Well... we had the oncology appointment....

Jeff starts chemo April 23rd. Prior to chemo he will have a ct scan and a bone scan to make sure the cancer hasn't spread anywhere else.

If he were to choose to not do chemo, the chances of the cancer recurring and killing him are 65%.

With the chemo the chances are 50%. To say we are upset would be an understatement... we were hoping for much better odds. Much better.

That was rough. To have someone sit there and tell you.. just very matter of factly.. that the chances are 50% that your husband.. the love of your life.. will be dead in 5 years... was horrifying. I pray with everything I have that NONE OF YOU ever ever ever have to go through what I did today. I mean that with all my heart.

That's about all I can say for now.. it hurts too much. If anyone needs me for anything you can text me or fb me, I don't think I'll be online tonight.

Love you guys.

Sara, I am so, so sorry. I want to say though, the doctors know JACK SHIT.

My dad had Leukemia where the survival rate just to make it through chemo and go into remission was 5%. That's a 95% chance he would die. That was 9 years ago and it hasn't come back since. It can and DOES happen.

{{{HUGS}}}

ETA, it's all about attitude. My dad said that "the bastard wasn't going to get the chance to kill him" and it didn't. I know that doesn't work for everyone but I'm a firm believer that attitude CAN make the difference.

Thanks T. Jeff's prepared to fight.. now at least... i think the main problem we're having now is that we've been thinking for the last several weeks that the surgery would be it.. they said the surgery was curative surgery.. so.. to have this all thrown at us so suddenly is taking a little bit of an adjustment period.. kwim? I'm not giving up by any means.. and neither is he.. it's just... i don't think i was ready to hear that.

I'm so sorry Sara {{HUGS}} My SIL was DX with cancer a little over a year ago and I know firsthand how unnerving the statistics are. She is now cancer-free, so try to think positive as much as you can. I will keep you all in my thoughts.

*hugs* I said it on facebook, and I'll say it again here. I'm so sorry, and I hope that chemo goes easily and that Jeff beats the odds. My thoughts and prayers remain with you guys.

That is shocking and upsetting news, Sara!!! :( Thanks so much for keeping us all updated. I know this must be very hard for you. I can't imagine the pain you are feeling right now... But, thank God Jeff decided to do chemo. That extra 15% may seem small, but it might be all it takes. HUGS.

I am so, so sorry. I can actually relate to this since we've been through a similar situation this year with my ovarian cancer. It sucks for sure. Take one day at a time. Don't worry about the statistics or the big picture right now - just tackle one day at a time. One day is doable.

oh my. I'm just sick about this for you. You must be drained and devastated. We'll have to believe that Jeff is going to be a cancer survivor. He has so much to live for and people from around the globe are wishing him well. We will just have to keep him in our prayers. You've said he is a stubborn man... that is good right now. He can be stubborn and kick that cancer out of his body. We will believe he can beat all the odds. I'm thinking of you and let me know if I can do anything. ((hugs))

I am sorry you guys are going through this. I can't even imagine. My prayers are with you as they have been. I'm really praying hard not only for the chemo to work and to kick that cancer's ass but I'm also praying that the two of you are able to stay strong and Jeff is able to keep a fighting spirit.

Attitude definitely goes a long way. I wish you guys the best!

I am so sorry. It's devastating. But I have to agree with others who have said that attitude is so important. I really believe that. I've seen it with my dad. Cancer sucks, but there ARE people who defy the odds. I hope and pray that Jeff will be one of those!

Huge hugs, girl. You CAN and WILL get through this. Don't be afraid to ask for help from your friends, take some time here and there for yourself (you will need it), and cry/vent/scream if need be (you know your friends will be there to listen if you need it).

I wouldn't even give those percentages a second thought...they sound so bleak (and sometimes I wonder if doctors are trying to cover their backsides), and you need to be as positive as possible in this fight. Traci is right...attitude means a lot in this fight.

Sara that's just heartbreaking. I lost a family member to cancer when she was 34. I can't imagine what that would be like if it were my husband. I'm surrounding you in hugs and love. Praying that you both can find the strength for chemo. Positive thoughts will make all the difference!

Oh Sara, I don't even have words. I'm just sick for you guys. I'll just echo the others and say that we'll keep a positive attitude and remember you guys in prayer. You CAN overcome this!

While I don't in any way get your situation because it's not my husband, it's my grandfather, I totally hear you on how unnerving it is when they say it's a curative surgery, and then come back with statistics like that... the doctors told my grandfather that getting surgery would cure his cancer, but his odds were 50-50. ....that doesn't sound like a "cure" to me.

I'm praying for you and thinking of you guys every day. Truly, if there is anything I can do, let me know. I'm so sorry to hear about everything. ::hugs

Attitude is everything. I know he can fight it.

I'm just so heartbroken... this all seems so surreal considering you guys were told the surgery would be it... and you've had a mountain of surprise news since... You guys continue to be in my prayers and will continue to think positively... He's going to beat the odds... and he has people across the world praying for you both!!! :hugs:

I'm so sorry, Sara! Of course you weren't expecting that and need time to regroup, given how they presented the surgery to you. I don't know what words of encouragement might help right now, but he's got so many people pulling for him and so much to fight for--you can both get through this and share a long life. ((hugs))

Sara - I put it on FB, but I'll do it here, too, just in case. Seek some alternative treatments, trials, other options, and another oncologist's opinion. Make sure you've got all of your bases covered about what treatments might be available for Jeff before just jumping into this (or do so in the meantime). And if you feel it's time - seek out Cancer Treatment Centers of America. They are all about 'whole' healing. One of my best friends was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer when he was 29 - and beat it with their help (those are huge odds to beat, too).

We're praying you through this...and this is silly, but oh so appropriate right now...may the odds be ever in YOUR favor!! And may the Grace and Mercy of God go before you!!

So hard to hear. I hope he has a good attitude and is willing to fight as that does make a big difference. Lots of thoughts coming your way, all the time.

Sara, I know you and your husband must be reeling from that news right now. Cancer is a tricky ba$tard but even doctors can't predict life spans so don't take that crap to heart. Just take it one day and one step at a time and believe Jeff will be healed. I will continue to pray for you all.
