What exactly is Instagram?

I should know this but I don't! What exactly is Instragram? I know people use it to post photos, but that's about where my knowledge stops. Is it an app of some sort?
 
yes it is an app that you can get for your android or iPhone. Here is what wikipedia says it its since it explains it better than i can lol

Instagram is a free photo sharing program launched in October 2010 that allows users to take a photo, apply a digital filter to it, and then share it on a variety of social networking services, including Instagram's own site.

It differs from other apps like Hipstamatic, Snapseed and Phototoaster, in that when you use Instagram, it's very much tied into its social network.

You can use Hipstamatic without using a social network. But you choose the filters for Hipstamatic photos before you take the photo. Hipstamatic is retro in that once you have taken your photo with a vintage filter, you are pretty much stuck with it. I think that Instagram allows you to take the photo first and then apply the filters. Am I correct?

Snapseed and Phototoaster allow you to apply various filters as well as make photo corrections and make photos that are similar in appearance to Instagram and Hipstamatic without 1) the social network aspect (integral to Instagram) and the 2) commitment to a photo filter required of Hipstamatic. You take the photo on your iPhone with whatever app you choose then use Snapseed or Phototoaster to resize the photo (say to a square 2X2) and apply whatever sharpening, filter, frame, etc. you choose. You can upload to FB, Twitter, or email from these apps.

I don't have a smart phone, but I just got an iPod Touch with a camera. Can I use Instagram with it? I'm always so jealous of the cool people who post Instagram pictures on FB.
 
You should be able to, Kellie. If you have a camera, and an internet connection, you should be good to go.
 
and if you don't want to share your photographs with the instagram online community you just change your phone to airplane mode before editing and then they are just saved to your camera roll for you to do whatever you want with
