hybrid albums Q

So, I have a wee bit of an obsession with shaped albums(chipboard and acrylic). I have a ton of them that I bought on clearance at various scrapbooking stores and haven't used.
In the past, I've always been able to find digital templates that worked very closely with the shapes I have and used them to get a rough shape, but I've never been happy with how everything has fit. Now I'm wanting to work on some of the odd shaped albums, but I'm not sure how to go about creating good templates for them.
Would you trace them on paper and then scan it? Scan the actual chipboard pages and create a template for them? What about the acrylics??

And then adhering...what do you recommend for adhering the printed pages to chipboard? to acrylic? I really hate mod podge, I always end up with nasty film when I use it it seems, so I'd prefer something else. I'm making the road trip to hobby lobby next week for my birthday and can pick up real adhesive if I need to get something beyond what I already have as well.

i'd use golden matte gel medium to adhere the pages. it's less annoying than mod podge - you put it on with a foam brush. when i'm lazy i use my atg gun and just run it over the entire paper and adhere it. but the edges always curl up then.

i would print the paper out and then adhere it to the pages - then using a kraft knife on a glass mat cut them out. that's how i've always done it.

I scan the actual chipboard and make a template... and for adhering... I just use a tape runner getting as close to the edge as I can... I've never had problems with paper curling - as long as I'm using presentation/doubleside photo paper.... and my son plays and plays with my shaped albums and they still look pretty darn good. ;)

scanning the pages seems to be working pretty good so far. now to adapt some layered templates to my pages. Of course I'd go for the funkiest shaped one first...that has cutouts to peek through to other layers, lol

If you don't like cutting the paper edges off - or get a jaggedy cut when you do, just grab one of those fingernail emory boards - with the foam between the two sides - and sand the paper away. It gives a gorgeously smooth edge! Ink the edges if you'd like afterward, or apply sealer just the edges.

I use Modge Podge to adhere the paper to the chipboard (using a foam brush), so I usually use that to seal the edges. I haven't had one curl up yet. I've also used xyron machines to apply permanent adhesive, but it is soooo sticky that I can never get the paper down on the chipboard straight with no wrinkles or bubbles - at least with ModPodge I have time to move it around and smooth things out.

I am loving this thread! Where do you get your chipboard and acrylic albums? We have an Archiver's, Hobby Lobby, Michael's and JoAnn's. I haven't been in Archiver's and I haven't really looked beyond the traditional albums at the other stores. I'm just starting to do more hybrid projects, but I always knew I'd love them. I never got into paper scrapping, though I wanted to, but am in love with the idea of digitally scrapping first, then making a hybrid album.

I get most of mine from Archivers or a local Scrapbooking Stores (which now all of our LSS are out of business :()... the big box craft stores have them, but at least around me they have a very, very limited selection. Sometimes you can luck out at Michaels and they will have them in the kid's craft area or in the $1 bins. My favorite brands are Maya Road and KraiserCraft... which can be found for sale around the web. ;)

Michaels, Ben Franklin, Hobby Lobby, AC Moore, etc. Almost ALWAYS in the clearance section. The LSS by my mom's place had a ton too

How do you find out what shapes are available ... i.e. what manufacturers make them?

I'm wondering if there are any car or race car shapes available? I guess even a round album (imitating a wheel would work)! We just finished racing our modified power wheels and thought it would be fun to do a small portable album to have in the pits next season! Wish my Silhouette SD would cut chipboard.

Another option is to cut (or have someone cut for you) the shapes you want from a Cricut, Silloutte, etc. I know I have the deep cutting blade for my Circut and I keep saying I'm going to make some shapped albums....maybe I should actually do that.

I have a Silhouette SD but it doesn't cut anything that thick. However looking at Jacinda's links ... those are actual WOOD albums ... that opens up a WHOLE NEW ballgame for me ... my dh is going to build a CNC machine ... then he could cut albums for me in ANY shape!! ... maybe he could make that into a little sideline business ... custom cut albums ....

Thanks for the links ... I hadn't bought any shaped hybrid albums since SSD quit carrying them.
