Well... I'm pretty far left over here...
who am I kidding, I'm as far left as you can get.
but...
I could care less about recycling and I think granola and tree hugging should be a strictly squirrel occurrence. And there's no way anyone's going to get me to camp. And I think cloth diapers are horrifying.
That's right, I'm a 'dox.
See, this is how I would describe MOST Californians. We may be liberal in our political viewpoints but in general most people are not what I would describe as crunchy or treehugging. Those are mostly just the Santa Cruz/Berkeley hard-core hippies.
And as for recycling, the reason it's big in CA is because the governments (city/state) made it a priority and made it something that is both easy and cost effective for people to do. At least where I'm from, they give you a huge recycling bin, a huge green waste bin and a tiny trash can and then charge you for any extra trash. So it's in your best interest to recycle rather than throwing it all in the trash.
Here in Colorado we don't recycle because it's not really an easy option. The first trash company our HOA went through didn't even have a recycling program. They recently switched to a new company but even they CHARGE you just to get a recycling bin. Coming from CA, I seriously feel like we've gone back in time 10+ years. If you want people to seriously recycle, make it the easiest and best option - don't punish them with extra fees.
