What in the heck do you do to discipline a child who outright ignores you when you tell them something, and when you give them crap they pretend to not know what you are talking about?

It's making me flipping CRAZY!! Natalie will just do her own thing even when you tell her 10x to do something else or to stop or not to do something, whatever. She just does whatever she wants. I can punish her but she doesn't seem to get it!

Mason just walked in the door and he started mouthing off at me and when I told him to get back inside because I never said he could go outside, he yells that it's "not fair".

When the heck did this happen?!?!

Sorry, just needed to vent. Thank goodness DH will be home in probably a half hour and I can go curl in a ball in bed. Grrrr.
 
1. Pop them in the mouth.
2. Take them to a closet and leave them there for 20 minutes.
3. Let me handle them. :)
 
Whip their butt.
It's not the popular discipline but it worked for me and works for my kids.

no I do hear that popping in the mouth helps tons... it doesn't hurt just them really mad, but the listen!
 
oye. i have one screaming upstairs because she couldn't put her shoes on to go out to dinner. she's done it a gazillion times before, but today it was just "too hard." so DD#1 and daddy went while i am doing dishes & dl-ing some scrap goodies. and this is not the first time. she just doesn't listen, does her own thing and is so stubborn...nothing i say or do gets through to this one.

Well I can offer you some ideas, but you may not like them! LOL ;)

I can tell you though, my 3yo. is having some "listening" and "saucy" issues.

I win...I always win.
 
I tell you what, I have no idea what my mom did to me when I was little, but she sure a heck put the fear of God in me. I didn't talk back to my mother until I was 18 years old! And then it was only once! None of us were very mouthy. My sister was stubborn as all get out, but when she didn't get her way she was put in her room to scream and throw her tantrums.

I have a feeling I'm gonna need her to write a book to explain her parenting for when I have kids.

Apparently I only threw 1 very memorable tantrum in a Kmart. My mom left me in the middle of the shopping aisle to scream my head off while she finished her shopping. She checked out and people were like, aren't you gonna check on her? She was like what, like everyone in here doesn't know exactly where she is right now? (Granted, that was a good 20 years ago and whole other time and story than nowadays). When she was done she came back and got me.

I'm all for time outs in your room sitting on your bed with no toys and no books. Just sitting there. Scream all you want, I'll close the door. :p Can you tell I have no kids? LOL!

This is hard core parenting. I'm so impressed with your follow through! I wish I had more of it.

My husband would tell you, Bree, to pop them when they start talking back, that YOU are the parent so don't take crap from them. If they disobey once, verbally correct them, and after a second time, punish them. Severely.

I'm sure he's right, I just suck at implementing his good advice. But I'm glad to pass it on. ;)

I have done this. I totally leave them if they are out of control. I also take my kids to their beds and make them stay on their beds until they are done screaming. They can scream all they want as long as they are not next to me. I do occasionally spank but it doesn't work as much as I want. I have a son who is a negotiator. He will negotiate his spankings and other disciplin.

So I have learned that each child is different and each one takes different tactics. But as mentioned before....I win....I always win!!!!!!

Kellie your too funny :p

I do this all the time Cely is always saucy and has so much personality it's going to kill me as she gets older. I tell her all the time watch your mouth and if she doesn't listen she has to go to her room and sit on her bed by herself, then she gets her snacks taken away and that usually nips it in the bud!
Mason is so spoiled he totally runs all over everyone.
My oldest dd's know the boundries they dont dare mess with me, if they don't want to miss games, practice, going out on weekends or high school activities they never sass me or push my buttons or it's over. Point Blank:sleep:
 
My son (almost 4) is starting to purposely ignore me everytime I tell him to do or not to do something. He really hates to sit or stand in the corner, so we've been trying that and I think it's working! Sometimes I wanna just spank his little hiney, though!!! Argh!! :(

Is Natalie willfully disobeying, or just being clueless and head-up-in-clouds (lol)? If she's willfully disobeying I think you need to put your foot down and give her some consequences, like no games for x amount of time or something - something she would miss, you know? Spanking her never really works does it?

As for Mason, I have NO idea what you could do about his sass & mouth. It seems like he's picking up a lot of it at school, where its hard to be disciplined.

Hope it gets better! I don't even have a talking back child yet (oh, but she can sass, lol), and I'm stressed, lol!!

Well sweetie - I have to agree with the whip their butts. I know it's not mainstream anymore, but it did the trick for my grammy, my parents, me, my kids etc.

I'll tell you this - my sister does NOT believe in spanking her kids and they are OUT OF CONTROL. They walk all over her and never listen to a word she says! They will laugh in her face if she tells them to clean up their mess, or get in the house and they just walk out and do what they want. It drives me batty!

My kids got their butts whooped when they didn't listen to me or obey and now, even with the teenage crap, they obey me and they listen. They also know that I mean business. Not like I would hit them now - they're too big. LOL

But, there is truth in the old addage - spare the rod, spoil the child because I've seen it firsthand with my sister and her kids.

Kids need the discipline. It helps them feel safe and secure - if they don't have it, their "chi" is all messed up! LOL
 
Thing is my kids DO get spanked...but if I do it, they laugh at me. When DH does it, not so much. But I'm the one that has to deal with Natalie's disobedience the most (Mason is at school and gets home just before DH does).

It was just a rough day, lol...she's being fine now. Actually, so is Mason.
 
Hugs Bree! Those days are never fun. Hopefully you won't have one for a while now :)

Break out the belt. Or a wooden spoon. They won't laugh at that I bet.
 
how old do you start whopping their butt?

i have a 2yo and he lies down on the floor when he doesn't get his way! we have started spanking but not hard, and he's not afraid of it.
 
We started spanking around 6 months or so...ONLY when it was a behavior that needed to stop right then and it was never hard, just a smack on the leg (bum didn't work because it's padded by a diaper, lol).
 
Wanna know the secret my MIL told me...

Pinch them under their arm (in between their armpit and elbow) and then they'll listen. OUCH! I tried it on myself. Hurts like crazy!

I am totally with Leah---my 3 year old is also having a listening problem---ooo weeee---I aggree tho I always win too :))

((my parents spanked me---I think I turned out okay lol!))
