Swine Flu!

Oh man, there are some confirmed cases near us now (in Massachusettes) only about 20-25 minutes away... and apparently my little brother, Randy was diagnosed with swine flu just this morning. I haven't been around him in a while, but my brother, Ryan, has and he was at our house just last night! I'm not really freaked out because I know the swine flu isn't as big a deal as people have made it out to be- apparently it makes you feel yucky for a week and then it's gone, right? But I'm having a c-section next week so should I worry? My brother absolutely loves my son, and they play and horse around everytime they see each other, so should I worry that my son might get the swine flu? If he gets it, do I have to stay away from him, and I'll more than likely have to keep the baby away from him, then too, right?
Argh! Why couldn't the stinkin' diagnoses have been yesterday morning?! So annoying! I wouldn't normally care about it really, but with being pregnant, having surgery, and having a newborn.... com'mon! Why now? :thumbdown:

I think if I were you, I'd call the OB to see what he/she recommends.

We've also been exposed, but didn't catch anything. We were also told that it's mild, just very communicable.

Good luck! :)

I agree with Rochelle. Give your OB a call to see what they think you should do. As for your brothers...they need to stay away for a while so that you don't get sick--no matter how "mild" they're now saying this thing is.

Thankfully I think you and your son will be fine!!! I remember reading that the swine flu liked "good immune" systems (think healthy men and woman age 25 to 45 :D) and since you are pregnant your immune system is lowered and your sons would still be immature. But it's a good idea to mention it to your OB anyways!!! Good luck and tons of "healthy vibes" comming your way!!!

I would ask your doctor but not worry too much Lukas had chicken pox and we were worried about the baby but the hospital (they always do my maternity care because of the problems I have) seemed to think we were insane for being concerned. Hugs Crystal xx

Thanks ladies :)

I got to talk to my OB today and she said that if I don't show any symptoms by the weekend I should be fine. But if I do, I'll have to get the test- they don't let people with a virus get surgery- but since I have to have a c-section (I've had one before so I need one again) they'd have to do it anyways. I don't think there should be any problems though... I was able to talk to my brother and he said he hasn't really been around our little brother (who has the swine flu) for a while since they've both been in school and he's been working a lot- so he doubts he'll get it. Apparently the rest of the family is already showing signs they have it while he doesn't at the moment (though I feel bad for all of them, and for him because chances are he'll end up with it too in a couple weeks)

The sad part is, their doctors put them on "quarantine" so they won't infect anyone else- and since I'm having a baby next week, it'll be a couple weeks before they can come and visit us :( But it's better than getting anyone else sick

Lots of P&PT that it doesn't spread. I can imagine how your pregnancy add such a different level of anxiety to the situation. It sounds like your doctor gave you really good advice. Please keep us posted {{{HUGS}}}

Rachael, I just went through this at my house. You don't want to get the Flu at all, swine or otherwise. Your pediatrician can prescribe Tamiflu for your son as a preventative measure. I don't think you can take it, but your son and husband (or whoever was around your brother) should.

Susan

PS - My son is on it now.

Here is hoping that it doesn't infect your household!!
