What is your design style? Simple or More complex

I love all styles of scrapbook and am in awe of the beautiful pages I see in the gallery. The majority of the time my layouts start with a template and then I go from there. I love clusters and tend to put as many of them on there as I feel looks good. What is your style?

I'm a maximalist through and through but I do really admire clean and simple pages! I'm trying SO hard to do a very minimalist Disney album for a trip I took with my sister this year. It's taking me so much longer because I overthink everything!

Btw, what do you mean by a stencil? Like a template? When I think of a stencil I think of those plastic things you lay over paper and then trace the inside lines with a pencil. I'm just curious what it means to you!? :D

I am so glad you caught that! I meant to type template! I haven't stenciled, with paint, in years and wasn't that good at it! Ha!ha! I did have stencils for my elementary students to use for fun, though! :)

Funny thing is that I was going to write "plastic things from our childhood" but then I thought that some people probably do still use them in adulthood even if I don't! Lol...

So funny Cassie we had those shine through colorful square stencils too in my childhood. lol animals, letters zoo animals etc etc. so I see them right in my head how they looked like back than.

My style is different I used to scrap messy and artful in the past, but I mostly use templates now too and go from there add extra stuff or less.
I used to blend a lot of paper in the past as well which I do not often anymore. What not changed is that I love to cluster a lot!

Also team maximalist here.

I've been trying to attempt clean and simple pages but I keep wanting one more photo or one more element or one more paper!

Stencils were fun!!

Team Maximalist...sometimes I think I overdo it but try to move on bc there are always more photos to scrap! ;)

I gave up on trying to nail down my style a long time ago. I scrap in all different ways depending on why I’m scrapping and where my mood takes me.

If I’m scrapping for memory preservation I usually start with a template, use lots of photos, and try to include journaling and/or dates.

If I’m art journaling I start with a blank slate and scrap on vibes. Sometimes I have a plan of what I want to create, sometimes I just have an issue I’m trying to work out on the page. These layouts are usually more artistic and emotive.

I also really love minimalist scrapping! These pages come together fast and are so beautifully clean and simple. It’s not my everyday way of scrapping, but sometimes my brain craves that modern look and quick dopamine hit.

I also love maximalist cluster scrapping. There’s something so satisfying about taking a file full of elements and building something complex and layered. I don’t usually use templates for these pages.

Then there’s this other category that I don’t quite have a name for where I use extractions alongside other elements. It’s not traditional scrapping or art journaling or clustering or clean and simple… I don’t really know what to call it. But these pages almost always have a plan in my brain before I make them.

When I’m scrapping for the creative team I use a mixture of these types of pages. I usually let the kit dictate what kind of page it becomes… but occasionally I have an idea simmering in the back of my brain and then a kit comes along that’s perfect for my vision.

I used to put a lot of stock in trying to find my style and feeling frustrated that I just couldn’t be consistent with one style. I greatly admired other scrappers who could master their style and just seemed to always create these masterpieces that you knew right away was theirs.

… but that’s not the kind of person I am! I’m not consistent and trying to be just lead to disappointment. So I’ve embraced the chaos. Maybe not consistent, but I am persistent. So what if I can’t master every style of scrapping and some come easier than others; I’ll never stop playing and experimenting with all the different styles that make my heart happy!!

I am definitely a maximalist. I want to put as many elements on a page as I can!
I do love minimalist layouts and admire them in the gallery, but I get so hung up anytime I try to do one!

I'd have to say I, too am a maximalist. I love flower clusters with lots of greenery. I love artsy pages, but just haven't ever been able to get them where I'm happy with them.
I love that there are so many different types of scrapbooking here at SSD!! Never a lack of inspiration!

Karli, your pages are always amazing, no matter what style you are scrapping with!

I guess you could say I do more simple pages. That is I try to get as many photos on the page as I can (so you can still see what the photo is) and tell the story behind the photos.

However, I have moved from the very simple to more creative as I've learned how to cluster and what looks good with the photos. Having good templates helps. I learned how to cluster by using Fiddle-Dee-Dee's templates. I still struggle with creating clusters that have other things besides flowers and greenery in them but I'm trying!

I admire a lot of pages done by the creative teams but in the end, they are not really my style of scrapping. Although I do try to copy some of them in what Fiddle-Dee-Dee used to call "Dressed Down". At one time she sold templates in the "Dressed Up" version with lots of elements and clusters on them or in the "Dressed Down" version which was a more basic version with a few elements and small clusters.

There are times when I will do a more minimalist page when that is what the photo calls for.

I know what my style is not. I am not artsy or simple. I have done a few artsy pages in the past, but they feel like they are missing something. Simple clean pages are just too hard to do when I feel I have so many photos that still need to be scrapped!

I think my style is more cluttered and photo focused. I like the photos to tell a story, the more photos the better. For me, the kit is used to compliment the photos, not compete with them!

I am a minimalist. I lean to very simple page designs, but will layer things up and fill templates for my CT work. I love solid papers and journalling.

I generally will create multi-photo layouts. But as the children have grown up and I have fewer cute photos from them, I now will do single photo designs. Usually with florals and greenery. Never clean and simple, more like traditional paper scrapbooking.

I feel like Karli. I don't think I have a particular style but I would say that I love to go "artsy" with paints and stuff.
I also think I am more of a maximalist than minimalist. Can't help but adding that little extra thingie because it looks cute! :D

This is such a great point! As you learn new techniques or technologies advance (like with extraction) certain styles become easier to master.

I love that you used templates to hone your clustering skills. I think our template designers would be tickled to know that :)

Oh, Cheryl definitely knows! I don't even use any of the PS programs but I've been watching her Watch Cheryl scrap videos for years. Just watching her create clusters is a learning experience.

I'm a bit of both, and lately, I try to do pages using artsy kits. It was challenging but I really like to learn.

As much as I love clean lines and white space layouts, I just love ALL THE STUFF too much and love to use as much of it on my pages as I can!

I find that I tend to scrap different styles for different pages. Thoughtful, reflective and emotional pages tend towards the artsy style, whereas my storytelling pages tend towards more linear but still with lots of embellishments. I also love patterned papers so you'll often see a lot of those on my pages too.

I don't have a particular style...or at least I think so, but I do LOVE
my flowers and greenery and I'm a template scrapper!!
Ohh and Papers...I'm a sucker for all kinds of papers
