Question about Teenagers

AMEN Lorie...trial and error, maybe I will get it right by the time the last one leaves :)

Isn't that just the way life goes, though? :p Like how you finally feel like you've adjusted to being on vacation and it's time to pack up and head home? LOL. We can only do our best for our kids, and pray that the gaps get filled somehow. :)

When I was in school, I paid 100% of my college tuition, books, food, and rent during the school year. I took out loans and had a few scholarships. During the summer, I worked a full time job and used the money I earned to pay my living expenses the next year. I was very careful with my money and somehow always ended up spreading my $5,000 through the whole year. If my parents would have charged me to live at home, there is no way I would have made it.

Good luck, Angie. :)

These days, that is nearly impossible unless you take out HUGE loans or are fortunate enough to live close to a good, inexpensive school. I think it's appalling how much it costs to go to a university these days. I do not think we will charge our children rent to live at home. It's a given that they will likely have to get loans and jobs. There's just no way we could afford to send our kids to a 40K school without them getting scholarships. But fortunately, we have an awesome public university nearby. And we're hoping that they work on college credits while in high school.

I think you did good to Lorie and my DD knows that once her GI Bill money runs out she is on her own for college cuase we just don't have the extra money for her to go to school. So she knows that after Spring 2013 she is on her own.

That is a HUGE gift that you gave your child by passing on the GI Bill! Seriously!

I graduated in December of 2010, so it is totally possible. I attended two good state colleges and only took about about $20,000 in loans which I will have paid off next month. :) I also graduated in three and a half years, because I was tired of charging up loans. lol. I had nine hours going into college and took summer classes one semester.

I agree though. University costs are totally ridiculous. And then you get out and have to settle for a job making $12 an hour. And yes, I am speaking from experience.

yeah I figured if I wasn't going back to school I mind as well pass that money on! I spent 20 years in teh Navy earning, somebody should get to use it! The college she wants to go to next fall (2013) is about $18K a seamester! But I am hoping that her dad and I and our family income and household size will make her eligble for some scholraships or financial aid. Luckily I think she may have enough of her Gi bill to either go one year there or at least one semster..either way she KNOWS well in advance it is up to her :) My parents couldn't afford to send me to college(and they were divorced), so I did it on my own and when I realized it wasn't for me I joined the Navy : ) at 20 and have absolutely no regrets...again thanks so much for all the advice girls I really do appreciate everybody opinions even if we all see it differently :hugs:

I wish my husband could have passed his GI Bill on to our daughter or our son, but he retired the year before it became an option. At first he thought no big deal since he would be using it for himself, but his employer is paying all expenses for him to get his Masters... so it's very possible his GI Bill will go down the drain. Bummer!

The cost of education these days is ridiculous and each semester the fees just keep being raised. I don't know how some of these kids make it happen. My daughter used up her scholarships, and she doesn't qualify for any assistance whatsoever, and so if it wasn't for us paying for it all, she'd have to get student loans for every bit of it. And, I hear (but I can't say for sure) that they are even picky about student loans and are not giving the kids enough money to cover it all. It's no wonder so many people don't go to college.
