Using flash?

So does anyone else ever use flash? i have yet to find a situation in which it is okay and doesn't make my pics look horrible. i used to always use it. but now that i know how much better natural like looks i HATE using it. but i'm not experienced enough yet to always get no flash pics looking right unless i'm outside or there is enough natural light coming in a window. i hate that shadow behind the subject and it just makes it look...idk...fake or something. i bought the girls these really cute hats and i want to take a pic of them together but the lighting i my room isn't right, lol. and its cold and rainy outside so the natural light isn't that great either. guess i'll wait for a sunnier day.......or maybe i could diffuse the flash. all i have is whats on the camera-a rebel. i don't have any fancy external flashes or lighting instruments :(.

yeah, it's better if you try to diffuse it (or bounce it, but I'm not sure how you'd do that with an on-camera flash). Try putting some tissue over it, or a piece of semi-translucent plastic (like tupperware or those plastic mild cartons) and experiment.

One answer...Speed Light!! Save up and buy one!! Mine is ALWAYS on my camera...unless I am transporting it!!!

Before I got mine a few years ago...I taped a piece of tissue to mine to help soften it....it was OK but that's when I decided to ask for Best Buy gift cards for Christmas so I could get a speed light!!

can you adjust the light? I dont have an SLR but I have an advanced p&s and it has an adjustment for how much light is actually powered when using the flash. It goes from +2 to -2 (so +2, +1, 0, -1 and -2) You could maybe try using that if your camera has it?

no, i can't adjust it. but that was a good idea; i actually looked, lol. i'll try to just diffuse it. somtimes i just have to have extra light but don't want it harsh. maybe i'll save/ask for a speedlight. i haven't gotten anything new for my camera in about a year or 2. the last thing was my 50mm lens. thanks for the advice!

My speedlight made all the difference in the world because bouncing the light is so much for flattering and less harsh. Otherwise you need a pretty fast lens to take pictures indoors without a flash or a source of natural light.

I used to diffuse my pop up by taping kleenex over it  It was better than the straight on flash.

Good luck!!!!
