Which sippy is best and when to take it away?

I am sippy-obsessed. Naomi definitely needs one although she does drink out of a 3 oz dixie cup at supper. I'm a sippy snob and I only like cute ones :p I hate leaky ones and ones with hard to clean spouts. I would LOVE to hear your recommendations!

Also, I don't know when to take it away? Nathan's 8 so I don't remember when I took his away! (I've had two kids and slept since then!)
 
I am the same way Lena...Kaden only drinks from a regular cup at supper and at daycare...otherwise it's sippy...and it has to be the cute kind too...hheeh...

I was wondering the same thing tho.
 
I guess I might not be a sippy "snob" but we do have about 15 too many.. LOL!
I buy a new one evertime we go to the store...
Most of Elle's are the playtex ones with the same silicone inner valve thing... SHE prefers they have anilmals or Princesses, or Dora, ETC..
They also sell cute ones, that look like travel coffee mugs, but use that same silicone spout.. :thumbup:

I am curious though, as to what are considered the "GOOD" sippys.. LOL

And I think they can be taken away between 2-3 ish... Maybe 3- 3.5 ish...
 
My daughter (now three) never liked a sippy cup, and we moved her onto a cup for meals, and she has just always used a cup. (cute plastic ones from Ikea). My son, now 10 months doesn't like a sippy cup at ALL, so that's fine. No juice for him until he learns to use a cup. :) We have tried a few different ones, started with the nubby soft-spout, because it felt more like a bottle nipple, but neither liked those. That one leaked. Bad. But it is simple to clean, as there is no valve. The avent sippies are a PAIN to clean, they have such a complicated valve, and we had ours for less than a week before it developed mildew (EWW!) black stuff inside the valve. And yes, I took it apart to clean by hand and let dry (I thought...) well before putting it back together. We found the Playtex ones are the only ones that did not leak, and did not break.
 
The only ones that didn't leak for us were Nuby. But they aren't easy to clean.
Em... take them away... uh... when she wants it?
 
Yeah, these are the exact ones Naomi uses, but I have to use a q-tip to clean the little triangular indent on each side of the inside lid about once or twice a week. what a pain! these have never leaked for me, but the insulated version of them have leaked! I do not prefer the Nuby only because I want her on a hard-spouted sippy.
 
Oh and I only like to have about 3 sippy's. I find the more I have, the more I lose. Naomi only owned 2 bottles, ever. And they were identical, I just had a spare and replaced the nipples when they needed them :p
 
We have quite a few different sippy's here in our house, I need to trash some more since we don't use most of them. Now that Kyle's off the bottle the only kind he will use are the Nuby ones with the soft spout that are like $2 each at Walmart. They are kind of a pain to clean now though, they changed the spout from when we used them when the girls were little so now dried milk tends to get stuck in the little ridges in the spout.

Kelsie is 4.5 but she is prone to spills unless she has a lid so she uses one of the Playtex sippy's with the bendable straw and the cute lil changeable inserts. It is really easy to clean, all the pieces including the straw come apart. She occasionally uses Kyle's Playtex sippy (since he won't use it) but we take the rubber piece out.

I'm not sure what's considered good either, but I loved the Nuby ones, until my girls started chewing on them. They never leaked for me until they'd chew a little hole in the soft top. My girls just turned 3, and they've been drinking from regular cups for about 4 months. They do really well with them.

I would urge you to purchase sippy cups that are now BPA free. There is chemical in plastic that is considered potentially dangerous and there are a couple of cup/bottle makers that are now making BPA-free products. You can read more about it in this Wall Street Journal article.

We literally just went out and purchased all new bottles and sippy cups. Target carries the Munchkin brand that is BPA free and that is what we bought. Also, if you are using bottles, Dr. Brown's now makes a BPA Free bottle (which we purchased for Madeleine).

We use the Munchkin straw insulated sippy cups. I love them. No leaks, and because they are insulated, I can give Ava milk and have it keep longer.

My DD2 is now using glass bottles this time around (Evenflo) because of the whole BPA thing. They no longer sell the BPA plastic baby products in Canada. They were not "officially" recalled, but they pulled them all off the shelves in April.
 
