I had some week-old french rolls that i was going to have to toss out so I decided to try this Paula Deen recipe for bread pudding last night that I've been wanting to make for a while. OH. MY. GOSH. It's so good it'll make you cry!

Ingredients

* 2 cups granulated sugar
* 5 large beaten eggs
* 2 cups milk
* 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
* 3 cups cubed Italian bread, allow to stale overnight in a bowl
* 1 cup packed light brown sugar
* 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, softened
* 1 cup chopped pecans

For the sauce:
* 1 cup granulated sugar
* 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter, melted
* 1 egg, beaten
* 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
* 1/4 cup brandy

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13 by 9 by 2-inch pan.
2. Mix together granulated sugar, eggs, and milk in a bowl; add vanilla. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for 10 minutes.
3. In another bowl, mix and crumble together brown sugar, butter, and pecans.
4. Pour bread mixture into prepared pan. Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over the top and bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until set. Remove from oven.
5. For the sauce:
6. Mix together the granulated sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir together until the sugar is melted. Add the brandy, stirring well. Pour over bread pudding.
7. Serve warm or cold.

I actually even had the brandy from another recipe I tried a while back :p I didn't have any pecans so I used raisins and only 1/8 c. of brandy b/c that stuff was RICH and seriously the best bread pudding you will ever put in your mouth!

Mmmmmmm I haven't had bread pudding in FOREVER!

I've got some left over hamburger buns...think those will work??

I have never in my life had bread pudding, lol! The soggy bread doesn't appeal to me......maybe I should try it though, lol

Has anyone tried her bread pudding made with KrispyKreme doughnuts?!?!?! OMGosh, it is soooo good! Gefinitely heart attack inducing!

Ingredients:

* 2 dozen Krispy Kreme Donuts
* 1 14-oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk (not evaporated)
* 2 4.5-oz cans fruit cocktail (undrained)
* 2 Eggs, beaten
* 1 9 ounce box raisins
* 1 pinch salt
* 1 or 2 teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

Cube donuts into a large bowl. Pour other ingredients on top of donuts and let soak for a few minutes. Mix all ingredients together until donuts have soaked up the liquid as much as possible.

Bake at 350 degrees for about an hour until center has jelled. Top with Butter Rum Sauce.

Butter Rum Sauce:
1 stick butter
1 pound box confectioner's sugar
Rum to taste

Melt butter and slowly stir in confectioner's sugar. Add Rum and heat until bubbly. Pour over each serving of Krispy Kreme Bread Pudding.

It's not exactly soggy bread...i mean it's soft and kind of mushy but not like bread with water on it...i added a little more bread than it called for and cooked it about 10 minutes longer til it was brown and crunchy on top. I'm not sure hamburger buns would work or taste as well..I used really stale/hard french rolls which have a thicker texture. But this recipe is so sweet and that sauce is so rich it definately doesn't taste like soggy bread lol.

so................. moist stuffing? LOL... I'm not really sure on this still ^_^

lol Lauren..you've got my DH and me sitting here for 10 minutes trying to figure out a way to describe it lol...I can't think of any other food to really compare it too...it's basically just a soft/sweet dessert kind of dish...here's a photo and a kind of description :)

and oh my Robin! that recipe with the Doughnuts sounds GOOD :p

Yummy!!! That is the same sauce I use for mine, but I add apples and raisens to the pudding. I'll have to try pecans too :thumbup:

No doubt those are all scrumptious, but there is no recipe that can compare, imho, to the one from the Lazarus kitchens, which was bought out by Macy's, recipe. Sadly due to economics they closed the cafes at all their stores last year, which is so sad :(
It's

bread pudding with whiskey sauce.

Custard Mix

2C granulated sugar
1t. salt
8 eggs
51/2 C milk
1t. vanilla

blend eggs,salt and sugar lightly with wire whisk. Add vamilla and milk. Blend and strain. Set aside.

Pudding
1/2 lb. french bread
1/4 C toasted pecans
1/2C butter,melted
Custard mix, from above

Break bread into medium pieces. Add pecans and melted butter. Arrange in greased 9x13 inch baking dish. Pour custard over bread pieces.
To bake, place the baking dish in a larger pan to create a double boiler effect. Place a small amount of water in the bottom pan. Bake at 350 degrees F. for 50-60 minutes. Test by inserting a knife blade into the center of the pudding (it'll come out clean when done).

Whiskey Sauce
1C butter,melted
2C powdered sugar
2 eggs
2T whiskey

Melt butter. Whip in powdered sugar and fold in eggs. Add whiskey. Serve warm over bread pudding.

personal note: the flavor of the whiskey isn't strong or I personally couldn't eat it,lol. It's been a very long time since I've had this, but it is from heaven.
I'm extremely fortunate to have almost all of their cookbooks.

OMgosh Nikki...I love bread pudding and have been wanting to make one. Thanks for the recipe...it sounds amazing. I know Barefoot Contessa makes one with stale croissants. YUM!

One thing I will do next time is only pour half of the sauce on top b/c it was a little too much. We just had some for dessert again tonight and it was still yummy so it's great reheated :)

ok! Whew! And thanks for the tip about the sauce! the hubby doesn't like stuff that's really really rich, so I be sure to half it for him!

ok! I had this and I took a pic, but don't have it on the computer yet, lol! It was yummy!!!! It was a lot of work though and wrecked my kitchen so I won't make it often, lol!
