I just realized that the sales tax around here has gone to 9% (from 8.75%)

(obviously I don't pay attn to news or current events)

Oh man...really? lol - I don't pay attention either. I just know that I shop at the Costco out of town b/c the sales tax is lower then in the city lol.

Our sales tax is 5½%. Personally, I preferred NJ's tax. It's 7%, except on necessities (clothing, unprepared foods, medicine, household paper products) and in urban enterprise zones where it's only 3½%.

Ours just went from 6% to 6.5%. The extra .5% is for the schools.

2 months later they tried to pass a levy increase.

That went over like a ton of bricks. :glare:

Where I am from it is 10% on everything, groceries included, because there was no income tax for the longest time (they have IT now)...then in the Army we lived in GA...there it was only 4% woohooo! and not on food. Here in Ohio I'm at a happy medium....7% I think and not on food. It is difficult to see your money pilfered away, huh?

Ours went from 6% to 7% on April 1st so that the property tax bill could be pushed through the legislature which prohibits property taxes on a house being raised more than 1% a year. In addition, the restaurant tax here in Indy went up to 9% on April 1st. The extra 2% is for the building of the new football stadium which the Colts are praying will be good enough to gank us a Superbowl in the next 5 years.

I worked for the IN General Assembly while they were in session this year, so I actually knew all abt the property tax/sales tax bill way before everyone else. I'm totally not into politics, but it was cool to have the 'inside scoop' on such a monumental bill.

MD is @ 6% (went up from 5% at the beginning of the year).

NY does it weird. The state sales tax is 4%, but then each county or city can add taxes. Like NYC is 8.375%, but Utica, NY is 9%.

Apparently in Sept of 2007, they issued year round exemptions on clothing and shoes. BUT not all counties or cities participate (it wasn't a mandatory exemption I guess.

Ours is 9.5% over here. We pay some of the highest sales taxes I've heard of. I've often wondered if anyone was higher..lol.

Yep, like I said in my parish it's 9.5% but in the capital city it's only 9% and I know it's different in other cities too. I'm in Louisiana by the way.

We are at 8.25% here in Los Angeles. The rate was increased in 1994 after the Northridge Earthquake. They promised it would go down....yeah right!!!!!!!!!

here in Canada, we have a Goods & Service Tax of 5%, payable on all products, except certain essentials such as groceries, residential rent, and medical services, and services such as financial services. This is a Nation-wide tax.
We also have Provincial Sales Tax in all provinces (except Alberta, no PST there), here in BC it is 7%. Goods to which the tax is applied varies by province, as does the rate.

So, based on where I live ... I frequently cheat for shopping and cross the border into Alberta (the border is about 10-15 minutes from my door) to do the majority of our shopping, because there is no Provincial Sales Tax. Or if we are doing really big shopping trip (Christmas shopping) and our Canadian dollar is good, I cross the border into the US and go shopping in Kalispell, Montana. heheee
