DS has been running fever for 24 hrs...no other symptoms and it's come down on motrin...it went back up about 6 pm to 102 and so I gave him tylenol and I thought all was well til I got the last bit down him and he proceeded to throw up all over me. I know it was the medicine that made him gag/throw up b/c he's perfectly fine and hasn't complained of his tummy at all and 3 minutes after throwing up was asking me for a snack. My question though is should I give him more tylenol or wait an hour or so and give him motrin? He hasn't had anything since about 1:30 pm and it's now 7:15.

how's his temp been in the last hour? I'd wait..
and might not even give him the motrin dependent on how he's acting etc. If he's fine, eating, happy, awake, active etc etc.. I wouldn't medicate-- lol but that's me ^_^

He's fine..has been all day...the thing is he's never been sick...like ever...so I'm a total newbie at dealing with fevers and stuff. I don't like to give him too much, but I also know that if I let him go to bed with it at 102 I'm just going to be up worrying all night that it will go higher kwim?

What's the deal with alternating Motrin and Tylenol? I see people saying that all the time, but I don't know why.

how much longer till he goes to bed? is it still @ 102 right now? (lol I asked that in the first response but i dont think you saw it ^_^ ).. Did he get a bath tonight? maybe try that first... I mean it's not going to hurt him to give him the motrin, but i def wouldn't give him more tyelnol jic he got some in him..

and I dunno kellie.. supposedly you can piggie back them.. I just use motrin straight off the bat cause it works better imo and = less total meds if i don't have to give tyelnol first haha.

Yeah my daughter was always a high fever runner, so I have LOTS of experience there. LOL Seriously, when she was younger, it was nothing for her to pop 103 or 104 and have it last for several days.

Like La, I don't tend to medicate a fever if there are no other symptoms unless it is outrageously high for several days in a row. A nurse once told me that the body really needs to fight off anything of 102 or less, so it's actually better not to medicate.

Given your options though, I'd wait for the motrin. :) Hope he feels better!

I always alternate Tylenol and Motrin. I don't really know exactly why it is just something that my dr recommended and my BFF that is a nurse. It is something about the different drugs in them.
The only thing is don't give Motrin on an empty stomach. I would give him a little bit more time. about 2-3 hours after the tylenol that he threw up, I would give him motrin. After that you can keep alternating them if needed every 2-3 hours. If he still has a fever by tomorrow night, I would call the dr and get him in. That is just my 2 cents though. :)

If it's just a fever if the child is not uncomfortable I would not give medicine for it. Also depends on how you are taking the temperature. Sometimes it can cause it to run low/high. You could probably call his pediatrician though and see what he/she says.

I usually only medicate fevers at night so we can all rest. But to piggy back Tylenol with Motrin you only need to wait a couple hours.

Well, I have lots of experience with fevers. LOL Our pediatrician does not give Tylenol until it's 103. If my kids are uncomfortable, I go ahead and give them some, but only if they are visibly uncomfortable. Camden always seems fine with fevers. Rory, however, acts like she's dying once it's above 99.6 or so.
