Thanks for staying sweet!

Can I just say that I truly appreciate the tolerance and understanding/acceptance of this community? There is another forum and people keep bringing up stuff about my religion and some people have become really offensive. It angers me and makes me sad. I keep finding myself running back here to get a little dose of sweetness!

Some people need a lesson on how to respectfully speak about another's religion... "weird" and "strange" are offensive words to me. Some people were saying how they thought it was so neat that everyone was being so respectful, while I found several people's posts rather offensive and ignorant.

Sorry, just needed to vent.

If it's the forum I think it is and have been a recent part of, I am absolutely offended that the site owner would even allow that. I was getting SO ticked off until I realized that it doesn't do any good. There was a thread about what religion we are - so I answered "I am a Christian who is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints" and snarky jerk had the nerve to say something like "I don't mean to be offensive, but why do I have to call those 17 yo pimple faced bike riders elder." Now how can you NOT be offended by a snarky comment like that?

I LOVE it here and my experience this weekend elsewhere has really made me realize how much I love it here. There is great respect for everyone no matter what race, religion, gender, nationality or even political affiliation.

I totally missed that thread too, which it sounds like I should be glad I did...sorry you were offended like that, sweetie :( ((HUGS))

Paula, I'm referring specifically to the baptism thread, but I saw your posts in the other one too and found her rude as well. As for the baptism thread, I'm pretty sure if it had been about... let's say, Judaism... the thread would have been stopped.

We have a hot topics forum on my mommy's board, and it can get REALLY nasty at times. It's ok to have differing opinions, but it's the presentation of those opinions that matters.

Ok, that's exactly the one that I am talking about. I finally decided that it does NO good to even try and explain. People will believe what they want.

Yeah, I can see people being curious and wanting to understand what we believe... but this woman asked a question... this one LDS gal answered really respectfully and tried to answer everyone's questions. She just got eaten alive!!! It's like they didn't care what she said, they just kept saying stuff that was completely false even though she was like, no that's not what we believe... blah blah blah. So it seemed to me they really weren't curious at all, just wanting to voice something about our religion they thought was "weird." :cursing:

I try not to look at that thread anymore, but I can't help but click when I see there's a new post sometimes... I just need to stay away.

I agree about this. And sadly, it's not just this thread. I've noticed many threads in that forum where people have posted inquiries that seem more intended to argue and pick apart others' beliefs rather than intended to understand them.

I'm so sorry you and others have been offended. :(

Also, wanted to say per your original post, Megan. That I too treasure this community for the reasons you mentioned and so many more. I've always felt everyone here is respectful and kind and genuinely caring for each other.

Because I'm a total masocist, I had to go find that thread. I'm not LDS and before I could get through one page my blood was boiling. I think the question was asked just so they could say why they thought it was wrong. I've never understood the need for "hot topics" type sections on boards. They ALWAYS end up bringing out the worst in people, like its open season on being mean and hurtful. I love when people start with "No offense but.." cuz if you didn't really want to offend you would have kept your fingers quiet!

I understand, Megan. I saw that thread and knew it wasn't even worth going there. I love it here so much!! I've found it's important to stay where it's positive and welcoming. No need to go anywhere else, IMO!

When people start with "No offense" they know they're going to be offensive. Why do they think that if they preface it with that it's going to be any less offensive?

Megan I am sorry that you felt that way ~ That was not fair or right - with that said -
I love you all  - the heart is the truest measure of a person - not where they worship or if they worship at all -
I really try and not get into any of those conversations on line - they are pointless and tend to get mean -

I have a saying that is my personal motto and is behind the reason that I joined the Army (to defend the freedoms that we have)

I might not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.

Voltaire - My fav philosopher -

I'm sorry there's prejudice against whichever religion. After all, here in the US, wasn't our country partially founded on the principle of freedom of religion? The worst I would have said is it's "different" - that is, different from what I believe, but that does not make it "weird" or wrong.
I studied all religions in College (my concentration in my studies was religion), so I learned to tolerate all religious viewpoints. I've learned to respect other religion's ways as well when I married into my husband's family, half of which were Jehovah's Witnesses. For instance I would love to celebrate my sister-in-laws' birthdays, but I respect their non-observance of those celebrations.
What I get annoyed at is the intolerance of others to believe your own way. That is, people who criticize/mock/chastise others for believing a different religion just annoy the heck out of me. The base religion is pretty much the same for most of us, just how we believe and practice are different. I guess I'm glad I didn't see the other thread (and if it's where I think it is, I can't get to it anyways), because I think I would have been upset at the intolerance of some, too.
Nonnie - I love that Voltaire saying - so perfect....

No offense, but your beliefs are wrong and weird. But I totally don't mean any harm by that. :)

hahahhaha.. yeah, "no offense" and smilies do not make it any better. lol

I saw that thread too, and it was like a train wreck. I was totally offended by it (another LDS scrapper, here) and couldn't understand why the thread kept going and going and going...

Anything that makes me sad or angry isn't worth taking up my time to read, so I quickly left that site.

I love SSD. :)

I guess my problem is that I'm just not sure why people think its even appropriate to comment on someone else's religion in any sort of public forum.

Its just asking for trouble because not matter how many times you say, "no offense" or "I don't mean to be rude", someone is going to take offense and it will, inevitably, come off as rude.

Some people are so tacky...

I read the Baptism thread. I guess since I'm not LDS, I didn't see it as that offensive of a thread. I see both sides of the arguement, and I didn't think people were being that disrespectful. Many of them disagreed with the practice, but I don't think there were many rude responses. I think both sides explained their thinking or beliefs pretty well.

I saw the Baptism thread but since (and honextly I don't want to be rude) the subject was not interesting for me, I just skip it.

I post my religion (Roman Catholic) in the other thread withour firther reading because I can't avoid myself from any poll... LOL

And when I read your OP I though "OMG she maybe venerate Cactus, or pigs or she put cats in bottles". When you said Mormom I ROFL because as someone said half od the US comunity are.

Honey we have goats, llamas, tacos, tatas... for me if fine you want run naked in the sun. Just ask you to use sunscreen and not show me a picture... LOL

Hugs!

Completely off-topic:

I totally agree, La.

I can't eat pudding skin. How does it grow onto the pudding? It reminds me of how we scab over when we're injured, and I'd rather DIE than eat a SCAB. As if I was some kind of wild animal. *shudder*

hijack....but ewwwwwwwwww....I LIKED puddin' skin till I read this, thankyouverymuch! LOL
