Anybody found a great product or styling technique for bringing out the best in your curls? My hair is wavy, and right now I just add a little bit of paste and it looks wearable. I'd love to find something while were in the States that will really bring out the curl. Any tips?

hmmm IDK....I fight the waves in my hair. I usually blow dry it straight. Mostly because only part of my hair is wavy then part is curly and part is straight. So after washing/partially drying it it I put a little Pure Shine Frizz Remedy in it and blow-dry it. Oh and my hair is REALLY thick too!! if I let it dry naturally itll be this mixture of waves/curls which to me looks weird. Like a perm which didnt really take all the way LOL. Which is why I try to straighten it.

Best. Site. Ever. For curly girls anyway. I use DevaCurl products for my hair. I use the DevaCare No-Poo and One Condition with the ArcAngell and Set it Free.

Sulfate free/paraben free and "cone" free (for conditioners) work best, really. I got the best results with Deva, a local friend hates it. So it's definitely a YMMV thing.

I dry my hair with a cotton t-shirt rather than a towel. The looping on the towel helps to create frizz, so I avoid those on my hair.

Honestly, I'm still learning. I only found a stylist who handles curly hair well in the last year or so. I've always just straightened it because it was easier.

this is my hair too! Drives me nuts! It used to be stick straight when I was younger, wouldn't hold a curl for the life of me ... now I use a flat iron and straighten it. lol

i haven't mastered the pretty pretty waves 24/7 .. it seems like a fluke most days when my waves are not weird :p They're def getting.. better though. I do not do anything mean to my hair anymore ^_^ (ie no heat)... I use some anti frizz stuff & my mom gave me some hair goop stuff that seems to be helping but i can't remember the name (i'll ask her again when i see her- she just put some in a bottle for me).. Its more of a "styling gel" though.. but it helps tame it a bit....... but still not "perfect" .. Your prob already at that level of goodness hah. I'll be watching this thread for things i haven't tried yet though.

I have super curly hair and its also fine, but there's a ton of it.
I use mostly kerastase products with some Bumble too. I use a heavy duty leave in spray-in conditioner, some mousse, leave in thickening spray, and thermal humectant protectant too. I finger comb it and thats it. No brush, no towel(I use a cotton scarf if I wrap it at all), nada.

Ooooh thanks for the link Leila. I have board straight hair, but I'm a constantly learning how to handle my daughter's curls and hair-type. It's definitely been a process.

I have curly/wavy hair. it's curly if it's short, wavy if it's long. My hair is currently long, halfway down my back. Right now I'm in a straightening phase. My hair looks very frizzy and unhealthy if left to be wavy. So I've started straightening it. My hair drives me bonkers. I'm getting it cut and colored tomorrow so maybe I'll try being wavy again after that. Thanks for the link Leila!

For me I found that a styling mousse works best to get my curls out. I've been using Catwalk Extra Strong Mousse but it's taken me a while to find something that really works well for my hair. Years ago I had the best stuff...and then they of course discontinued it!

I use Redken Curl Refiner when I wear my hair curly. When the weather is humid I have to wear it curly or it is just a big ol' frizz ball.

I have really curly hair when I maintain it properly, but most of the time I cant find a product that I like, that makes my hair feel natural and not like a sticky mess! So I've taken to straightening it lately and my hair feels so much better!!

I'm another with super curly hair, but I often straighten it rather than trying to deal with the curls. Thanks Leila for the site! I'm gonna check it out!

I love naturallycurly.com, too! It can be a little overwhelming, though, so you may want to start with Live Curly, Live Free. It gives you the basics so you can make sense of what you're reading on NC.com.

I use sulfate and silicone-free styling products, too. Some are from the site, some not. I do use shampoo, but a gentle, sulfate-free one. For me, the process of styling my hair is more important than the products.

-I shampoo and condition my hair as soon as I get in the shower so the conditioner can sit on my hair and really moisturize it for a while. Washing the conditioner out is the last thing I do before turning off the water. (My conditioner is the one product I swear by, Giovanni Smooth as Silk Deeper Moisture Conditioner. It's in the organic beauty aisle at Target.)

-Leave your hair dripping wet while you apply styling products.

-I use more of the Smooth As Silk on my hair as a leave in conditioner then apply some curl creme.

-Scrunch dry with something smooth--a terry towel causes frizz. Cloth baby diapers like these are perfect (not to mention cheap and easy-to-get).

-Don't touch your hair once it's dry, since handling it causes frizz. (With 3 kids who touch my hair constantly, this is where it I fail abysmally. But my hair looks great on the rare day I'm not with them, LOL.)

as someone with wavy hair (not curly) i'll disagree with this part for the wavers.. Ce (LOL) has totally smoothed my hair out just with his hands before. My hair isn't the healthiest by far-- and most days my waves are .. pointy because i've done so much bleaching ^_^ so I'm not the best guide in general.. but... yes. Hands ok for wavey.. hands not so hot for curly (ce and my mom have curly hair).

I have curly hair that is fine. I use aveda "be curly curl enhancer":

I mix a small amount of that with their confixor liquid gel:

While my hair is wet I scrunch it into my hair. I grab a few chunks of hair near my face and twist them into a ringlet and back and away from my face. I occasionally scrunch them up while they dry. When they are completely dry I can separate them a little bit and I have really nice curls that stay out of my face. It holds all day and honestly its the best stuff I have ever used. I only have to buy new bottles about twice a year. So though it is expensive, it lasts a long time! So worth it!

