Swine Flu - WTH

I think I can say I live the closest to Mexico compared to most that post here regularly. My cell phone actually switches over to the Mexican cell service at my parent's house because the border is so close to their house.

I am not worried.

according to the news report I saw, there are 13 confirmed cases in Canada. Ontario - 4, Alberta - 2, British Columbia - 3, Nova Scotia - 4.

My parents are only a few miles from the BC border... didn't realize it was so close to home. I haven't been paying too close attention to the news about it because I get really annoyed when they rehash things over and over. I figure, unless there are confirmed cases near me, I don't need to worry and just take normal precautions as usual.

However, I do feel sad for those effected and hope a vaccine is created soon.

Question about the death percentage... is that 7% of those who actually come down with the swine flu or 7% of the population? That's a big difference. lol

The other thing with the 7% is how can they actually know at this point? They are making an educated guess based on insufficient information. They can only estimate how many people have actually had swine flu in Mexico before this weekend. Many people may have have had it & not reported it because "it's just the flu" or it was a mild case. Now they have people thinking back and saying "oh maybe I had it" but it's too late to test, so are those numbers part of the illness to death ratio?

I think "they" are tossing out a lot of information to be seen to be doing something and 'keep people informed' but even 'they' admit the situation is evolving & they don't know the full picture yet. Most of the world is not prepared to deal with a new disease on a large scale. We only have meds that mostly treat it, no cure & no vax & at this point it's already spread to Europe, the Americas and Australia & NZ. They have to tell everyone something so they can keep a populaton, that gets news updates every 5 minutes, calm. I think any long term stats, positive or negative, at this point should be taken with some doubt.

It is their own immune system that turn against them and shut down the organs

See this is what scares me - my 8 year old dd has an autoimmune disease. I already have to worry about every little bug that goes around. Even a "normal" illness is a big deal. Its a catch 22 - do you want to know way TMI and worry yourself silly (thanks to the media) or be ignorant and happy.

Actually they were saying that people with stronger immune systems will suffer from it more. Since it's a new and different strain, stronger immune systems might "overcompensate" (for lack of a better word), and end up turning on itself. That's why the 25-40 age set is most likely going to be more affected than the very young and very old. In the other thread that Jenny posted, Annie posted a link to the term, I can't remember it.

Just keep doing what you do every day to protect your DD Cindy. Wash hands, cover mouths, etc etc. There really isn't anything else you can do.
