H1N1 & Public Health VENT!!

Gah! I am so annoyed right now!

Avalynne is 21 months old and I accidentally missed getting her 18 month immunizations because I honestly didn't realize she was due for any. I thought she was done until 2, but apparently I was mistaken. I found that out when I took her in to have her belly button hernia looked at last month. I wish my public health nurse would give me a pamphlet of something telling me when I need to bring my kid in for shots. But that is a whole OTHER rant.

Anyways, I've phoned my health nurse 3 times asking for her to call me (she is never in the office - she does a lot of stuff all over), and she FINALLY got back to me today. And she informed me that she's not doing children's immunizations until the H1N1 immunizations are done. I asked if it would be another couple weeks? She said no, not until DECEMBER and I'll be #9 on her list!! She did give me another number to call in the closest city to us to check with them if I could get Avalynne in there.

They just called back, and they aren't doing vaccinations for kids either! They are also putting priority on H1N1 until December/January! :cursing: So by the time Avalynne can get her 18 month immunizations, she's going to be 2, which will push back her 24 month immunizations.

Ahhhhhhhhhhh! I am so frustrated! I know that the H1N1 is serious, and I'm not against immunizing for them, but can't they at least keep SOME staff on for the OTHER diseases that up till a month ago were important? Why do our babies have to be put at the bottom of the list?? The diseases that they immunize our kids for are just as bad (or WORSE) than H1N1!

I just hope they are vaccinating still for travelling out of the country and that Avalynne doesn't have to be fully caught up on her normal immunizations to be qualified to receive anything she may need for our trip to the Dominican in December!!!

I was going to say don't worry about it.. till I got to the last part. I'm pretty sure you have to be up to date on immunizations-- but that would be for adults, bebes are always "in progress" of getting them done so I dunno. I held off on a few of ce's vax's for more than a year so that part is no biggie.. it's just a schedule :]

Yeah, I wasn't too concerned about her being behind until we booked our tickets to the DR and I realized she might need something for that.

I might ask on a Canadian mommy board - a lot of the girls have gone abroad last winter. I think one of them said that babies have to be 2 before they can get anything anyways. Maybe I'm safe, but I'm still annoyed, lol!!

The 18 month shots are different than the 2 year shots...Natalie ended up having to get the whole set at once because of Mason's hospital stays. So nothing should be delayed. Yeah her 18 month ones will be, but she can get those at the same time as her 2 year shots and it'll all be done. :)

Can your regular ped do them?

Since we live in a super tiny town (2000 people), we only have 2 doctors and both are GP's... unfortuntely we don't have a pediatritian. And because there are only 2 doctors, they are busy all the time, and don't give shots. Everything is given through the public health unit :(.

I think it's similar in all of Canada. We do GPs, and if needed, we are referred to Peds. Public Health does all of our vaxs as well. I don't know what they're doing here in terms of regular vaxs, since I don't have anyone due for any, but I live in a little town of less than 2000, and I would expect they just wouldn't have the staff to do all that is needed with the mass immunizations.

Did you tell the nurse about the international travel? It seems that would put her in a higher risk and maybe bump the priority to get them done.

I agree about this H1N1 stuff. Kids still have the regular things going on. These offices are swamped beyond belief and it doesn't seem like they are increasing in staff. It's impossible to get in to see our ped right now unless you state fever about 102 and flu-like symtoms. :p
