Thanks, everyone!! Mason has been off chemo for 6 weeks now, and my husband and I were noticing how much different he's been since getting off those awful drugs...he's eating more, and he's more active and energetic...though he still needs naps (he's 5, and I know most 5 year olds don't nap). But he's getting to be more like the Mason we knew and loved before this all happened...he's just SO...happy!
There were so many side effects from the drugs that we have to deal with - like seeing an occupational therapist because the feeling in his hands/feet diminished, so his gross and motor skills are really lacking compared to kids his age. When we were only a few months into treatment, the arches in his feet fell and he walks funny...he had braces but wouldn't wear them (and you know it's hard to get a 2.5 year old to do ANYTHING they don't want to do, right, lol) We're also waiting to get in with an ear/nose/throat specialist because he had about 9 ear infections in the time span of 6-7 months, though we're not 100% sure that was caused by chemo.
He'll continue being tested (mostly through bloodwork) regularly for the rest of his life, to be sure that there's nothing coming back...and they watch them long-term for more side effects. We also had enrolled him in a study for childhood osteoperosis, so he goes in for bone density scans and xays every 6-12 months for a few more years (it's a side effect of the steroids he was on).
But, we are SO relieved that the worst part is over. We'll never be the same again after this experience, kwim...but, no more torture for the little guy! He loved his nurses but hated what his nurses had to do to him each week...hold him down and poke him with needles.
He's scheduled to have his port (we call it an IVAD) removed at the end of January...and hopefully it will be his VERY last time going in for surgery!
Anyhow...we are THRILLED that we got good news at the end of this long road...and now we just hope that we never see this ugly thing again, or that he doesn't get too many of the bad side effects of the drugs!
