What do you think this means? (ehdelated)

OK, first of all, let me start by saying that I'm diligent about back-up, so I'm not worried in that respect. Everything on my EHD is backed up to a bigger not-so-portable ehd as well as to Mozy online backup.

I keep my "little" ehd plugged in all the time. Well earlier this week, when I booted up my computer, I got the black screen that says something about "running system scan on drive F:" and then it goes on to say that no errors were found, blah blah blah. It had never done that before.

Then yesterday, I was working and went to open something from that drive, and the drive wasn't showing at all in my browser even though it was plugged in and turned on. So, I unplugged it, and plugged it back in, and then it showed in the list.

Then TODAY, when I booted up my computer this morning, it did the same thing with the black screen and the scan on that drive again. Not showing any errors.

So I'm wondering if this means that it's getting ready to die on me? Has anyone had any experience with this? I'll keep backing up as I work, but if I'm gonna need to be buying a new EHD soon, I need to start saving some pennies.

Thanks guys!

Check the cord. Try a different one since it sounds like it isn't communicating. And yeah...start saving pennies I bet. Hopefully it is just the cord!

I get the "consistency check" message every few months (like 3 - 4 months), but I've never had it two days in a row. Have you defraged your ehd lately? That's important, especially if you recently cleaned off a bunch of stuff.

Libby that's exactly what my ehd was doing before I thought it was completely dead and I had a breakdown. Turns out it was just the cord. It sounds like your usb cord is going bad.

OH! Thanks guys! I honestly never even THOUGHT about the cord. Mine has a fancy schmancy usb cord that it came with, so I don't know how hard that'll be to replace. i wonder if just a plain one would work. I'll run to best buy in the next few days and see if they have something that'll work.

Whew! I hope that's all it is!

Mine did too but Jeff actually had another one with the same plug ends and I've used it ever since. I would take your cord with you to best buy and they should be able to help you find a new one. :)
