My Rebel stopped working a few weeks ago and I just got word today that it will cost $360 + tax to get it fixed. Would you do that, get it sent back to get a "second opinion", or just go buy a new one? We really can't afford any of the options, but I want my Rebel back and will charge it if I have to! What would YOU do?

Ouch! Sorry sweetie about your camera. It's hard to say but I'd probably ask for it back and get another opinion and see how it looks from there.

I think I'd get a second opinion on the repair cost...but I don't know. Andrew would suggest we just save for something better and say that my P&S is good enough in the mean time. (Ha! As if!)

I ran into this exact situation and ended up selling the broken rebel on ebay for $100 and then purchasing a new, upgraded DSLR (40D). I just couldn't justify the expense of fixing it knowing that a new one wouldn't cost much more than that, kwim?

Good luck- hard decision!

if I could afford it Id get a new one. A brand new one would not cost a whole lot more. But if not probably get a second opinion. Possibly try to find a used one for sale that is working and sell the broken one on ebay?

I'd get a second opinion on the cost. If it was similar I'd probably just get a new one and sell the old one 'as is'. Someone might want it for parts or something

Unfortunately I was faced with this situation not too long ago. I have the D80. DH dropped my camera bag and my lens broke, unknown to me. I used the camera for about a month after that and then one day it decided it wasn't going to work anymore. Sent it off to Nikon (without a warranty) and they told me the shutter release was broken by a piece of plastic from when the lens broke. $230 later I had my camera back.

If I could have afforded it, I would have just bought the D90 body instead of having my D80 fixed but that wasn't an option for me, especially since I had to buy a new lens too.

I think it's totally what you feel comfortable with. Good luck with whatever you decide!
