You know..if the media was unbiased it would really help people I think listen to the canidates and form their own opinions. The media however ruins it I think for a lot of people AND canidates.

No kidding! I just want the facts. And why do commentators have to wear ugly clothes?

I'm registered as a republican so that's what I voted. I really got disgusted a couple years back and now proclaim myself independent. About time I change that affiliation  LOL. I've never voted a straight party ticket. Depends on the office, the issues, etc... There are some things that are deal breakers for me but other than that I can go either way.

Proud Democrat, and I think I'm quite moral, thank you very much.

I'm Rep, but I would never say Democrats are immoral.... I hope none of us made you feel like that's what we were saying! I can respect everyone's views. ;)

Oh, and I'm not educated enough yet about either McCain OR Obama... so I still don't know who I'm voting for!

I'm very much a Republican on most issues but try to look deep into each candidate's stand on the issues and vote accordingly.

I normally vote Democrat on the national ticket, and most of my family does too, but I always keep an open mind. I really vote for the person who I feel best represents my beliefs and will run the country in the direction I believe it should go. Usually I'm somewhat on the fence, and so I hem and haw for a while, watch some of the debates, read the paper, and then vote for a Democrat in the end. However, this year I'm really on the fence more than usual - I'll have to see the debates etc. and really listen hard.
On the local scene, I'm all over the place - I don't vote by party at all and I tend to have a 50/50 split between the parties - that really depends on what I read in the paper about their stances on various matters...

Republician. But I bet you knew that.

Interesting poll. I wonder also if people choose their affiliations because of life experience, how they were raised or because of issue beliefs.
I was raised ultra conservative old-school...I mean sooooo red...Republican...I ran from that as soon as I could and now make up my own mind according to the values and morals of my family, which unfortunately aren't always so conservative.

I tend to vote Republican, except on the local level, because I'm from Arkansas where it's only been in the last few years that a Republican vote could even count. The big issues for me are abortion and big government {I'm against both}.

I am a hardcore Democrat. I work in Democratic politics getting candidates elected so it is very important to me. My first job out of college was for EMILY'S List if that tells ya anything lol

I'm not registered for either party because when I first registered I had no clue which party to join up with. I listened to both speeches from Obama and McCain and still feel that both have their pros and cons. And while they both talk of all that they are going to do and what the other isn't going to do, I still think in the end, they are ultimately powerless and congress is going to do what it wants to and for the American people.

so, do I know who I am going to vote for? not decided yet....

I'm definitely a Democrat and have been a political/news junkie since grade school. My view on social and health care issues generally guides my support of any candidate, though my personal behavior is pretty conservative.

I agree 100000000000000% I despise the media.

I'm registered independent. I'm considering switching my affiliation so I can vote in the primaries next time. But we'll see. My parents never shared their political views with us growing up. And the funny thing is that I consider myself liberal leaning, and would think my parents were more conservative leaning, but I'm the only one in the family to vote for Bush in the last election.

Having said that, I'm a middle of the road sort of person. On some issues I'm most definitely republican, and on others I'm 100% democrat. I wish the candidates could take more moderate view points, instead of being forced to one extreme or the other. I think a lot of people are middle of the road, and there's really no candidate for that. It also depends on the candidate themselves. I could not STAND John Kerry, and thus voted for Bush in the last election despite having most of my views side with Kerry. I just couldn't bring myself to vote for him. Plus, I don't believe in removing a sitting president during a war.

I don't know enough about the candidates yet to make a decision on who I'm voting for. It'll depend on where they stand on the bigger issues. I know I need to do a lot more research in the next 9 weeks.

I was raised with both.. my mother is a Republican and my father a Democrat. I'm a Democrat and my brother is a Republican. So we basically cancel each other out. LOL

I will say that there are more Dems here than I thought. LOL

I am an independent, usually Green, who will be voting Libertarian this year. I am a fiscally conservative, morally liberal, pro-choice, gun owning pagan in a military coven & I want less government in my life. I decided 20 years ago that the issue that matters most to me is that the current system is broken & the varying shades of grey on offer are not going to fix it. Real change will come with a viable 3rd party shaking up the business as usual in Washington. To that end I have always voted for Nader, except when I voted for Perot. :)

My parents were middle of the road Democrats who have slowly become middle of the road Republicans. Except for when they voted for Perot.

I'm a registered Democrat but I'm not sure I could really be called a true dem. I don't really fit in either party. ;) I'm a little too liberal for some of the traditional republican views and a little too conservative for some of the traditional democrat views. The story of my life. LOL

I'm a registered Republican although my views lean a bit towards the Libertarian side. I'm all about small government, capitalism and am pretty conservative on moral issues.

I just saw the part asking about why-

So...when I was growing up my mom was sorta liberal (your old school southern reagan democrat) and daddy was always conservative. They never swayed my politics or influenced me and it wasn't something we discussed. I turned out way to the right of mom and pretty much identical to my dad's views. I've typed this out a bunch of times and erased and started over. I'd like to say why I think the way I do but I know Lauren didn't want this to be a debate and I certainly don't want to turn it into one. Let's just say I'm equal to Sarah Palin in my beliefs. I have more faith in the American people than the government. I like my guns, support small businesses and I go for the old kill taxes not babies saying ;)

I was once a very progressive liberal...now my ideologies have mellowed and I'm much more of a centrist. I am very middle of the road/independent. My beliefs are all over the spectrum depending on the issue. On some issues I am more conservative, on others more liberal. I have found that my evolution of beliefs has made me more practical and more open minded.

eta: about the why...I grew up in a cosmopolitan area (read: near a large city), the tone of politics there was always quite liberal. My parents were more conservative than their fellows in the area. Went to a fabulous university, studied sociology/anthropology and that gave me a more in depth perspective of the world and people. I was very liberal at that time. Then I met, fell in love with and married a man I never would have dreamed for myself...a conservative, military service member. I think we've both drawn each other to the middle more. I like to think of my perspective as more balanced and not as hard line now. I think he would say the same. But the true tempering of my beliefs happened on September 11, 2001 when my ideological bubble was burst.

Well I put down Republican because that's what I'm registered as! But that doesn't mean I ALWAYS vote for that party.

I want the least amount of government as possible, I'm conservative on moral issues, but i'm for protecting the environment/wildlife, etc.

We're actually considering moving to Vancouver if McCain gets in office. I'm not joking, I can't take another 4 years Republican, I just can't.

The last political spectrum questionaire I filled out called me a "progressive liberal." I fairly liberal on most issues, with probably the exception of gun control, and I mostly vote Democrat. I am not a party line voter though.

I'm republican but vote according to who I think is best regardless of party. However I also make sure they are military friendly and most democrats are not. When they are in office, pay raises and such suck for those serving this country.
