Tips or Tricks for photographing....

...difficult children?

Seriously. Julian is 16 months old and has been nearly impossible to get a decent photo of since he was about 10 months old. Every good or usable shot I have of him since then is either pure luck or the result of a fresh bald spot in my hair.

I am beyond frustrated. He either will not look at the camera at all OR he is looking but he's also crying and either reaching for me or crawling/walking to me whilst crying and reaching for me.

Please, I beg you....

Mine are the same way...
I've started doing it fresh from naps, where they're totally still half asleep... resulting in pics that look like I've gotten my kids' stoned...

or... and this is your best option...
you absolutely can't do it by yourself. You MUST have a baby wrangler... or forget it. Employ your dh, your neighbor, your mother... anybody, but don't try it yourself... otherwise... you'll just get a ton of baby-chasing-the-camera-to-touch-it pics.

like these were taken outside my in-laws' condo... but I had dh as baby wrangler, so he's not looking at me... but I love these shots... and this is my 2.5 WILD child.

Ah, those are adorable pictures! Lena is a pretty good wrangler for me when she's available. Julian's dad is terrible though LOL.

I'll try the nap thing, I guess stoned is better than crying LOL!

I absolutely dread getting my camera out with Julian and I hate that. I just know it's going to end up with me having a ton of crappy photos and feeling so frustrated I could scream.

Loud, noisy toys. Shake them in front of them, make lots of noise, be goofy, then be ready with the camera. They look up and you take the perfect shot :)
Now watch me when my baby turns 10 months........ :)

You have to be very quick to photograph kids that age, and you have to make it fun for them. Try playing peek-a-boo with the camera or making funny noises, or balance something on your head and pretend it's going to fall, sing their favorite songs, etc. Anything to make it fun and make them interact with you.

Well I feel your pain because I have a 17 month old. But I have to agree with Bryn....GET HELP!!! Alot of my pictures now adays are when daddy is holding him or one of his sisters is holding him....if he is not being held I get these kind of pictures..........

When I get those I just scrap them and then journal a short sentence about how he is always moving or on the go ect!!!! :D

I also wanted to add that I take a lot of his pictures now adays at the park too.....I can get him on the slide or the swing and he is occupied for a minute or two and i can snap a great picture!!!! Find some fun "props" and only pull them out when you want to take pictures that helps too!!!!

How about a tri-pod and a wireless remote? I have both but haven't tried either one yet (mine are way older...but I want some of me, and I figured this would be a good way).

and I love the ones Bryn took where he's not looking at the camera. Those are usually my favorite pics. I have to tell my niece all the time NOT to look at me.

Debra, I was going to suggest the tripod and remote, too... but then I realized the age she's trying to photograph and this works best with new sitters (6-8 months) and kids that will hold still...

otherwise, they'll just run out of frame like Yorick does, heh.

ah hah!! I guess that makes sense! LOL! It's been many years since I tried to photograph any children that age!

a piece of scotch tape will occupy them for a little bit, of course they are looking at their hands not the camera... but at least they are still :)

Children can be very difficult to photograph. However, I've learned that candids are normally the best pictures.
It takes a lot of patience. You have to interact with them a ton! Lol. Anything to keep them still. Or try catching them off guard.

I try to shoot pics when he's not paying any attention to me. I'll just sneak up and start shooting. Usually he'll glance up and that's when I'll get a face shot. I shoot a TON! I'd say for every 100 pictures I take, I'll get 10 that are "good" and of those 1 or 2 that are really good.

Ditto this.....I keep my Rebel on "continuous mode" and it nothing for me to shoot 15 pictures in about 10 seconds!!

I found something else that works for my 17 month old. We were out on the deck tonight playing and I had my oldest start blowing bubble and he was mesmerized!! I got tons of great shots!!!!

Thanks so much everyone for all the advice! I'm willing to try it all to get some better pics of him without losing so much hair LOL!

I had to pull this thread back up because I just remembered how I got my favorite shots of Jason at that age. I used to sit him in a booster seat, strap him in, and remove the tray. Then I'd play peek a boo and make faces so he'd pay attention to me. He was so active that without the booster seat I got nothing!
