My son has Vitiligo, but no real health issues with it. There is a concern for skin cancer, but he understands how important it is that he be careful in the sun. It is pretty noticeable, even though he is light skinned, and while he does not care to be asked about it, he handles it all well and has never been depressed over it. I don't know if it is because he is just good in his own skin, no matter the color, or because we have not dwelled on it. The eyelashes get a lot of notice as does the pure white soul patch in his beard.
Thyroid issues are also common in a person with Vitiligo and my son's thyroid stopped working when he hit puberty. He is on medicine for that and as long as he takes it and gets his blood work done every 6 to 12 months to monitor his levels, he is fine.
Good luck with your son and his diagnosis.
