Whole30

I need to change my diet...I bought the book last night and want to give this a try. I even put only a dash of creamer in my coffee this morning where I normally use quite a bit. I started a Pinterest board with tips and recipes. It seems kind of overwhelming to me especially when I have to feed myself and 3 kiddos.
Any tips would be appreciated.

I honestly feel that slow and steady is the way to go. No one sticks to crash diets and strict eating plans. Like, EVER. It's fun and it scratches the itch we have to see instant change, but small steps over a long period of time seems to have the more lasting effect. Anyway, one of the conclusions I came to after my summer of health obsession last year :)

I have never done whole 30 all the way, but I have cut out A LOT of things to take the first step forward. I kinda believe moderation is the key and knowing myself there are some things I just don't want to deprive myself of because I love food. We have changed our all around diet around here though and even the kids have done well. My kids are pretty good at eating whatever I make which helps. I was not going to make 2 meals all the time!

You can totally do it! Just don't beat yourself up if you have a couple cheats. I think that that makes it worse and you shouldn't feel guilty!

I've got Whole 30 on my ereader but haven't read it yet. I will be reading it sometime over the next month, along with Chris Powell's new book. I'm fed up with counting calories and portions. I am working on eating clean, eating more healthy fat, less empty carbs, very little sugar, lean protein or smaller portions of higher fat protein, and lots of veggies with a bit of dairy. So far I find I am able to eat smaller meals, am not starving as often as I used to feel (I think b/c my blood sugar would plummet) and am enjoying more carbs but try to make them whole grain. I'm interested to see what these two books will say, as I've heard good things about both.

Crystal & Val....I'm following both your food boards now.
I need to clean my boards up, I've got food stashed in lots of boards, some low carb, some WW, some healthy, some not so healthy....but if you want to check my boards, you can find them here....

Are you friends with Gina Miller on Facebook? She is hardcore health/fitness, and she recently mentioned that she eats approximately 70% Whole30 and 30% paleo because she found following Whole30 all of the time too restrictive for her. She has 3 kids, too, and is a pro photog & digital designer.

I would message her (or friend her & then message her!) and pick her brain abt it.

My parents are pretty much 100% Whole30 since being diagnosed with lymes disease... but they are even more restricted because they have food allergies. It has been amazing for them... my dad has lost like 60 pounds since November - my mom is down a few pant sizes. No exercising, they aren't hungry... my mom had horrible back issues and she is really contributing that going away because of the diet since she didn't do anything else different.

I'm about 60% Whole. I need to get back into being more serious about it... getting rid of dairy is the worst for me and getting rid of the starchy veggies are the worst for my hubby. :) When we were more hard core, we felt great. We didn't loose of weight with it, since we weren't totally on it... but had more energy. :)

I cut out dairy again recently and I feel so much better without any making any other major changes.

I've done Whole30 and I felt like it was WAY too restrictive for me - like to the point it was almost unrealistic especially if you try and avoid all the additives, hidden sugar, etc. You pretty much have to be a hard core label reader to follow it the way they recommend.

Granted it's only 30 days and I do think a challenge where you go all in is a great way to get started in the whole clean eating realm, but I've had much better luck overall sticking with an 80/20 Paleo diet over time. Although lately I've been looking more into clean eating because I find that no grains/legumes it's pretty difficult with a picky toddler.

Thank you all for chiming in. I think I am going to start small and be conscience of what I am eating, making better food choices and preparing more.

I found that in social gatherings I would have to separate myself, like I wasn't part of the group or something. I mean, you go to a birthday party and you're the only one not eating cake, kwim? And then I worried, "Do they think that I think I'm better than them?" At Bunco night everyone would be having pasta and garlic bread and I'd be sitting there with the grapes & almonds I brought. It was just awkward.

I skimmed and read through some of the Whole 30 stuff. I think it's great for anyone who can do it and I bet you feel amazing when doing it....but I can't. It's too constrictive for me. I do better on the cleaning eating paleo-ish 80/20 type of plan. It's working for me b/c I'm down 5 lbs in the last month.

Val - I'm like you. I don't want to feel ostracized or deprived for not joining in on party foods and celebrations. So, my 80/20 type of plan works for that. I have the occasional piece of cake or indulge in some high carb meal here and there but it's a treat not a habit. At home I still try to eat lots of veggies, a little dairy, lean protein and low(ish) carbs (mostly whole grains). But I have the occasional pizza and have popcorn with butter once a week. I've tried so many different plans and I can't sustain them so this time I'm not counting calories, eat when hungry but try to eat smaller meals and snacks and don't eat much after dinner usually (except for popcorn night). So far this is working for me.

We all have to find what works for us, our bodies, metabolism, etc are all different so different plans work for different people. For me, balance was the key. I don't feel deprived anymore. Chris Powell talked about balance, eating a higher carb meal one day and very low carb the next and trying to eat the carbs earlier in the day, in one meal. I am going to read his book soon and will let you all know what I think of it.

I think everyone is different. I actually do WAY better if I go cold turkey than if I try moderation. My feeling is generally that "If I can have a little, might as well have it all." I did a 30 day restrictive diet a few years ago based on some tests a natruopath did, and after I got over the shock of it, I couldn't believe how much energy I had. And the thing I like about Whole30 is that they aren't saying you have to live like this forever, just that you have to go 30 days to get it all out of your system to see what your own triggers are. Then you just have to avoid your triggers. And sugar, because, yeah, so much sugar is hard on our bodies. I like having a program and having someone tell me where the parameters are, so I think you might find it works for you, even if it doesn't work for everyone.
