My mom just called to let me know that she and my Daddy will be tied up tomorrow at my grandparents house..turns out their gas tank has been leaking and it needs to be replaced...when my Mom asked my grandmother how long they'd had that tank she said it was the same one that they had installed when they built the house.......

in 1952

AND they still have the same heater in their house that was installed then too...it's a wonder the house has not just exploded on the spot! But then again..maybe they just made things to last back then :p

Wow! Our house was built in 1988 and we still have the original heating & air system and it's still going (knock on wood lol), we did have to replace the hot water heater (which we think was also original to the house) two years ago but I thought lasting almost 20yrs was pretty darn good but you don't hear about stuff like that lasting 50+ years too often!

it's crazy...the heater is one of those old old timey gas heaters where you like turn on the gas and then you take a match and hold it until it catches and pray you don't lose your eyebrows in the process..I knew it had been there since I was a little girl but I had no idea it had been there since my DADDY was little lol

oh WOW... that's quite old and impressive... they'll be amazed how much they'll be saving in energy costs with the new one.

Wow!

We still have the original heating and hot water tank in our house too, no gas though - thankfully. Ours is from 1980, and still going strong, although I would like a new hot water tank, the one we have is pretty big, but it takes forever to heat up, so once it's empty there's no more water until the next day.

Our furnace heats the house and the water and I think it's fairly new... I forgot what they told us when we bought the house last year. I know that our oil tank looks like crap though and we'll be replacing it next summer when it's emptied. We wanted to do it this year but we got a new roof instead and now that the tank is full we have to wait.

This is one of those tanks that sit outside the house..so it's been outside in the elements for nearly 50 years! I think I need to take a picture of it before they haul it away lol

Wow, that is amazing... my house is only 7 years old and I think we need a new furnace! Boy, oh boy, they don't make things like they used too!

they just made things to last back then

They sure did. The one in my aunts house is very old and it still is great. They even have an old air conditioner that works wonderfully. We have lived in our house since 2002 and we bought new air conditioners when we moved in. We've already had to replace them all and some of them even 3 times. Most of the stuff made now is junk.
