did not think he would make it through that accident. But I wish he was not always in so much pain.

I'm actually shocked with the headaches and stuff he had been having that he hasn't been referred to a neurologist before now. I hope they figure it out and he feels better soon

Meg his dr is kinda ticking me off. I want to just get all the referrals at once and just take care of everything. He is disabled so he is home everyday. It is not like he is taking off of work and has to work around certain hours. But she wants to do one at a time. First the opthamologist, then the digestive/liver, then cardiologist and now finally the pulmonologist & neurologist. Why not just take care of all the referrals, get it over with so he can hopefully get some sort of answers or therapy/treatment....something. It took them three stays in the hospital & a colonoscopy/endoscopy to figure out his gall bladder had been damaged in the accident and had stopped working. The dr told us last night if his liver had damage chances are really good the gall bladder might have too and should have been checked first thing when he was admitted the first time. They did not check that until I asked about it. Then his liver/digestive dr was like "Oh he still has his gall bladder?" Ummm yea. He told you over two years ago he has never had an operation....it is frustrating and it makes me angry & sad because all I want is to have some semblance of my husband and our lives back. I feel selfish saying that because I am not the one in pain but I miss doing things with him...besides doctors appointments we rarely go anywhere.

The dr there did not mention that but I looked it up and he does not have many of the symptoms. The dr last night seems to think it is a migraine but did not give him any migraine medication to see if it helps. When I got a migraine and it lasted several days the dr in the ER gave me medication for migraines not for the pain and after two doses and a couple hours it finally subsided enough I could go home and sleep. It was after that I was switched to maintenance medication instead of trying to treat them as they come. Ive had a few in the last two years but not nearly as bad as from the accident until they got me on the right medication. Mine seem to come on when I am in places with a lot of noise or in the sun for extended periods of time. We can call and make an appt. with the neurologist tomorrow and with his primary care dr as well. I am pretty sure that as of right now all the specialists he needs to see he has referrals to. Other then a surgeon at some point but his pain management dr does not think surgery would really be the answer because he has so much damage in his back and my husband is terrified of having surgery on his back. We have known a lot of people who went in for surgery on their back and then needed one after the other for years and years.

thanks everyone. It feels more like 15 years then 15 months sometimes. Thankfully after some caffeine & ibuprofen and another dose of promethazine (nausea medication) he is sleeping and pain is relieved mostly
