Homeschooling Middle/High School

ok I'm at my wits end..my oldest is in 8th grade and in her 2nd year of school outside the home (I hesitate to say public school..b/c it's a small city school/uniforms/very nontraditional public school ie: they pray, etc) Anyways we are thinking about going back to home schooling and I was wondering if anybody here has homeschooled the higher grades..She was homeschooled until entering 7th grade and last year was an ok year..not spectacular but was ok. Anyways what program, etc do you use if you have been successful at higher grade education. I am looking for something that's pretty independent. She's a pretty good learner just lacking some motivation right now. Definitely a kid that likes to do things at her own pace and in her own time. She's not very good at time management. Of course I'll be around to monitor and help facilitate anything but really want this to be something she can do on her own.

any help would be great :) I'm open to a combo of things if that helps..

my state does not have Connections Academy which I've heard about and I've used K12.com before but not for anything higher than 5th grade. I'm pretty much leaning toward K12.com again unless something else that's better suited is mentioned/found.

Thanks!

Im not sure if the connections academy is like what we have here. Ours is called FLVS which is Florida Virtual Learning School. My daughter has a friend who does all of her classes this way. Maybe that could be something you could do? Unless the connections academuy is basically what Im talking about. Then I wouldnt have any suggestions. I like it because my kids were able to take classes at home on their own time and could work at their own pace. I got calls every week and emails periodically too.

Meg - K-12 is going to be my suggestion. If you're wanting her to be independent and not a ton on your end, K-12 is going to be your best bet.

My SIL has homeschooled all of her kids through high school, but they used a variety of curriculum for each of the subjects. They've used a variety of co-op, curriculum, etc. They used Veritas Press for History, MUS for math (but I know they've used other programs, I just can't remember - she's one of the big curriculum shoppers lol). I know they relied heavily on co-ops at that point. You might want to check into your region to find co-op schools. They're starting to pop up everywhere. We have a big one here that teaches just about everything plus a lot of fun electives.

Also, go to welltrainedmind.com Granted, it's our philosophy on homeschooling, but you'll be able to get a lot of advice from folks HS'ng the upper grades to help you make your decision.

Thanks Ladies!

Jess k-12 here is called Georgia Virtual Academy so it's probably about the same thing...

Darcy I"m going to check into co-ops..I have a friend at church that homeschools and her kids use a co-op..that didn't even cross my mind! I know one of her girls are taking Chinese this year using their program

oh ok...yea two of my kids have done courses on FLVS. I think it is great that they offer that. It is nice to make up a credit or get a little ahead too in high school

We've been using Connections Academy for my DD for 4th grade through the MO Virtual Instruction Program. So it's hard to say what it's like for higher grades. Our state cut our free tuition in January so I'm transfering over to a different curriculum. I really like it so I'm very disappointed that we can't continue on.

You can pay to enroll privately in Connections and it's about the same as K12. From what I hear about K12 I think that's what I would choose if I could pay out of pocket.

Hi Meghan!

I am homeschooling an 8th grader and a 10th grader...we use Switched on Schoolhouse. The boys really like it...it's computer driven...and it grades all but subjective questions. They were public schooled through 6th grade on one kiddo and 7th grade on the other one. Wish I had started when they were in Kindergarten!!

Mardel Bookstores carry Switched on Schoolhouse (SOS)... and you can order it online... I found it up to 12% off (haven't seen it for more than 12% off) at another site & free shipping...and when I called the SOS site...they matched it.

If you order from SOS site...please give my name...I think the boys might get a free thank you gift for referring.

I originally picked up a "demo disk" from Mardel and the boys checked it out before we ordered it. Let me know if you have any questions!

K12.com is free here for public

stinks they cut the free tuition there for CA..is k12 offered there free?

TY Sharon I'll check them out as well...

no it isn't.

I think for math for my DD I'm going to use Teaching Textbooks. You may want to check it out.

The family that hosts our Robotics Team uses Teaching Textbooks...I took my 15yo son to their booth at a curriculum fair and he checked it out...but decided he liked SOS math better. Wonder if they have a demo disk and you could let your child look at both of them...
