Why am I gaining so much weight?

I don't get it...for the past month I've cut out all sugar from my diet and I'm truly not eating excessively. I'm actually at that point that I'm so full of baby that overeating is uncomfortable kwim? so why am I still gaining so much?

With DS I had 25 lbs of water weight that I lost the first week after he was born... but this time I'm not swelling at all. I'm just so afraid to step on the scales at my appt next week b/c my doc has no qualms with fussing at me for gaining too much. I just weighed and I want to cry. :(

((Hugs)) Have you been gaining too much all along, or is it just this month? With all 3 of my pregnancies, I've had 1 month (usually around month 5, but that may vary for other people) where I gained a lot no matter what I did or didn't do. After that month things went back to usual. I hope the same happens for you!

:( I wouldn't worry too much because you don't look like you're a big girl normally...your body will gain what it needs if you're not overeating...you know, you have to have fat to cushion your organs and stuff and if you're not fatty to begin with you'll need to gain more while pregnant..your body's defense in protecting itself.

I know it stinks to watch the scale creep up though! Maybe you don't need to cut out ALL sugar though...who knows, your body could be in stubborn mode because of it? IDK, just guessing here...

Well...the first 4 mos I didn't gain anything b/c I was so sick...since then it's ranged from 3-6 lbs a month. Last appt was my highest at 6 lbs.

I'm hoping that maybe my scales here are just off and it's not as much as I think it is...if it is right on with the scales at the doc's office then I've gained 8 lbs this month and I just don't see it. My belly has exploded this month though. I don't know..I've just tried to be so good this pregnancy and it's not working out. I'm so dreading losing all this weight.

With my first, I ate very healthy, gave up Pepsi, did everything you were supposed to do, and gained 60. With Amelia I worked at McDonald's, and overindulged, and gained 62. With Rae, I lost 15 because I was so sick, but ended up 45 pounds over, which equalled 60.

I really think that your body will gain whatever it needs to, unless you REALLY overdo, which I don't think you are. I'm sorry though, that the doctor is giving you hard time, mine never did. ((hugs)) and try not to worry.

What I'm really worried about is having a big baby lol...

we have really big genes in our family...no man on either side is less than 6 ft..most not less than 6'2. At 5'7 I'm the shortest woman in my family. At my 20 week u/s this baby was already nearly 2 lbs. When DS was born at 35 weeks he was 6 lb 7 oz...at 35 weeks!!!

My worst nightmare right now is having a fast labor like I did with DS (3 hrs from water breaking to birth), no time for an epidural again and giving birth to a 10 lb baby!!!

I had one month where I gained like 15 pounds, I hadn't gained anything before that though so even though I was freaked out, my doctor was very happy and even told me so. Its porbably just your big gain month. I am sure you still look fantastic!

Benjamin was 9 pound 14 oz, Amelia was 8 pounds 2 oz (the one I gained most, but she came early), and Rae was 9 pounds 12 oz. I had my last two without meds, so it is possible, even if they are big! :)

I'm sorry I missed the outcome... but what ever happened with the gestational diabetes tests? When I was PG with Riley I gained a total of 26 lbs but the last 2 weeks I gained 11 of that and my blood pressure and diabetes awas going haywire. How close are you to your due date? It could be that your body is starting to say "hey, I'm done with all this"... I had Riley at 37 weeks because of it.

I haven't had my 3 hr...it's next week. I'm only 30 weeks so I don't want to have this baby yet...I had hypertension and swelling with DS but this time my BP is fine and I haven't had any swelling at all. I really feel pretty healthy..as compared to my first pregnancy and I look much healther with this one...I mean aside from my big butt I'm mostly just a big ole belly right now lol

Maybe because you are having a girl? :) I gained fifty (yes, 50!) with each of mine. My first was because I was stupid and didn't exercise and ate what I wanted. I learned my lesson the second time around. I watched what I ate very carefully, and I worked out every single day until the day I gave birth (cardio and step aerobics!) and I still gained 50 with the second! Both were girls. :P

ETA: I lost all the weight both times, and even dropped down to below prepreg weight with my second. I think it's because I worked out so much during the nine months. So don't worry, you'll lose it!

I am so there with you! I gained 60 with my first because I wasn't careful and I ate whatever I wanted (lots of donuts and chinese food and for a few months I craved hot dogs). So this time I was resolved to be so good. I've kept a food diary, I walk 3 days a week, and I'm still ending up in the same boat. The first 15 weeks I was doing really well and then BAM - the 2nd trimester hit and I'm gaining fast again. It's really frustrating. It's the same two months I had trouble last time - in the 5th and 6th months I gained 15lbs and 10lbs - and I almost died each time I stepped on the scale.

This time I gained 8lbs both months and though it's not as bad as last time, I'm at 24lbs gained and my doctor and I both wanted me to stay right around 30lbs. With 13 weeks to go, I'm really doubtful that I'm going to stay at 30lb and it's really depressing.

I haven't given up. I'm still keep my food journal and getting my walks in - plus chasing a 2 year old and the 7 month old I watch - so I'm staying active. But I guess my body just wants to gain weight. I really did slow down on weight gain during the 3rd trimester last time and even had a 2 week span where I lost 3lbs, so I hope that happens this time.

