What age would this book be for?

I posted the other day about my sons reading. He mentioned wanting to read hunger games. I have never read them. I totally need to I know lol. Are they appropriate for a soon to be 8 year old (his birthday is in two weeks) I would be reading with him too if they are appropriate.
 
For me it would be a definite no.

You could read the description on Amazon. School Library Journal says Grade 7 and up.
 
The books are about games where children are forced to kill other children to survive. My oldest read them while she was in middle school. I wouldn't go much below that age myself.

Honestly, it took me less than a day to read the first one. If he's really wanting to read it, read it yourself first and decide.
 
Nope. The books are a little heavier than the movies. I told Zach he could read them once he hit like 7-8th grade.
 
I'd have to agree. I have an 8 year old. I wouldn't let him read them. My 11 year old read them over the summer (between 5th and 6th grade) but only after I read them and decided she was mature enough to read them.
 
Here are some ideas. The good news is that these are series so if he finds one he likes there are a number of stories to be read.

The Boxcar Children
Diary of a Wimpy Kid
Little House series
Chronicles of Narnia
The Magic Treehouse
Mary Poppins series
Origami Yoda series
 
My oldest is 10 and has read all the Harry Potter books, but I wouldn't suggest The Hunger Games for him yet. I'd probably let him read it if he came to me with the idea, but ideally I think they're better for 12+.
 
I have to agree with the others, 8 is not quite old enough unless a VERY mature 8. I let my 10 year old give it a try but he just wasn't feeling it. Well, and my husband let him watch the movie (when I wasn't home, grrr) so he lost interest in the book.
 
i looooved teh box car children books when i was in about 2nd grade. oh they were my favorite. see if he can get into those! hunger games is too mature
 
I wouldn't. My DH let my 9 yo watch the movie and I wasn't pleased about that. I read the Hunger Games myself, but it just wasn't my thing.
 
They really need to make more books that are for his age that are still semi chapter starter books but have pictures in them too.
 
how about the magic tree house series? Granted, I don't remember if there are any pictures at all in those.. LOL, but they're beginner chapter books, Connor loved them when he was younger. I think those are for like.. 1st-3rd grade reading levels? I don't remember.
 
Yeah I agree...8 is young for that series..

Avery is 8 and he is devouring the Magic Tree House Series right now..he also loves Beverly Cleary and I've been reading a lot of Roald Dahl books to him.
 
My thoughts were that they talk about kids as young as 12 competing (and dying, by default) in the games. Certain 12 year olds (not all 12 year olds) are old enough to read that book and identify with characters, but still be old enough to process that it's fiction.

...anyone younger probably shouldn't be reading the books.

I wish I knew of some good suggestions of dystopian fiction for that age group, but dystopian stuff like the Hunger Games can be so dark that it would be near-impossible to write it decently and still be age-appropriate.
