summertime bedtimes?

do you allow your children to stay up later in the summertime?

i'm a lot more lax about bedtime in the summer, but i still want them in bed at a reasonable hour. my children normally go to bed about 745/8 during the school year and by 9 in the summertime.

Ella's is 7 pm every night no matter what lol. She may not fall asleep for a bit but she is in her bed.

During school Avery was also in bed by 7 pm but he was allowed to read or sometimes watch a little tv so usually he wasn't asleep til 8 pm.

I have relaxed that some for the summer...most night's he's asleep by 8:30..last night he was up til 9:30 but that's b/c we were out until nearly 8.

my younger sons bedtime is 9:30 on school nights. He does not go to the busstop until 9:00 or it would be slightly earlier. My older son (he is almost 18) does not have a bedtime anymore. Typically he is asleep by 10:00-11:00 though school or not. Summertime is alot less stringent on bedtimes for them. But they are also older (14 and 17 almost 18). They typically only get 8 or so hours of sleep.

During school, Arthur is in bed by 8 PM, no matter if it's winter or summer ! He may not fall asleep for a bit but at least he's in his bed ! He usually falls asleep around 9 or 9:30 PM, depending on how full his day was at school ! ;)

My kid has the same bedtime... 7:30/8:00. He won't always go to bed right away, he will goof around in there... ;)

I have to be more lax on summer bedtimes because our boys have no shades in their room and it's still light until past 8:00 even now. (Long story on the shades, don't get me started!)

Our kids have always gone to bed later than most- during the school year we start bed time routine at 8:15- 8:30 and they are in bed by 9. During summer we will probably start betime routine around 9 - 9:15. They always watch one TV show in our room and then read books with DH.

my kids currently have a later bedtime (8pm) than they did in the winter (7pm) b/c i just kept them going to bed at the same time and don't adjust for the time change when we did daylight savings time. but - i can tell that they are getting tired at night earlier the past few weeks due to the outdoor activity/swimming/etc so i will probably move bedtime back towards 7:30 pm (or even 7 if they need it .. ) - plus, they start camp in july and it begins at 8 am, so they will need to get up earlier than they do now (right now my oldest sleeps until 8 ... youngest is up at 7).

Our bedtimes will stay the same! Our girls are in bed by 7:30... though the older two stay up and read for a bit. If they would sleep in, I wouldn't mind them staying up a little later (except really, it's for me to have some quiet hours before bed and time with dh)... but they don't sleep in and need good sleep, so I like them going down the same time.

DD (turning 11 this summer) has no set bedtime in the summer. Summers are short here and we both take full advantage. I do work early in the a.m., so we are both usually asleep by 10 at the latest but it's not set in steel. I work from home so we don't have to worry about her getting up early to get to daycare, etc. While I work she spends her time on or in the lake and running from neighbor to neighbor (we have a lot of summer resident camps on our lake, and she's friends with a lot of the flatlanders' kids who come up for the summer). Summer is very loose here, and we spend our evenings outdoors until dark so no set bedtime.

Our bedtime was 7:30 for the longest time. Ian's current meds schedule has forced us to set it back to about 8:30. That's already pushing into my "me" time more than I like, so we definitely won't be changing it for the summer. :)

We follow the same bedtime year round, even on weekends. The only difference is that on nights that aren't school nights the boys are allowed to watch a movie once they get in bed... BUT they have to be in bed no later than 20 minutes early.

We try to stick to the same bedtime year round. Summer doesn't mean my boys need fewer hours of sleep. That said, they're going to my mom's for a month and all bets are off with her.

I'm worried about that too. The boys got off school last Wednesday and Zach has been there since, Ryan just went Sunday, and they'll be there the next two weeks. She does make them follow a bedtime, but she believe summer bedtimes should be later. Both my boys need x-hours sleep and are hard to wake so we keep them on the same bedtime year round so that school mornings aren't a huge hassle.

Exactly, Trish. I'd be ok with a later bedtime if they slept later in the mornings. Devin's already getting up sometime between 4-6am these days and that's with an 8pm bedtime. He actually wakes earlier the later he goes to sleep.

Landon always goes to bed at 9pm. That boy is a schedule keeper so it is just the best to leave it the same all year around. I am hoping to move it up to 8- 8:30 when school starts though. We shall see.

Nope.. b/c they still have to get up at the same time to go to daycare.. so they're still going to bed at 8 pm.

We do the same. Liam's out by 8:30 in the winter and usually around 9 in the summer. The evenings are just the best time to be outside!

My 7 year old gets to stay up 30 minutes later (until 8:30) on weekend nights, but for now I have no plans to extend that to summer weeknights. Mostly because it's easier to do the boys' bedtimes together. But we'll see--he has to be woken for school every morning, and this summer he only has morning activities 2x a week. If he's sleeping later and having trouble falling asleep at night, I may change his bedtime.

My younger 2 may be changing to earlier bedtimes, but not later. It depends on naps; Ben is going to have to give his up this summer because he starts K in the fall. His nap is usually only 30-45 minutes, but he really needs it. I'm dreading when I have to stop it.

He sounds like Ben. Ben is in bed by 8, asleep by 8:05, and awake around 4:30. He sleeps only a bit later when we put him to bed later (ie, being put to bed an hour later leads to him sleeping 30 minutes later), and an earlier bedtime means he's up at 3 for the day or wakes at midnight and is up for 2 hours.

