we're taking Ryan in to the doctor to get looked at tomorrow. his eyelashes started turning white this past spring, but we weren't too worried since everything we could find that would cause it isn't like health threatening. this past week though we noticed that it has spread to the skin around his eye as well. we still aren't worried-worried, but it won't be exactly fun either.

Good luck, Trish! Getting stuff like this figured out is never fun.

Definitely keep us posted. In the meantime, lots of P&PT! Hopefully it's not causing any discomfort. The skin tone difference is really subtle in the photo. Are you thinking it might be Vitiligo?

Yup. I was only about 75% sure, then tonight before bed we had him strip so we could see if there were any other spots to mention when we go in. Turns out he has 3 or 4 large ones that almost completely band around his underwear line. And those are so noticeable with as tan as his chest is. I mean it's like "how the hell did we miss that?!"

Oh, wow. Ugh... Big hugs!!!!! I hope the doctor is helpful and has some good information for you.

Awww... big hugs to you and your little guy!!!
I don't know too much about vitiligo, but do you have a black light by any chance? I read this online... "Skin with vitiligo, when exposed to a black light, will glow yellow, green or blue, in contrast to healthy skin which will have no reaction".

I wish you all the best with this, I know how nerve wracking and scary things like this can be, but keep your chin up, and try not to worry too much.

*hugs*

Sarah

there's nothing i hate more than 'mystery' health issues...so stressful!! i hope you get all the answers you need!!

Will be thinking of you - vitiligo was my first immediate thought but I didn't want to say anything until after you had been to the doc.

aw.. good luck today trish! I actually have a bit of vitiligo I believe.. granted I'm so stinking pale I just never brought it to anyones attention lol... but I have a big white-er? area on the back of my neck (and have had a small-ish white area of hair since i was 2, but it's unnoticeable as it's not a top layer).. I'm just extra careful to either leave my hair down or wear proper sunblock there. hope you get some answers!

My son has Vitiligo, but no real health issues with it. There is a concern for skin cancer, but he understands how important it is that he be careful in the sun. It is pretty noticeable, even though he is light skinned, and while he does not care to be asked about it, he handles it all well and has never been depressed over it. I don't know if it is because he is just good in his own skin, no matter the color, or because we have not dwelled on it. The eyelashes get a lot of notice as does the pure white soul patch in his beard.

Thyroid issues are also common in a person with Vitiligo and my son's thyroid stopped working when he hit puberty. He is on medicine for that and as long as he takes it and gets his blood work done every 6 to 12 months to monitor his levels, he is fine.

Good luck with your son and his diagnosis.
