SWINE FLU INFO

I guess I don't know what the difference is between everyone else posting their opinions on the flu issue and Lizzy posting hers?

She's not attacking anyone anymore than any of the others posters are.

So, whats with all the drama?

I dont' think any of the other posters were attacking anyone. Lizzy is the one telling people to stop posting because their concerns are bothering her. I don't feel that anyone in this thread panicked or did anything remotely like attacking other posters except for trying to figure out why Lizzy was getting upset.

*waves white flag whilst singing dido*

jenny, they were just alarmed cause i put on my angry eyes. lmao. really, i'm not mad that people are concerned i just got annoyed cause it's becoming redundant...even when positive light is shed. in any case, i'm over it. i didn't mean to diminish any real concern out there.

Swine flu forces Texas HS officials to halt sports

By JIM VERTUNO – 18 hours ago

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) — Texas officials on Wednesday postponed all public high school athletic and academic competitions until May 11 because of the swine flu outbreak.

The move suspends the baseball and softball seasons and eliminates the regional track championships that were to start Friday, said Charles Breithaupt, executive director of the University Interscholastic League. He said league officials acted on the recommendation of public health officials.

"The health and safety of our student activity participants is of the utmost importance," Breithaupt said. "Taking every possible precaution to prevent the further spreading of this disease is an important contribution to the welfare of our great state, and altering the schedule of our events is a way to keep our participants safe."

School officials say 53,000 students are out of school due to concern over the virus, and dozens of schools were closed to be sanitized.

The state golf and tennis championships are scheduled to begin May 11.

The state track meet, one of the largest high school track and field competitions in the country, has been extended from its normal two days to three and is scheduled for May 14-16.

All UIL academic competitions, including a state meet that was to begin May 7, were also postponed and will be rescheduled later.

With 16 confirmed cases of swine flue in Texas, Gov. Rick Perry announced a disaster declaration Wednesday for the entire state. The declaration will allow officials to begin emergency protective measures and seek reimbursement from the federal government.

Ft Worth - a major school district here in North Texas - closed schools for EVERYONE - personnel included - until at least May 8 for 1 confirmed case and 3 probably cases.

2 confirmed cases now in a county near me. The area I live in has a lot of people traveling back and forth to Mexico on a daily basis, so it's a little more concerning now than it was a week ago. We shall see. :)

True, but this child is a Mexican citizen who traveled with his family to the US, and was likely already ill when he got here.

Yeah, I didn't realize that at first! I don't know why they wouldn't announce that right away when they first reported his death...

There are "3 possible cases" close to home for us, I'm waiting to find out if they're actually confirmed or not- there's 1 in Albany, 1 in Schnectady, & 1 in Washington County. We're about an hour away from Albany so I'm a little concerned about that one!

Obama said something like it's like closing the barn doors after the horses are already out... because we have cases here already. I'll find the article with the exact quote.

Apparently he kept Bush's speech writer ;) lol

I think not closing the border is like watching your sink overflow onto your floor and saying "Well no point in turning the water off, the floor is already wet."

My dad just sent this to me, and well... I thought it was funny. LOL

Dept of Health Swine Flu update - please avoid the following activity...

Here's the thing...do they track the regular "seasonal flu" like they have been tracking this one? I mean..isn't it just as contagious and surely if it were tracked like this one and splattered all over the news it would show that it spreads just as quickly right? I mean I have no facts to back that up but all flus are contagious..right? I know when I was teaching EVERY year we would have a period of a few weeks where TONS of students would get sick with the flu and it would go through the entire school until it finally moved on. I can remember one day where out of a class of 29 students I had like 15 absent with the flu and about 10 more went home that day with it. (Including ME lol)

And so far, other than the poor little Mexican boy, the cases here have been mild to moderate...they just stated on the news that most cases have been mild and many recover without even having to visit their doctor. I haven't heard any reports but how many of these US and other international cases have had to be hospitilized? kwim? That's the stuff I want to know...yes it's spreading, but how bad is it really..the actual symptoms?? I know I know..it could mutate blah blah blah..but isn't that true of ANY flu??

It's serious..but sometimes these day I feel like we're TOO informed a lot of the time kwim?

LOL@Sara!

I've had two people send that photo to me today (because I'm coming down with bronchitis). I was at the doctor this morning and the nurse asked me if I had been in contact with swine. I'm sorry...it was all I could do to not burst out laughing! The first thing that popped into my head was not the flu but some flippant comment about men. :D

I will say that I am being more diligent about hand-washing than I have been in the past. I'm also carrying around a little bottle of hand santizer. I think it makes my co-workers feel better, which isn't a bad thing.

So it's school vacation in NH this week and my son knows of one girl he sits right behind that is in Mexico right now. I have no idea how many others may be there. My thoughts are that anyone who comes home from Mexico should stay home from school until the incubation period is over and they have shown no symptoms of the flu. I realize that we have better medical care than they do in Mexico and that is why there are so many deaths there but I still don't want my kids to get sick if it can be prevented. The govenment has decided that instead those kids can go to school but have to check in with the nurse frequently. I am not panicked but yes I am concerned.

There are 13 probable cases in WA, with the majority of them right here in Seattle. Three schools have been closed. One of the infected is a pediatrician. Thus far, only one was confirmed to have a tie to Mexico (a recent traveler there). Conclusive results on the tests have not been confirmed. My husband is a school teacher, so this definitely concern me.
