What do you use to store flour, sugar, etc?

Okay so I have a set of canisters similar to this:
Canisters

But they are white and came with like 3 little ones as well (and only cost us like $10).

As cute as they are, they are so not practical to me. My two biggest problems are that they don't match anymore--our house has black appliances, and we have no counterspace for them, at all. And if we did, they'd look silly because they are white! I don't like a ton of stuff on the counters anyway. So, they sit on a shelf in the pantry and are really useless.

My other problem with them is they are so small, at least, for sugar and flour--things we use the most of when we use them! Flour is in the biggest one and it maybe holds 5 cups, so when I make bread or cookies and use 3-5 cups of flour, it's empty.

Anyway, that was a super super long explanation when really, I just want to know what other people do? I am thinking of just getting some bigger sized tupperware and store it in there, but I don't know. Anyway ideas for me?

And what do you do with things you use less of like brown sugar, powdered sugar, etc...

Thanks!!! :)

oh I had some of those.. they're useless LOL.. I stored tea bags in one and the others just slowly disappeared. actually one is on my desk as a penny jar now..
anyway......

Big giant tupperware containers.. like tall fat ones.

honestly I use the bag flour comes in LOL. I do not bake alot so I just put the bag in a ziploc baggie and seal it. Sugar we use a ton of and have a large bowl with plastic lid we bought at walmart. We go through like a gallon of sweet tea a day though so we go through probably five pounds of sugar every week or two?. Powderered sugar and brown sugar I buy in a box so I just store it in the box thye come in.

I use big tupperware ones--- the Tupperware storage containers are usually 40% off every January, so I stocked up then. I really love them!

thanks guys, that's what I was hoping to hear!

Allie, maybe i'll hold off until January... where are they 40% off? anywhere?

HA, HA.. I too have those in white... I hate them!

I store my flour in the freezer, so it goes into a zipploc bag... for sugars, I'm a OXO fantatic and love, love these so much that I want to marry them!!! Pricy, but awesome!! I wait for coupons to Kolh's or Bed and Bath.

If I had the perfect kitchen, I'd use these:

But I don't. I have a pantry it all stays in, so I don't have anything pretty - just big Rubbermaid canisters. I buy flour in 25lb bags, so it get split up into 2 gallon ziplocks that are put in the freezer for awhile, then transferred to the pantry to be refills for the container. I use a snap lid system that I used to buy at Target, but they've been phasing them out.

When checking the site, seems Rubbermaid is now doing a Lock-it line which is similar to what I was buying before.

Do those Oxo containers stack? It looks like it in the photo, but I can't tell from the big canister whether there is an indention for the lock from the lid.

After they are empty, they usually just throw them away.
I have one for flour and one for sugar. I keep them in the bags they come in, and just stick the bag in the container. I keep one canister of sugar on my counter, the rest stays in the big container. And I don't keep flour out, I don't use it very often. They sit in my laundry room cupboard as I don't have a pantry.

Mine all stays in the cupboard, in the bags it came in. I have canisters, but there's hardly ever anything in them. We don't drink tea or coffee, so there isn't really a need to have sugar out and accessible all the time. I don't bake much either, so the same goes for the flour.

I have metal canisters with glass lids. I got them at one of those housewear stores or maybe an outlet. They come in small (coffee) medium (brown sugar) large (white sugar) and huge (white flour). I also use large mason jars for raw sugar, soy flour, rice flour & powdered sugar.

I have been wanting to use these as well--for flour (maybe sugar) but mostly for all this wheat I have for storage... but I've been scared to ask for them! Where do I go? What do I ask for? I was going to just go to target and ask for their frosting/ice cream buckets... but I need a lot!

Sarah- it's 40% off in January everywhere in the US (at least it was last year). I just went on their website and searched for a local tupperware chick and ordered these from her (the big ones). I LOVE them. They're good sized and they fit good in my pantry.

Yes, they do stack... but you have to watch sizes... if it's rectangle, then the smaller rectangle size stack... but they aren't wide enough to take on two squares size containers, if that makes sense...

We received this set as a wedding present and they're totally useless. They aren't wide enough to actually get a measuring cup in there so right now we use them for kosher salt, a meat rub my DH made and whatever seasonal candy we may have at the time.

Everything else is just randomly in the pantry right now. I think I'd like to get something like this: Modular Mates® Rectangulars or Squares. My mom uses them for storing all her baking stuff and they're great because they hold a lot and are easy to get measuring cups in and out of.

I just leave it in the bag, lol...

My mom, though, baked a LOT and used HUGE tupperware containers for the flour and sugar. All the other stuff (chocolate chips, baking powder, baking soda) etc went in tupperware containers too, just smaller ones, lol.

I've tried canisters and they just don't work for me...

If you have an ice cream store or convenience store or anything similar that sells scooped ice cream from these containers, get enough courage to ask the manager/owner if you could have a couple when they are empty.Tell them how many you want, and ask if they could hold them for you (and leave your number for them to call). I lucked out, I know one person that works at one of our stores, and I know the owner of the other store in town that sells this type of ice cream. hehehe

I don't use a lot of flour or sugar but I have some for the few times that I do. I keep mine in the bags they come in - in the freezer. I've never bought canisters because the thought of leaving that stuff out of the freezer makes me crazy.

Love my tupperware ones! Modular mates or something, but they work so good. The movers will move my baking supplies since they are stored in these, otherwise I'd have to dump them all out. I originally got them for when we were in Okinawa and bugs got into everything if you didn't seal them good. And I like that they all match and stack and I can use them for all my different staples. I need to make new labels for them though...sounds like a new hybrid project for me!