Yes, that. I know it might sound odd, but putting the styling product in while your hair is dripping actually reduces the 'crunch' factor and helps the curl to maintain it's structure better.

I have issue with the no touching thing. My hands are always in my hair--mostly because I'm trying to keep it from getting stuck between my back and my chair (my hair is about 2-3" above my waist). But if you can--don't touch your hair.

This is the best thread ever {as far as threads without shirtless men go...}.

Thanks for all your tips girls!

me too. I have also many time closed the car door on my hair LOL

Oh this is a great thread! I'll have to try some of the things mentioned. I have curly hair and I have just about given up. I so wish I could leave it curly because I feel like I am totally damaging it with all the blow drying and straightening but I look like a wild woman when I let it do it's own thing. I live in high humidity too so most of the time I'm a total frizzball.

I use this too but I'm still undecided about whether I like it or not. Do you use any of the other products? I think I have the mousse and the spray gel as well so i tend to use them together. My hair has a decent bit of curl to it so I like to let it airdry and go curly in the summer when it's too hot to blowdry it. My biggest frustration though is that one day it'll look amazing and the next I'll use the same product and try to have the same wetness to my hair and everything and it'll be totally lame. It's so unpredictable.

My little sister has much curlier hair than I do and she uses the John Frieda Frizz-Ease line from Target. She uses the mousse and swears by the Finishing Creme for taking away the frizz.

Leave-in-conditioner is a must too. I haven't found one that really works, but one day without it will turn my hair into a bees hive. After practically trying on almost everything they sell in Target I started to believe they're all the same :(
It seems like Nexxus products works the best for me, and I love Pantene's smoothing serum better than John Frieda's.

My sister-in-law is a hair stylist and I like using Amplify shampoo and conditioner by Matrix when I want my hair curly and to give it volume. But I do switch it out occasionally with Redken's All Soft shampoo and conditioner to keep moisture and nutrients in it, etc.

I agree with using product in hair when it's wet. Definitely works better that way. And I use a diffuser on my blow dryer to dry it somewhat. I've learned though to not dry it all the way with the diffuser, just part way so it doesn't frizz. Leaving it wet to dry on it's own is better but if I'm showering and gotta get somewhere right after, I don't want my hair sopping wet.

And as for product, I use Redken's Workforce Spray and Amplify's aerosol spray as a finishing spray. Works great for me!

So what's up with all you girls telling me how to get my hair curly, and yet Rachel is the only one sporting a curly haired photo! I wanna see your curls!

well mine is actually curly/wavy in the photo but it is pulled back and gelled down so you cant tell LOL

That would require taking another photo. Once a year enough of that for me. :p

I just got the Brazillian Keratin treatment and I love it. First, I am biracial and the african american part of me makes for super curly and frizzy hair. Blow drying and flat ironing took an hour before the treatment. Now, I air dry and flat iron in 15 minutes with much better results. I am a busy mom of 3 and work fulltime so this was definitely the way for me to go. Speed is key.

Ok, I know I am the LAST person you'd expect to chime in here, but I have some info...

Both of my daughters and my wife have curly hair. My wife swears by Living Proof for curly or wavy hair. It was developed at MIT, and it's engineered to fight frizz and enhance curl. Other products often left her hair looking blah, but this curls it up nicely. My oldest DD has wavy hair, and if we use this stuff in her hair, we can get it pretty curly.

Just my thoughts.

I have super-thick, course hair and natural waves. I cannot for the life of me get them to do what I want.

I use Morroccon Oil just after blowdry and my hair loves it. :)

I am not just recommending this because I'm a representative, I am recommending it because it's a product I really do believe in, so please trust me on that... I don't want my recommendation to come off sales-y, because it's not meant that way...

This line is what my best friends, who both have curly/wavy hair swear by. They found it before I started selling it, and will be buying it long after I quit selling it, I'm sure. It is great...

thanks Kellie and all y'all! when it rains, I'm curly Q, and then as soon as the humidity is down, I zip back to my flat iron. :(

Curly - I've been using the Beyond the Zone Noodle Head line - it's inexpensive and at chain beauty supply stores, but not Target or Walgreens and the like. Forgot about Aveda - and that worked well for me when I was using it before!

Ok - now how do y'all blow dry your hair out - and stay smooth and curly? I can't manage This AT ALL! only air dry with product do I have a chance of smooth curl with no frizz, I cannot find a good diffuser anywhere.

I LOVED the biolage curl creme, but now I can't find it. I liked it because it tamed frizz but stayed soft... gotta check these links out too. :) I'm too lazy to straighten my hair

I use Catwalk's Curls Rock Amplifier OR Moraccan Oil. I like both about the same for function but I prefer Catwalk because it smells better. I also use a blow dryer and scrunch while drying. Then I use a light hair spray to scrunch it up more.

I have my curly hair pic above. ;)

I LOVE LOVE LOVE Catwalk's Curl Rock Amplifier. It lasts all day & keeps my curls tamed. But it is very very heavy. So I wouldn't recommend it for waves, necessarily.
I've also come to love spray gel instead of hairspray. Aussie has been my fave so far.
