Tell me about cloth diapers

I'm seriously considering it with this kiddo.

Explain it all to me though, because I'm a complete dummy about this.

Like sizes, cost, etc.
 
My favorites were Fuzzibunz.

They are a fleece 'pocket' kind of diaper that you can put in inserts (I used hemp ones) to match the need. Heavier at night, doubled over for boys, etc.

Poop shakes right off. They wash easily, dry super fast. We purchased seconds from the site or from cloth diapering boards - rarely bought them new to help with the price.

I didn't like the all-in-one diapers because they took so freakin' long to dry and were expensive.

Your mileage may vary... truly! You can go super cheap and gets prefolds/covers. Or you can do fitteds that have snaps with covers, All-in-ones (AIOs) that are multi-sized or more ambitiously "one sized" designed to last through potty training. You can use "pocket diapers" that you put inserts in.

I used:
Kissaluv Size 0 newborn with Bummi Super-whisper wraps (this would probably be a $100-200 investment, depending on new/used, how many, etc.) You can then resell these probably, they will go through the first few months and should be in good shape. Both my girls wore these, AND I lent them to a friend who had twins and THEN I sold them. (They were in very good condition, still). I liked them b/c you want a good fit with little babies (runny poop and all).

From 5/6 months through potty training, I used:
Fitted diapers (various brands, about 6-8) with Bummis or other covers (I used some wool covers too).
Fuzzy Bunz and other brand "pocket diapers" for nighttime- you can put extra stuffing in for nighttime. :) (I had 3-5 of these, I think)
Bum Genius All-in-One diapers with velcro- maybe had about 6 of these? Had problems with the velcro, but would probably do snaps next time.

That was it. I bought most of my stash for my oldest (8 yo) and my second wore it (6 yo). I looked at them recently, they are still in good shape and don't smell weird or anything, so I could use many/most of them again. :)

I was impressed by Young House Love and their very minimal approach to cloth diapering... I had way more diapers than they had, but I'm intrigued by the simplicity of what they went with! I didn't think you could "get by" with only a dozen cloth diapers, so I was impressed. :) http://www.younghouselove.com/2012/04/post-haste-2/

I'm sort of out of the loop on prices/where to buy, so can't help you with that. But much of what I used is still around today, I think... personally I would look at All-in-ones and pocket diapers, based on what me & dh liked...
 
We use one-size pocket diapers and LOVE them... we bought mostly used so I have quite an assortment of brands but my faves are Fuzzibunz, Mommy's Touch and bumGenius

I tried All In Ones and hated them for the very same reason that Darcy didn't like them...

We also use hemp inserts... I'm heard bamboo is really good too

if we were to do it all over again and didn't already have a stash prior to having Asher, we would have went with hybrid diapers like, Flip or GroVia.... because we still use paper diapers at night and when we go out since I don't really like carrying a big diaper bag around... and my kiddos are heavy wetters so they can't seem to make it a whole night even with triple stuffing LOL
 
We used fuzzibunz for daycare and night time. They were our workhorse diaper. For at home I used all in ones, but the insert was only attached on one end so they dried fast. And my aios were cute bc the bum was embroidered. Lol. We used cloth before bum genius were around but I think I would have liked those too.
 
I used Fuzzi bunz and BumGenius with my son, along with a few other styles. It's been so long I am sure there's other brands out there that is as popular as FB and BG were when I got cloth for my son, like 4 yrs ago (eeek!).

I loved it, and I saved all of my cloth diapers for future babies. It's not a lot of work and it's worth it :) I did turn to sposies when my son turned 2.5 because of his height no diapers fit him properly anymore. He's so tall.

Vanessa - nope - because fuzzibunz seriously do not hold onto poop at all :) That was one of the coolest things about them!
 
I used cloth diapers and would again if I were to have another baby. I LOVED AIOs and really didn't have a problem with drying times. Loved FuzziBunz too. Loved my wool covers/shorts. Worth the money for sure!
 
one last question, do you have to buy special laundry detergent or can you use like dreft or ivory free?
 
I'm using All Free and Clear, but I plan to make my own when we run out of it. We bought it for his clothes and it's "safe" for cloth diapers. No repelling issues so far, so we'll see. Rockin' Green is another popular brand of cloth diaper detergent.

We're currently using a combination of BumGenius 4.0's, and prefolds with Thirsties Duo covers. I also have a FuzziBunz Elite that I randomly won off Facebook that I really like.

Cotton Babies is currently running a Buy 5 Get 1 Free sale on their BG 4.0's, so I bought more of those last night. They also randomly have clearance/seconds sales on BG's, which is how I got some of my limited pocket stash when I was still pregnant.
I got my prefolds from Nicki's Diapers and they have a few other brands that I'm going to try based on some other recommendations from friends. I'm going to try Rumperooz, Blueberries, and Grovia's All In Ones, and then grab some more FuzziBunz Elite's.

We're currently still using disposables overnight, and when we travel. Our parents aren't necessarily keen on diaper laundry at their houses, and I don't really want to cart all that stuff along for a weekend either.
 
I use Rockin' Green... but I've also used Tide Free and Clear


I used to use All Free and Clear and had TONS of repelling issues and build-up issues... Sorry Col, but I do not believe it should be on the list of safe detergents... and I'm not the only one who feels that way... have had tons of friends have build up issues
 
Oh and dreft is definitely NOT safe for diapers and I don't think Ivory clear is either... one that you can get at the grocery store that will work is Tide Free and Clear... I've heard mixed reviews on using any Free and Clear detergent... some have had great luck with it but others have had bad luck with it... which is why I only use it if I've run out of Rockin' Green and forgot to order more... I actually like the Rockin' Green so much that I've considered using it for my regular laundry since we all have pretty sensitive skin.

also, if you buy brand new instead of used... be sure to check the cleaning instructions from that brand... some of them are soooo specific about what you can use and if you don't use the ones from their list it voids the warranty.

we love rockin green! I use it on my husband's vibram shoes since it's the only thing that will take the stink out. I've used many detergents on my cloth diapers and it's the only kind I recommend!

I have a sprayer and personally I love it. I even use it for spraying puke out of clothes or sheets too. it's wonderful, and I wouldn't use cloth without one.

I also recommend bumGenuis as well. I would stick to the snaps though. my Velcro always wore out within a year. my snap ones never had issues and there's the added bonus of my kids couldn't get them undone. they could the Velcro ones...

I'm like you and don't love doing laundry but I didn't mind doing cloth laundry.

Another side note is I've done cloth with both standard washers and HE washers. I never figured out how to get my diapers as clean in the HE washer as they seemed to in the non -HE washer. I wish I hadn't switched to the HE...
 
I also didn't use a sprayer... when the poop is runny and not really "ploppable" (kwim?) I find that it doesn't typically stain and washes out very easily. Once they start with solids it is easy to just hold it over the toilet, turn the diaper upside down and plop it in. (I think that at a certain point I had to grab a wad of toilet paper and used that if they were sticky- if that kind of thing would bother you, then maybe a sprayer would be good!) Honestly, though, the sprayer idea sort of freaked me out, I worried about airborn particles of poop going everywhere. But I had friends who used them & liked them, just not a necessity. :)

If I have #3 I am seriously tempted to just do the dozen BumGenius 2.0 thing... since it worked for Traci too. :)
