What do apples have to do with Twilight?

Last night I woke up in the middle of the night pondering this question. Then I realized that my mind was being controlled and I SHOULD know the answer but I couldn't figure it out because of the mind control.

clearly i don't think straight in the middle of the night. I get that from my mom. She made me clean up my own puke once in the middle of the night when i was ten because i woke her up. and she felt completely justified too since i threw up on my clothes which were laying on the floor by my bed instead of in the dresser where she'd told me to put them.

but back to the original question: why is there an apple on the cover of twilight? will it make more sense the further i get into the series? i've only read that one, but the only mention of an apple i remember was when rosalie didn't eat it on her lunch tray and threw it away. very insignificant i'd think. clearly not important enough to make the cover of the book.

so don't spoil the series for me, but if someone could explain the apple connection, i'd appreciate it.

I'd like to know too! LOL... I'm not even reading the books (yet) but several people told me that my Apple of My Eye kit was geared to the readers of the Twilight series. I am baffled!

at some point while reading the book, I'm sure the apple made sense to me. But now I can't remember why. sorreeee.

Honestly, I have no idea. To tell you the truth, none of the covers of any of the books made much sense to me. But the apple? Not a clue - I don't remember anything significant about the apple. I'm thinking Libby is right - probably something about the forbidden fruit.

On Stephenie's site she says the apple represents the forbidden fruit :).

Here is her Twilight FAQ

There is another part in Twilight when Bella is asking Edward all those questions about himself. She asks him if he could eat food if someone dared him to eat it. So he picks up an apple and takes a bite.

here ya go...straight from Stephanie Meyer's website... (www.stephaniemeyer.com)

What's with the apple?
The apple on the cover of Twilight represents "forbidden fruit." I used the scripture from Genesis (located just after the table of contents) because I loved the phrase "the fruit of the knowledge of good and evil." Isn't this exactly what Bella ends up with? A working knowledge of what good is, and what evil is. The nice thing about the apple is it has so many symbolic roots. You've got the apple in Snow White, one bite and you're frozen forever in a state of not-quite-death... Then you have Paris and the golden apple in Greek mythology—look how much trouble that started. Apples are quite the versatile fruit. In the end, I love the beautiful simplicity of the picture. To me it says: choice.

eta:haha, I was cutting and pasting while tabatha posted!

Thanks for the link, Tabatha.

And in regards to the movie, do you think maybe the casting director didn't read the book and therefore didn't know, when casting Edward, that he was supposed to be so beautiful he made her willing to DIE? Because i'm not getting that vibe from the movie previews.

Yeah, he does nothing for me and the previews haven't shown me the emotion I feel from the book either! Of course it won't be as good, but it needs to be good still!

Some of the previews I think he's pretty cute. But that's it. Cute. Definitely not what Edward should be. I really hope the way he is in the movie can convince me. I'm not sure who I think it should be, but he is not what I envisioned.

That guy doesn't do anything for me either...but I don't know that I would be all worked over at the sight of Colin Firth before I saw him in Pride and Prejudice (the REAL P&P...not that sorry Keira Knightley knock-off LOL)...his character is what made him so freakin' hot.

You know what, that is an excellent point. Colin is an excellent actor; I hated him when I was supposed to hate him and I loved him when I was supposed to love him. I hope I'll feel this way about Edward.

I really have racked my brain and I cannot for the life of me figure out who is worthy to play his character, either.

ok, this was the part I was trying to remember!
thank you, Tabatha!

I read that they had already cast Kristen as Bella and then Robert Pattinson came to read scenes while they were still trying to cast Edward. I guess the chemistry between them was so hot that they decided to go with him even if there might have been other actors that looked a bit more like Edward.

A girl that I go to church with - when we were having this discussion at a park day - said innocently, "Well, don't you picture your husband as Edward when you're reading?" We all about died laughing:)

HAHAHA!! As much as I love my husband, he is definitely not who I picture when I'm reading!! LOL!!

See, I think the chemistry between Bella and Edward in the movie could convince me also!! I'm anxious to see if they can pull it off!!

LOL at the picturing your husband. no not so much. I didn't think the guy who is playing edward looked hot, the guy playing james looks so much better imo LOL but we will probably fall in love with him in the movie just cause of the character

I think Rob Pattinson is a hottie, to me he's the perfect Edward! But I saw the movie trailer before I ever read the books, in fact that was what finally made me actually want to read them! So he was the Edward I pictured in my mind when I read the books, and I think he's going to be awesome in the movie!!

I know nothing about these books... lol.. but I just wanted to say that is the sweetest thing ever :)

I think it was a slice of pizza, actually. :)

Okay, I understood about the forbidden fruit thing, but I don't really understand about the flower in New Moon and until last night, the chess pieces in Breaking Dawn. Then I read an article in either MTV or LA News and I love Stephenie's explanation: how both the pawn (weakest piece) and the Queen (most powerful piece) is Bella. So the book represents Bella's transition.

I never really had a specific person as Edward in my head when I first started this series, so when Rob Pattinson came around I totally embraced the idea of him as Edward. He's dreamy-hot  I do hope his performance measures up, though. I'm hoping so much it's painful :p

I too know nothing about these books, but I totally agree about picturing your hubby being the sweetest thing ever!! lol!!!

And yeah, Colin Firth in the real P&P was AMAZING! ;) I  him!

And now I am off to watch trailers so I can at least chime in as to whether this guy is a hottie or not.. :D

So, I just watched all the trailers on the Twilight movie site, and I have to say that I am quite intrigued by the guy playing Edward. Plus IRL he has an accent and that's always hot imo. lol! I could definitely see him being totally yummy if he plays an awesome character....

I think he's adorable too, but I'm not sure I would agree he is as beautiful as Bella describes him. We'll see if the chemistry and his personality adds more to the character. I sure hope so.

I have to admit that I am totally not crazy about the Edward or Bella choices either but I don't think they would ever be able to match a character that perfectly would they? I finished Twilight and just started New Moon so I'm still looking forward to the movie.

I fell in love with Colin Firth because of how he played Darcy. True story.

He might not be what people imagined for Edward, but he is attractive. He might fit the bill if he brings it like Colin did. Of course he'll have to break out of how I have him glued to my mind as Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Totally agree! Accents always up the hotness factor:)
