Problem with sizing...

Help!! I'm doing a 12x12 layout for my sister-in-law. The pictures she sent me are 72 ppi. When I open the picture in PSE 7, they show to be about 14" wide by 11" high. BUT..when I drag them onto my 12x12 lo, they are only about 3 1/2" wide by 2 1/2" high. I'm thinking this has to do with the 72ppi right?

What I did, was resize the image size and then changed the picture to 300 ppi. That enlarged it but it did pixilate it a bit as well. But, when I then dragged this resized picture to my lo and dragged the corners to resize the picture smaller, it seemed to help and it appears less pixilated.

I'm afraid that when we go to print, however, it won't look as good printed as it does on my screen. I enlarged the size of my lo on my screen so that 1" on my screen is about 1" in real life so I can see what it looks like and it isn't too bad.

Does this make sense? Is there another way of going about this?

A 14x11 image (72ppi) is the exact same size as a 3.36x2.64 image (300ppi) because the number of pixels is exactly the same.

IME, resizing before putting the image in the layout gives me fuzzy images when I print. I tend to drag the image to the 300ppi layout first, then resize. Fewer issues for me that way. No matter what though, you're likely to lose some quality because increasing image size just does that.

You can try resizing the image 110 percent until it's the size you want, rather than doing it all at once. I do this for print things all the time, and it's not as bad as just jumping up to the large size. I have done it as much as 6-7 times and it prints fine.

Yes. Drag the picture onto your layout. Then enlarge it 110% and click the check. Then enlarge 110% again and click the check mark. Keep doing this until you get it the size you want.

The sizing thing is definately the pixels like you thought. Computers don't measure things in inches but in pixels. So 3 inches at 300 ppi is 900 pixels. In 72 ppi that would be 900/72 which is 12.5 inches. They look different inches to you but to the computer they are both 900 pixels.

Could she re-send you the photos full sized? I finally taught my sil to zip a folder and send it to me by sendspace so I can have all full size photos. I send her the 12x12 layouts I make for her that way too, and then she can just download it, and send it off to Costco to get her layouts made.

Thanks for the input! I got my SIL to resend the pics and she had them in a much larger format so I was able to use those. I feel much better about them now!
