Professional Family Photos - The Good and the Bad

So, we had professional family photos taken on Sunday. The photographer sent me a preview, and some of them are absolutely wonderful, like this one of my DD:

And then there's this. :eek: Hello, awkwardness and multiple bad angles! I can't stop laughing.

As a photographer, I love a well composed, well staged photo, but I also love candid shots that, like you said, may not be ideally positioned or framed, but the feeling, the "realness" comes through. Even though it may have felt awkward to you, to me it looks cute, it looks endearing. I like it. that hunch in your shoulders as you look at him smiling at you....so cute! Everyone is different, some like staged, some like candid. But I like them both, so both of these shots are keepers IMO.

Your daughter is sooo pretty!!! I love the one of you two. Even if it feels awkward to you, I think it's pretty cute! I love the looks you're giving :D and the light is really pretty!
 
I agree with everyone else... Your daughter is gorgeous! And she looks like you!
I like the second photo too.
 
Thanks, girls! Y'all are so sweet. Maybe I'm totally crazy, but I still feel like that second one kinda looks like I'm ducking to get away from him! :p
 
Ooohhh, amazing shots! Both are extremely beautiful!!! Can't wait to see how you'll scrap them (if you plan to do it, of course)
 
Posing is definitely the hardest part of professional photography and what works with some people doesn't work with others. I don't think my hubby and I could pull off this pose because we never stand around looking meaningfully into each other's eyes, so it just would never be natural for us! You guys are pretty cute though!

I totally see what you're saying - like you're kind of like "mmm k I'm just going to sneak out from under this guy's arm right now" :D I think it's cute though!

We've done family photos twice now and I've felt the same way about our photos. Like why does everyone else look cute and I look like a total dork? :D but I just chalk it up to the fact that we are all way more critical of ourselves because when I show the same photos to Adam, he thinks he looks crazy and I look cute.
 
Great photos! I love the looks you're giving each other. And your daughter is beautiful. So are you! I think we're too critical of ourselves - they're fantastic!!

And that photo of you both are cute! I love those kind of photos, in fact, ones that aren't staged and just perfectly 'us'. That is what we asked for the last year's family photos and we were happy with them.

Yes - this is so true! Posing is so hard...I don't know many people who stand around looking at each other :p especially once you have kids. I always tried when I was shooting other people's photos and trying to get those more posed photos they said they wanted to try and joke about how awkward it was for them, or tell them to whisper sweet nothings to each other like how the dishes need done and the kids were driving them crazy that at least usually got a laugh.

I think it is a cute photo though, and the look between the two of you is all in the eyes, lots of emotion there that is definitely not something that can be faked
 
Thanks, girls! :o It's so true that we are far more critical of ourselves than anyone else would be. I HATE having my photo taken (which I know is ironic since I'm a scrapbooker), but I'm making more of an effort to have nice family photos done regularly since the years with my DD are just flying by! :crying:
 
While it's not a picture I would print and hang on my wall, I like the looks you are giving each other. It's one that would be fun to have, but not see every single day. I love the way Logan's hair has grown out. It's so flattering. Side note, I had professional family pictures done in Charleston myself years ago and those photos are still on my wall. I love Charleston, so pretty.