Mine usually go to bed about 1/2 hour to an hour or so later in the summer, mostly because I'm not so "GO GO GO Get ready for bed! You have school tomorrow!" like I am now LOL. I just let them putter around and go.

The other thing is, for us, it doesn't get really warm until mid-July, and it's over again by late August, so I like for them to get as much outdoor time as they can. So I don't rush them to bed, but I still like my me time! LOL

My girls go to bed at 7:30 right now (they are 6 and 8), Benjamin is 10 and goes at 9. I may reassess the summer bed time once they are actually out of school, since they are a bit older now.

So are most of your children not involved in evening sports activities? We have ballgames 3 to 4 nights a week right now - softball for my older dd and t-ball for my younger dd. With that, most nights we don't even get home until after 8:00 so our usual 8-8:30 bedtime is impossible. They've been going to bed around 9:30 most nights by the time we get baths taken and bedtime routines done. It's later than I would like but with activities, it can't be helped through the month of June while ball season is in full swing. We'll be back to 9:00 at the latest come July though. :)

My kids are up at 6am no matter what, unless they are up at 5:30am. So we don't mess around much with their bed times. During school they go to bed about 8-8:15pm & during summer we let it slide a bit toward 8:30 or so. They are 7 & 8

Some special nights, like July 4th they stay up until 10 or later & on vacation it might be 9. But they just end up cranky the next day & I hate dealing with it, so it's a rare thing.

We don't do evening sports due to the early wake up thing. We tried it last year, hoping they'd be tired & sleep in but it never works that way. They get up even earlier & then fall all to pieces about 4pm. It's ugly

My brother had to be home (back from friends' houses, etc) by 8 in the school year, but usually didn't fall asleep until 9:30/10. During the summer, he has to be back by "dark" which is around 9/9:15, but because he's played so hard and he's exhausted, he still falls asleep around the same time...

I don't do many activities with the kids in the summer. They run around like crazy all winter, so summer time, we play outside, go to the beach every day we can, parks, a bit of camping. It's nice and relaxed.

We have done skating school in the summer, but I'm going to leave that until Amelia is older, she keeps asking me, but I've paid for her to skate til mid-June and go back again at the beginning of September, and *I* need a break from the skates myself LOL

I let me son stay up about an hour later in the summertime, so he goes to bed at 9pm...If I let him he would stay up all night...

my 10 yr old normally is in bed by 9-930ish and I try to get the 2 little ones there between 8-830 {and that ususally doesn't happen!!!}....but Ben doesn't have to get up until 745 am to get breakfast and then to the bus so he gets plenty of sleep and even though I get Abby & Peyton up and dressed at 545 am, they sleep all the way to daycare in the car {45 mins roughly}...but I do have to say that the late my kids go to bed, normally the later they sleep in...on the weekend they normally sleep until 8-830ish in the mornings unless they went to bed super super early! On weekends and int he summer they don't have a set bedtime :) Unless I need to get homework done and need the peace and quiet!

Luke's bedtime is 8:30 during the school year. During the summer it depends on my mood. LOL Normally it's between 9 & 930 though.

I usually send my 2 to bed at around 9 in the Summer, otherwise they get up and up and up asking to stay up, which doens't make sense LOL!! ;)

Jack who is 9 and a half has been known to stay in his friends garden a few doors away until 9.30pm a few times last summer :p

My daughter is 10 and she gets maybe a half hour extra in summer, depends on her attitude. She's a kid that needs a good 9-10 hour or she's a grump. She goes to camp in the summer so she gets to sleep a little later. She walks to camp with my son since he works there so they don't have to leave until about 8 or so. My son is 17 so he doesn't have a bedtime. He has to be in by 11pm/midnight though, depending on if he has the car since teen drivers have a curfew in our state.

no way...I'm the meanest mom ever!!! My kids go to bed at 8PM during the school time and they are in bed by 8PM in the summertime!!! They DO NOT sleep in....no matter how late I let them stay up and I'm not gonna lose "my time" just so they can stay up an extra hour and be grumpy when they get up early the next day!!!

Now if were are on vacation or go to the drive in or are at a "family function" (ie: away from home), then they usually get to stay up later. But normal everyday bedtime is 8PM!!!

Nope. Only my oldest is old enough (7 years old), and he hasn't wanted to be on any teams yet. I'm kind of happy about that since DH works too late to help out and taking my 5 year old DS to anything in the evening is a recipe for disaster. He's just too tired by then, and he acts it. In the summer both boys go to camp 2-3 days a week and we try to go to the swimming pool on the other days, so by the time evening comes they just want to relax at home.

Nope, it's not changing around here, except when we have special activities or have to go out - 1 or 2 times a week. They are tucked in/lights out at 7:30. My boys are 7, 5 and 3.

I have a son with ADD and I really need some quiet time at night. And they never sleep in when they go to bed later, they manage to even wake up EARLIER!

During the school year, Rachel's bedtime is 8pm...730 if she's being really whiny. I'm trying to stick with the 8pm rule during the summer, although if we have a late tball game it's more like 9. And if our family movie night runs late on Saturdays, I'm okay with that. I figure it'll be easier to get her up for kindergarten if I don't have to totally retrain her body clock in August.
