Tell me what to read...

I'm a historical fiction NUT....

Phillipa Gregory is good...but don't read the wideacre trilogy...it was her earlier work and just not my cup of tea The Other Boleyn Girl, The Constant Princess, The Queen's Fool and her more recent books are all good, can't put them down reads.

To me the Queen of all Historical Fiction authors is Sharon Kay Penman...her's are a little more detailed than Gregory's but they are by far my favorite books ever and she just released the last in her Henry II/Eleanor of Aquitaine series - Devil's Brood which I'd been waiting SIX years to read lol... I suggest reading hers in chronological order rather than in the order they were written...

1101-1154 When Christ And His Saints Slept (Vol 1 of Henry II Trilogy)
1156-1171 Time And Space (Vol 2 of Henry II Trilogy)
1172 -1189 Devil's Brood (Vol 3 of Henry II Trilogy)

1183-1232 Here Be Dragons (Vol 1 of Welsh Trilogy)
1231-1267 Falls The Shadow (Vol 2 of Welsh Trilogy)
1271-1283 The Reckoning (Vol 3 of Welsh Trilogy)

1459-1492 The Sunne In Splendour

Fabulous reads...lengty and detailed but really my favorite series ever :)

I may have to read these....I love medieval fiction! I love Ellis Peters' Brother Cadfael mysteries...I think I must have lost them in my move to Oklahoma because I haven't seen them since I got up here.

I suggested those too Nikki, Love her books!

One last suggestion - The Kite Runner...50 pages in, I thought I hated it and would never make it through (another book club item for me), but I got sucked in and thought it was an incredible book...
If you liked that book, you need to read A Thousand Splended Suns by the same author. It's even more incredible...though maybe because I read it first. Anyway, it's about what it's like to be a girl/woman in Afghanistan during their turbulent last 20+ years.

I just finished that one as well. She is such a good writer! Even when you know how it's going to turn out she keeps you involved & wondering.

it's definitely on my list...I've heard great things about it too!

If you liked Twilight and the whole werewolf/vampire scifi stuff I highly recommend Patrica Briggs "Mercy Thompson" Series. Ms. Briggs is a awesome writer. The 4th book in the series comes out in Feb. They are pretty fasted paced, glued to your seat kinda books. Here is a link to the first book

Carrie Vaughn also has a fabulous werewolf series. The Kitty Norville Series

http://www.amazon.com/Kitty-Midnigh...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1231789244&sr=1-2

I LOVED the Mercy Thompson series! Can't wait for the 4th book!

I love Jodi Piccoult, especially My Sister's Keeper and 19 Minutes.

Home Before Morning by Lynda van DeVanter, if you can find a copy, is an excellent autobiography of an Army nurse in Vietnam.

I'd forgotten this book until you mentioned it, but I read it maybe 10 or 15 years ago and adored it.

Thanks for the great ideas, everyone! I'm spending a lot of time walking the baby while she fusses, so I think I need to get a few books so I can at least read and rock her instead. At least I've gotten to rewatch some of my favorite Gilmore Girls episodes while I walk her.

For historical fiction my favorite is Diana Gabaldon, but my second favorite is a series by Sara Donati. The first book is Into the Wilderness and actually mentions a character of two from the Outlander series (Jamie and Claire).

For mystery/drama, I like Karin Slaughter. She has two different series: Grant County (first book is Blind Sighted) and Will Trent series (first book is Tripych). I also love Harlen Coben and Kathy Reich's Temperance Brennan series.
