Zip files - to keep or not to keep?

man - I am going to go home tonight and delete all those zips - I didn't realize they were unstable. I always unzip everything after I download so now I know I don't need to keep them at all!!! WOO HOO

I really need to back up my stuff....hehe...I too delete!

True that Holly. Me too. And yet...I go home and do other things EVERYTIME I say I'm gonna backup my schtuff. What the heck?! LOL! I'm gonna be in BIG trouble if my EHD goes anytime soon, lol.

I went and bought a 1TB EHD on Friday, and it's now...Wed...and I haven't put anything on it. But it's been plugged in the entire time.

Mac unzips my files automatically and tosses the zip in the trash as soon as that's done. Zip files are quite prone to corrupting and really aren't worth keeping. Make a regular habit of backing your actual files up somewhere. Whether it's an extra EHD (they're so cheap now) or burned on to DVDs. As soon as my purchases are downloaded, I immediately save them to two separate EHDs.

And those of you who are saying "I really need to back up"... for goodness sake, do it! Ever notice all the people who start threads about their computer or EHD or whatever that crashed ALWAYS say, "I kept saying I really need to back my stuff up" or "I kept meaning to back my stuff up but hadn't got around to it yet." Everything that's important to you should be in at least two places. Storage is cheap! You can't put a pricetag on lost memories that can never be retrieved! Even if it's just your stash... sure you can replace most of it, but do you really want to have to do that? Back up back up BACK UP! [/end lecture mode] ;) :p

LOL, Joan. OK, OK...I'm going to set my computer up to transfer my photos at least from one EHD to the second...hopefully it doesn't mess with my little bit of RAM I have left, since I'm attempting to design, too...lol!

You could always get it going on it tonight while you're sleeping too. And, there, I listened to my own nagging and just copied my last little batch of photos to my EHD, lol. ;) I do admit it was a total PITA at first getting everything backed up, but once catching up with the huge backlog was done, keeping up with it is easy and quick.

I PROMISE to back up stuff tonight.

I do have all of my stuff from last year backed up. Just not hte past 6 months:blink:

I honestly had no idea the zips were prone to becoming unstable and corrupt over time. I guess I can see what I'm going to be doing intermittently these next couple of days :p

Hehe ok so i got ACDsee...and I have everything transfered on there....but I really want to get and EHD i just have THAT kind of money right now....bleh

Yeaaaa, no. It's not a storage program, it's just a viewing and organizational program.

You DEFINITELY need to burn some CD's or DVD's then! Lol!

haha ok i am such a blonde!!! Yeah i guess i will have to make use of this DVD burner I have!!!

**holds head in shame**

I have my stuff backed up on the EHD but I have yet to delete it off my computer and it is taking up space....I just can't hit the delete button well I can for certain things but otheres I am like but it I keep it there I don't have to get out the EHD....ugh I just need to delete...lol

COL!!! You MUST back up! Seriously, take the week off my CT and backup. You know that I'm still in tears over my loss.

For those that don't know, my EHD died late last week. The 'discs' are unalined and can't be read. I'm having to spend a bunch of money to send it to a "clean room" facility to have it repaired. And uh, they charge by the hour to fix it... estimate (if they can do it at all) is now $1000-1400. So, now that I've scared you all to death, GO BACK UP!!!

I know Julie :( Have they started on yours yet??

Honestly, I have the majority of my stash in about 3 places (laptop HD, EHD, and server at work)a. And I have severl DVD's of stuff that I backed up in the beginning of the year. So I really wouldn't be hit that badly.

But I'm still going to go home and back up a bunch of stuff like a good girl :)
And I don't need to take time off from your CT you silly goose :) I'm in middle of a LO using every which way as we speak! :)

I guess the facility has it now, but my only communication since Friday has been a vague message from the Geek Squad about it. They just wanted to say it isn't guarenteed that they will get anything off the EHD and the general cost if they can. :( I just hope they can do it. I'm just sick about this because I KNEW better and still didn't find the time to back everything up.

Ok yeah I am backing up tonight!!! What is the best method? CD or DVD? and what's the difference?? Can you put more on a DVD??

I used to delete them but with all the hard drive crashes around me I decided to burn them to DVD so I make a file 'to burn' and once it gets to dvd capacity I burn them.

Oh, Julie, that sucks. :( I hope they get some stuff off of it for you. I'm always scared my EHD will die since I have ALL my pictures and digital kits on there. I do backup to DVD's fairly regularly though. It would still be awful to lose it.

As for Zip files, I have a Mac too and they are automatically thrown in the trash bin when they are downloaded and unzipped.

Yea a DVD holds WAY more. They say 4.7 GB, but last time I burned I could only get about 4GB on one. But still, pretty awesome.

I'm burning as we speak Julie! No need to crack the whip! :)

A few more pages of this and you have almost convinced me to delete my zip files *giggle* ;)
