Pioneer Picture Book

Hi Ladies!! You all are so helpful and supportive, I thought maybe you might be able to answer my question.

I'm going to visit Salt Lake City with my son this summer (we are going to take a train ride! choo-choo!). I'm researching our trip (which is so much fun!) I've been looking up things to do and it looks like we will have lots of fun things to keep us busy!!

Although we are not LDS ourselves, I would like to take him to the important historical sites that are available to the public. I'm wondering if you could recommend any reading that would be great for kids to learn about LDS pioneers and history? I would particularly like to use it as a spring board to discuss Freedom of Religion. My son is only 7, so a picture book meant for younger kids I think would be great. But it would also be cool if there were any easy-ish chapter books I could use as a read aloud.

Any suggestions for reading? Any favorite spots to visit in Salt Lake?

Thanks!!! :hugs:

my favorite spot to visit in salt lake (my MIL lives an hour south) is the hogle zoo, but I'm not sure if that's the type of thing you're looking for... I don't have any ideas for a book either

Most major cities have an LDS bookstore you can browse to see if there is something to read there. You can check your local yellow pages to see where your nearest one is. If you want to order online, you can go to deseretbook.com or places like that and do a search for children's books on church history.

Here is also a link to the historic sites you can check out: http://www.lds.org/locations/historical-sites?lang=eng

On the left side of the page, you can also click on visitor's centers and it will take you here: http://www.lds.org/locations/visitors-centers?lang=eng

Looks like there's quite a few things to check out. Temple square has so much to check out. We can never seem to get around everywhere in enough time when we are there. The northern visitor's center on temple square has wonderful interactive displays that kids will enjoy in the downstairs area of the building. Also, across the street from temple square is the church history museum that has great hands on displays for kids to check out.

Hope you enjoy your trip. Have fun!

This is The Place would definitely be a great place to go. Another place I would recommend is the Church History Museum. It's right across the street from Temple Square, so if you're planning on doing a tour of Temple Square, you can do it on the same day. They always have fun interactive displays for kids. I'm sure you would enjoy it.

Another fun thing would be to go to a rehearsal of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir. They open up their Thursday night rehearsals to the public. I'm a bit biased about the MoTab, but I think you would love it. :)

We just went in November. We only went to Temple Square and loved it. My husband loved the tour of the Conference Center because the art there is amazing. The kids (4 & 2) loved the Church History Museum. There's a fun interactive area just for kids. And I ditto Lydia on seeing MoTab. DH and I have watched their weekly broadcast since we were dating and I finally got to meet his Aunt Beth and watch her sing in the choir live. Really fun, and because it's a rehearsal it's pretty casual so you can just walk in and enjoy.

When my mom only has a short visit during her stamping conventions, she always visits the Christus statue in the Visitors Center there on Temple Square. It's beautiful!

I would love to hear the choir!! I read that children under 8 can't attend the free concerts, but maybe the rehearsal is different?

That's the main reason we went to the rehearsal. We took our kids (4 and 2). The rehearsal is a rehearsal, so the choir isn't in robes, you'll hear the commentary of the conductor (it was actually my favorite part, but probably from being in choirs and singing some of his arrangements gave him choir-nerd celebrity status for me), and they will probably sing the songs twice, but it was absolutely beautiful and I was so glad we went. Thursday night starting at 7, and I would recommend it to anyone.

Mack Wilberg deserves his celebrity status. I've been lucky enough to sing under his direction many many times, and he is AMAZING! Definitely take in a rehearsal, Kristi!

And, if you have time for a little meetup, I'd love that, too. I'm only 15 mins. from SLC and would love meeting up with you. :)
