Wisdom Teeth Update

1st... thanks to everyone for all the P&PT!!! The dentist did end up prescribing a valium for me to take before the proceedure, so I was a bit more relaxed than I would have been. Didn't seem to help much once they got started though. OMG!!!! It was so horrible. The top teeth were so easy... took like 30 seconds each. But, the bottom 2 were aweful. Those two took about 20 minutes each... tons of drilling and wrenching trying to break them into pieces. The roots were so wraped up in there that he had to keep stopping to numb me more. He said I will almost surely be very bruised and swollen. He prescribed percocet and 800 mg ibuprophen every 4 hours. So far it's working ok. Now we just have to keep praying I don't develope dry socket.

I'll update on my SIL as soon as I hear anything.
 
I had to have LOTS of numbing also when mine were taken out and I did have very bad bruising the next day...funny story though...I was teaching at the time and it was about 2 weeks before my wedding...well DH sent me flowers to work the next day which was also the day my coworkers gave me a bridal shower...so there I am with a bouquet of flowers and two brusied up cheeks lol...when I got up to thank everyone at the shower I promised them that DH (fiance at the time) did NOT beat me up and send flowers to make up for it lol!! It was pretty funny...

anyway...hope you feel better...did he give you an ice pack? that seemed to help I remember with some of the pain
 
I'm glad it's over... and yes, prevent dry socket at all costs! I've never had my wisdom teeth pulled, but I've had some molars that were just horrendous. One, was broken off to the gum line and it was like you described, drilling and pulling, breaking... *shudder*

Get some rest and keep on top of your meds!!!
 
What?! You were awake for this??!! I suppose mine was supposed to be a twilight kinda anaesthesia, but I only remember counting backwards and then nothing til I woke up. I can't imagine being lucid for the whole event! You poor thing!
 
Yeah... I was so not awake for mine and SO glad I wasn't!

As long as you don't suck anything, you should be fine! Good luck! Recovery was the worst part for me.
 
They put me completely under for mine too.. all 4 of mine were impacted. Shudder. How awful Laura.. glad you're home!!!

I was awake for mine...I didn't have dental insurance at the time and had a VERY bad cavity in one of my lower wisdom teeth. I couldn't afford the anesthesia so he just gave me gas and novocaine. I still remember every bit of it though and it was torture..but I wanted that tooth OUT.
 
UGH, it sounds horrific, but at least they are out of there now! Hopefully your recovery is as quick as possible!
 
Ugh, that's just awful!!

I had 2 wisdom teeth removed (I also was awake) and the top one came out easily, but the bottom one they had to do the same as you - drilling and yanking. They made me sign a waiver before they started that my jaw *may* get broken, or the teeth next to the one being removed could get broken but they wouldn't be responsible. The tooth next to the bottom one DID end up breaking but it doesn't bother me too much, so I haven't gone in to get it fixed, lol.

I never developed dry socket though, I just made sure not to suck on anything at all.
 
Well, it's day 3 and it seems to be doing ok. My jaw is very stiff and sore so I can't open my mouth too much, so eating is a real struggle. I want meat so bad. LOL I look like a chimpunk and there is some bruising on the outside, but I saw the dentist today for a fallow up and he was very surprised at how "good" I actually looked concidering how difficult the 2 bottom ones were. SO, dry socket typically decelopes between day 4-7... keeping my fingers crossed.
 
OMG you poor thing....glad your recovery is going "well". I read stories like this a lot and when I I do I think the good lord everytime that I never ever grew wisdom teeth!!!! :blink:
 
My wisdom teeth were the same way Laura, but I was put under for the procedure - though I did wake up near the end for the drilling/cracking/wrenching part!