We decided to not use spill-proof cups because I really got annoyed at seeing kids who used them just toss them to the ground whenever they were done...a habit that eventually has to be unlearned with regular cups. So we just used the 2-1 type child cups...optional sippy lids.
 
I love sippy cups and I'm slightly obsessed. I like the Munchkin insulated, Playtex Sipsters, and Gerber Graduates Fun Grips. I've never had the Sipsters or Graduates leak, but sometimes when the tempterature or altitude changes, the Munchkin straw cups will start sputtering out. DS can drink out of a regular cup successfully, but I am a mess-a-phob and so I have a hard time letting him use anything other than a sippy cup. LOL
 
We use the Playtex ones, that were not on the recall list. We have the Playtex Insulators, they have been a favorite of all of my kids.

Rae is almost 4, and is just now taking to straw cups, I plan to get her a couple of straw cups, and just take away the sippy all together. She has been very resitant to try anything new until lately.
 
When we first started Wesley on sippy cups, we used the soft-spout Nuby ones, but after being dropped a couple of times they started leaking like CRAZY.

We got him switched to the hard spout ones, so now we use the Playtex Insulators (we actually just switched to Stage 4s). They don't leak, and keep the contents colder longer. I really like them.

We do still use the Nuby straw sippys (only for water) too.
 
My daughter bought the soft tip nubys for my 16 month old grandson but he really enjoys turning them upside down on his tray and bending the spout so the liquid squirts out! So I am going to buy him a couple of the hard spouted ones for my home.
 
We've always used Playtex and my mo and ILs have a few Nuby's since they are cheaper. To clean the lids, I just use a BBQ brush...you know, the ones to slather on the sauce? Kristen (6) still uses a sippy on occasion (guess DH didn't get the memo that she doesn't use them anymore) and Kaylee is 3 and still uses them exclusively.
 
We only use the straw cups now- my daughter loves to drink out of a straw! She is almost 2 and can drink out of a regular cup but spills sometimes- its easier for me to give her the straw cups lol
 
I gave all of ours to MIL a few weeks ago because I was sick of messing with them. The only ones I kept were the First Years throwaway ones with the spouts or with the straws. That way when they get really nasty I can just throw them away. LOL

To replace them we got each of the kids a couple of THESE. They're kind of $$$ as sippy's go but they keep things cold really well and the straws are easy to remove to clean - and they're cute! :) They come in patterns in the store - we have pink, purple & black camo, Barbie, Hannah Montana and Cars. :) My 1 year old even uses one since he learned to drink from a straw. They're not spillproof when they're open, but they are when they're closed.
 
Well, I happen to have fallen in love with couple of ones by Foogo - here and here. They are the metal ones by Thermos and they are amazing. I can't send milk with DS to PreSchool and it's still cold when he gets home. They come in pink and blue and are super easy to clean. We also have the bigger one but that's just for water as it has a straw and I hate nasty anything in a straw. Although, because of the way they are made, the straw probably wouldn't get icky because they keep things cold for up to 6 hours.

The playtex ones are definet;y the best for not leaking!!! I get the ones that you can insert a photo into, then I can make it as cute as I want, Penny has some great templates for that!

We used the Playtex insulated ones until they were 3 or so. Then we moved to the 1st Years Take & Toss ones. They have no valve, so they will leak if left sideways, but they don't spill if just knocked over. You get enough ripped out to make the point of paying attention without the big mess to clean up. You can also get them with straws. DS1 is almost 6. He uses the straw version around the house but has a regular cup when he is eating at the table. DS2 is 4 and still uses the sippy version unless it's something thick like a smoothy, the sippy doesn't work well with thick beverages. The cups can alsp be used without the lids

They come in assorted themes. I think we have Cars & Backyardigans plus a bunch of just solids. You can get them just about anywhere. They go in the dishwasher & they are cheap, about $6 for 5 cups & lids. Plus they don't have BPA in them
 
We use the playtex insulators too.

I prefer sippy cups that have a removeable valve. When he is at home he drinks with out the valve and because of that, at 19months he can drink from a cup with minimal problems. When we are out and about and it is in the diaper bag we use the valve for spill protection.
