tutorial request: pin hole!

This should be so simple, but when I have a pin element make it so it is "poking" into something, like a photo or paper, I want to make a "hole" in that thing, so it doesnt just look cut off. But my holes always look...like black dots. LOL
Anyone have any great tips for this? It really shouldnt be hard!! I'm sure someone has it figured out better than me, though!
If there's already a tutorial for this, I appologize...but please give me a link! :wub:

I use the burn tool and make it darkest at the center and slowly fade out a bit.
