We ended up seeing the nurse practitioner, not our actual doctor, and she was just... ugh. She spent the whole time trying to convince me that it was this http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/tinea-versicolor/DS00635 which looks and sounds nothing like his spots, plus doesn't account for his eyelashes. When I asked her about those she said she had never heard of anything that would cause that, and that it is probably just his eyelashes turning blonde since mine are blonde. (Though mine are NOT white, they are golden just like Mason and Zach's. When I pointed out that not only do his spots look more like vitiligol, plus that accounts for the eyelashes as well she just completely brushed it off even when I mentioned there are easy ways to check (like the black light). She swears up and down what she said was right. John is livid that she just brushed it off. We're going to make an appointment with the actual doctor to get his opinion.
I'm seriously just so frustrated and angry with that nurse right now. I came very close to calling her an idiot by the time we were leaving.
 
ugh - the WORST!! i'm so sorry. what a waste of your time. make sure to tell your doctor what an idiot she was and that she wasn't listening to a thing you were saying...so annoyed for you.
 
Sorry about this frustrating experience. Hopefully a visit with a doctor will give you more answers about the root cause of this.
 
I seriously can't stand it when I've made an appointment with my DOCTOR and end up only being seen by a nurse. That is so frustrating!!

Definitely tell them you want to see the doctor this time...and tell them you don't appreciate how you were treated.

Ugh.....
 
Oh gosh, Trish! I am so sorry!!! I would be pissed too!

I have left the past two doctors who always seemed too busy to see me and left me with the nurse. No offense to nurses, but I am PAYING to see a doctor! If I wanted to talk to a nurse about it, I would call my SIL, grandma or aunt who are nurses for Pete's sake. LOL.
 
Grrr. I frustrated for you, Trish. Stuff like that just makes me furious! Hope you can get into the doc soon, and definitely tell him how you were treated. I hate it when medical professionals treat their patients like they're stupid and couldn't possibly understand anything that's going on with their own health.
 
So...glowbowling? Check him out under a blacklight...then you will have some evidence. Or peace of mind, either way...

Well we did the black light test. The majority was a dark red/brown/purple color, whereas the affected areas were light and an extremely pale blue almost white color. The color goes along with the vitigol. (The fungal infection the nurse was insisting on would show up a yellow/green.)
 
I can't understand why they aren't listening to you! My son was diagnosed in less than a minute. I'd be tempted to get a new doctor. Actually I would have to because my insurance does not cover nurse practitioner visits. I see the doctor each and every time.
 
I've been blessed to know some fabulous nurse practitioners, but it sounds like this issue was out of her knowledge base and it bites that she didn't call in one of her colleagues. Hope you can get to a dermatologist. And good for you that you are being a good advocate for his health care :)

The medical profession seriously frustrates me these days, and I have to wonder how in the nether worlds they get qualified, when as parents, supposed laymen, we know better.

When my son was four months old, our Dr Missed Menigitis, he wrongly diagnosed as gastroenteritis, even when we took him to ER they were like, Oh all babies get high tempreatures and fobbed us off with a student Doctor...

Luckly, and god helped us, he had his head screwed on, the halting high pitched cries alerted him and he sent us up to peadiatrics, where within 2 mins our world was turned upside down. They imeadiately sent him for a lumber puncture and a scant hour later we were told that they couldn't guarantee he would survive...

To say I now have zero faith is an understatement.

I find it scandelous that something that could indicate something serious was overlooked so shamefully, despite you giving them as much information as they needed.

Get a second opinion, don't rest till this is sorted and if you have to be Ghengis Khan Mum to do it, then so help them do it....

I am very sorry Trish you are having to deal with this, my heart goes out to you, keep your chin up, persevere, my thoughts and hopes are with you!!

Ugh - that is really frustrating! I'm getting really sick of the medical personal thinking they know all and not listening to the parents... I get that you are busy and all the paperwork, blah, blah, blah... then don't blame me when I go ballistic... :) I ran into something similar earlier this year when my son was having "bathroom" troubles and the doc on duty bushed me of and told me in so many words that I was wasting her time when appoints on HER time was for emergencies... I am not proud of it, but I went off on her... got a referral for food allergies and my mom, who was with me during the appointment, tell me that I can be her advocate for medical stuff anytime... :o

I hope that you can either get in to see a specialist or a doctor will hear your and get him what he needs!! Hugs!
 
Well we saw the NP because since they said it wasn't an illness relate visit that the soonest our doctor would be able to see us would be September 9th. But a lot of times for really early or late visits the doctor will end up coming in because he either finished up early with someone else, or someone is running late or didn't show. I think this is only the 3rd time we ended up with the NP and not the doctor, and the 1st time with this particular one. But I'm definitely talking to the doctor about her. I feel she could have handled it all in any other way than she did. Her just completely writing off what I was suggesting, after she said she didn't know of anything that caused the color loss on eyelashes and skin, just bugged me. Especially when she said that the two weren't related in her opinion and that his eyelashes were just turning blonde.

That would be fine if they were blonde and not obviously white. My oldest has blonde eyelashes and it makes it look almost like he has none. Your kiddo's are definitely turning white. How is that not obvious!?!

So sorry you had that happen to you! I'd be irate!! :(

United Health Care. I am not wild about all of their rules and would not be opposed to a nurse practitioner per say, but will not see one because of the coverage rules.

This is just so dumb. Sorry, in a word, that's how I describe it. Health care is expensive. Insurance is expensive. People don't pay to not be taken care of. Don't go into a profession of helping people if that is not what you want to do!

Anyways, rant over. Sorry you're dealing with this Trish. What a headache. I hope they get your little guy straightened out <3
