What have you discovered lately?

Either in yourself, your kids, or other family members? Something positive.

I'm on an interview kick with my girls right now, and some of their answers have really surprised me. My 9 yr old, who comes across as really quite shy, chose herself as being the most successful person she knows (see reasons below). That really blew me away. I love that her definition of success isn't about money or status. And I love that her hero is her Daddy. I love that when given the chance to change anything about herself, she didn't focus on a physical aspect, but instead wanted to become even smarter than she already is. Ahhhh.....I'm so proud of my girls right now.

Have you discovered, or noticed anything new about yourself, or your loved ones?

Mine is a small thing, but my 13 y.o. DD looked at my plate at dinner the other night and said "are you going to eat that zucchini?" and then she picked it up and ate it. In a million years, I would never voluntarily eat zucchini and I have no idea when or where she decided zucchini was good to eat. I didn't even know she knew what zucchini was!

That's amazing confidence, Jacinda! I hope she can hold onto it through the tween years!

And Dawn, my kids randomly have started loving veggies, especially zucchini. It's hilarious that a 2 year old and 3 year old ask for seconds and thirds even when the rest of the meal is pizza or Mac and cheese.

I know this is a really weird thing to be proud of, but it's been a busy month with lots of visitors so DS has started wetting the bed again. His reaction is so mature. He wakes up, changes clothes, switches his pillow to the opposite end of the bed, and comes in to ask me to turn on his music. What used to be tears and panic because I'd change his sheets has become a simple solution that he came up with all on his own. It's strange to say, but he's dealing with wetting the bed in such a mature manner, and it just gives me so much hope that the threes are really almost over (he'll be 4 in August).

I've discovered how mature Jake (age 6) is becoming... this last weekend we had a rummage sale where some beloved, out grown, toys were for sale. One such toy was a fisher price train set that I got at a rummage sale years ago and we added to it with an ebay purchase... Jake stopped playing with it when he started to love Thomas the Train.

It was out at the sale on Thursday and Jake starts playing with it - having a grand ol' time laying track... probably the most he ever played with it. I had made a comment to my mom that if it doesn't sell, I'll take it along camping for Jake and Dennis (Godfather's 2 year old who loves trains, too)... well, no more than 10 min later, a little girl joins Jake in playing with the trains. Jake is in 7th heaven to have someone to play with and they are chatting away, have a great time. On the way out, the mom of the little girl asks her if she likes this train and of course the 4 year old girl says yes... and the mom buys it. I tell Jake that we need to pack up the train for the little girl. Jake asks why and I told him that the little girls mom just bought the train and it's going to go home with the little girl. I was totally expecting tears and pleading for the toy to stay... it was late in the afternoon and he was tired... but, he just looked at the little girl and said, okay... started to put the pieces back in the box and even helped the mom carry it to her car.

I was so proud - and a bit sad... my son is growing up...

Jacinda, I LOVE these interview layouts you're doing. I'm going to totally scraplift them for my boys...(Can someone tell Laura that'd make a great scraplift challenge??)

Rebecca and Megan, don't you LOVE it when they show maturity??

Dawn, my kids love broccoli, and I'm like WHO. LOVES. BROCCOLI?? that's crazy stuff.

Recently I have discovered that I want to marry Mocha Moolattes from Dairy Queen. I could seriously drink one every day & not mind getting fat because it's the most delicious thing in all the world.

Kellie, I spend a large part of the day trying to banish DQ Cookie Jar Blizzards from my mind. DQ is evil (but delicious).

I like doing interviews too. I discovered the other day that my daughter thinks she is shy. I was shocked. We don't think she is shy and her friends don't consider her shy. She has amazing confidence though, which is something I never had at her age.

Hmm... something I've discovered... something positive...

I've discovered my 7 year old has an amazingly strategic mind. My DH bought the game Stratego. DH is great at strategy type things. Declan completely blew us away and whooped his dad in the game the first time they played, despite my husband trying his hardest to win. He has since beat his dad a few more times. I think my husband has won once. LOL It literally hurts my brain to play such games and I don't consider them fun so I find it pretty cool that my son is such a natural at them.

I've discovered my daughter is psyched and READY for middle school. Oh how I wish I had been when I started Jr. High! She is taking a month long summer course for STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) at the middle school this summer and she loves it so much. She's met several of the teachers who she will have (or at least be exposed to) in 6th grade and she has had a chance to get to know the school more and she's just totally excited. She can't wait! I am so happy that she is so excited about moving on from elementary school. I'm a little bummed about it myself as it means she is growing up.

I've discovered that I am super excited about my new position at work next year! I will get to spend more time with students than I have the past two years and that really makes me happy. Two years ago, when I first started working at the school, I would have freaked out a little at the idea. My own kids can grate on my nerves pretty quickly so I figured I'd really suck dealing with kids on a full time basis. I started part time and worked in the ISS/Detention room (we call it the Choice Room since kids visit for making poor choices) and never had more than 10 kids at a time (on a busy, busy day). Now I will get the opportunity to be around ALL of the kids, not just those who are in trouble or needing extra help. I'm so excited! I'm also feeling pretty confident about the technical side of my job... but we'll see how long that lasts. ;) I will be the new technology aide and responsible for keeping all of the tech stuff in the building up and running. I shadowed my predecessor for about 6 weeks at the end of last school year, so hopefully I am ready. :)

Lastly, I am very proud of DH and I. We have been working so hard (Dave Ramsey style) to pay off everything. We got down to only having a few thousand left on the van. Tornado season kicked in and we ended up driving up to the school I work at (closest storm shelter) several times within a few days. After mulling it over for a while, we decided to go ahead and get a storm shelter NOW instead of waiting until everything was paid off and paying cash. It was a hard decision, but I have to look at it as life insurance. We don't hesitate to pay for life insurance, you know? Anyway, we found a short term loan with a really low interest rate and applied for that to get the shelter. I'm always a nervous one when it comes to such things and I was holding my breath until we found out whether we were qualified or not. The gal came in and said "well, you're qualified, but..." and I began to panic. Then she went on to say that they were offering us a $15K pre-approved credit card. I was kind of shocked, totally not what I was expecting. Anyway, this is where the pride comes in... I'm proud that we have worked hard enough to pay off everything that we qualified for such a large line of credit and I'm even MORE proud that we had the good sense to politely say 'no thank you'. :) The storm shelter will put us back about 3 months on our plan to pay everything off, so it isn't a big blip on the radar in the grand scheme of things. And, in the meantime, we have a SAFE place to hang out if the weather is scary! :D

** Oh, and I realize that for some $15K is just a drop in the bucket. However, we live in small, poor, area and that amount goes a long way. Our previous credit accounts have never been that bit (thankfully, as we would have racked up even more debt!). Also, less than a year ago our credit was so bad that we wouldn't have qualified for a $1K credit card. Sad but true.

I have discovered that even though the toughest decisions I have ever had to make, was hard, and took me years to believe that I would be okay, or that I deserved to be happy, it was completely worth it. That there will still be tough times, life's not going to be easy, but being happy and feeling like I can breathe again, is the BEST feeling. I am stronger and more determined than I would have ever given myself credit for. I am loveable and beautiful and worthy. I am going to be okay. I am going to be more than okay.