You're not alone and it's not your fault!

I definitely agree with the girls who've said your body will gain what it needs. Just keep making the best food choices you can make, Nikki.

I wanted to say that I totally empathize with you on the big baby thing! My guys are both preemies. JP was born weighing 7lbs 1oz at 33 weeks, Devin was 8lbs 11oz at 34 or 36 weeks (depends on whether you ask the Peri [34] or the OB[36]...based on my own knowledge of when I conceived...the Peri was closer to right, I was 34w5d pregnant when D was born.) Anyway, I didn't have GD with either pregnancy, I just grow them big.

first of all ((HUGS!)). pregnancy is stressful enough without the added high sugars and weirdo weight gain. don't use your scale at home. k, its waaaaay different then the one at the MD's office. secondly, your trying to eat right and your chasing a 3 year old. thats all you can do. wait til you get to your next appointment and go from there. your doing good and we all love you. you don't need this extra stress. k. ((HUGS!))

My best advice.. don't even look at the scale. When I was pregnant this time i was SO stressed out over weight and it wasn't doing me any good. I have no idea what I gained this pregnancy at the end. I talked to my dr and had her not tell me and I stepped backwards on the scale so I didn't see the numbers. I have an idea of what I gained but not an exact number. It was soooo much easier to get through the pregnancy without worrying about silly numbers!

*hugs* You are doing soo good! All thats important is that precious little baby :)

Awww Nikki, big hugs!!! First of all, you look beautiful!! You look completely healthy and the fact that your blood pressure is good this time is awesome!! I think you're perfectly healthy. It's hard to understand why there's so much weight gain in some pregnancies and not in others. The fact that you've been eating good and avoiding all the sugars is a big plus too. Weight is just a number - I think you're healthy and I firmly believe that your precious baby girl is too!! Just enjoy these last weeks of the pregnancy and try not to stress too much!! Biggest hugs!!

I know you said you've been cutting out sugars, but have you been cutting out carbs, too? that's where I get most of my sugar from and it always adds to my preggo weight gain.

Also... lots of salt would be doing it, too. It might not look like water weight, but that could very well be it.

Did you have a lot of amniotic fluid when you had your first?? I had a LOT, more than the average girl, and that contributed a lot to my weight gain.

My son was 11 pounds 2 ounces, 23 & 1/2 inches long at birth! And he was 10 days EARLY! I gained 60-65 with him and my doc only wanted me to gain 23. Went a little over didn't I? I had absolutely no energy what-so-ever so I basically just went to work then would go home and lay down. I was bigger than a house and it was hard to do ANYTHING.
It seems to me from what I've read that you are doing everything right. I know it's hard but I wouldn't be too worried about the numbers on the scale. I would concentrate on the numbers on the BP cuff. Since your BP isn't high this time and it sounds like you are eating healthier, I would try not to stress over it.

I know it's easier said than done...

{{{HUGS}}}

I just wouldn't worry about it Nikki, truly. I weighed 130 when I got pg w/ Abby and I was over 200 when I delivered her.. and I did not eat crap. I ate healthy with her, no pop, no nothing and still gained over 70 lbs. I lost it all really quick too. Your body knows what it needs... although if you're really worried about it, maybe cut back on some carbs? Lots of sugar in those too.

I'm sorry! during my pregnancy with Hannah, I stopped looking at the scale at the doctor's office until the very end so I could know the total.

This time... I've already gained 15 lbs. yes, 15lbs, and I'm 16 weeks. In fact, i weighed last week, not this week. So it's probably at least 16. At least you kept it off for a bit! But yeah, I wouldn't worry too much. Easier said than done.

big hugs!!! you look GREAT and from what Iknow you gain the most weight the last month or two becuase that is when the baby gains the majority of it's weight...I gained about the same with all of mine and they ALL went up in weight from the 1st one being 6 lbs 4 oz to the last one being 8 lbs 9 oz and he was 7 days early, so I feel your pain on worrying if she is gonna be big or not...but I agree with Kristin, long as you feel good, don't get too wrapped up in the numbers, 'cause I think you look WONDERFUL!

I was just about to ask how is your blood pressure but I see that's been covered. :) When I was pregnant with Kassi I only gained about 8 pnds the first 4 months, then a little more at 5. She was born at 36 weeks (major case of preeclampsia, she still weighed 7pnds) and by that time I had gained right around 70 pnds.

Make your Dr. keep an eye on your blood pressure and blood sugar but I really wouldn't worry about your weight. You'll lose it after your baby gets here. :)

I monitor my BP at home...I had to take Aldonet 3x daily with DS so I've been watching it closely..this time it's running normal...this morning it was 116/72..my heart rate is a little fast...resting between 90-100 but with DS resting it was 130-140 so I'm not too worried about it and neither is my doc.

It's just frustrating to be trying to be much better this time around and still gain as much as I did the first time lol

I am sorry you are feeling this way, but just because you are not seeing any swelling, that doesn't necessarily mean that you aren't retaining water. My best advice is to not let it stress you out, or your hormones may really go into overdrive and you may gain more weight. It's such a vicious cycle. Hang in there!! (((Hugs)))
