Speaking of kids... do you ever hide from them?

LOL! One of my moody teens is driving me so nuts that I'm literally hiding from him in my bedroom with a Swiss Cake Roll (the last one that I knew he wanted... I'm terrible.)

This is so much better than watching him huff around and correcting him for sassing me.

oh my goodness... this makes me laugh because I'm SO about to do this! I told them to leave me alone for a little bit and my oldest came back seriously 1 minute later. So I'm going to lock myself in my room. ha :)

Yup what Brook said, I tried this yesterday and one by one they all came looking and wondering why i was sitting on MY porch relaxing!! I said for PEACE geeshhh!!!

Valerie, for my 11yr old when he huffs around I warn him once if he keeps up I warn him a second time, the third is ok you will know your punishment tomorrow! I usually take away, video game, computer, phone or Netflix time these are all his faves and he's left guessing what will be taken away ;)

The weird thing with him is that he seems to enjoy pushing me to the point that I have to punish. Like one time I told him he was grounded from the computer and Xbox for the rest of the day and he said, "How about the rest of the week?" To which I replied, "ok. Works for me!" Then he suggested it be for a whole month at which point I decided to end the entire discussion, lol!

Seriously, what is up with that kind of response? This is our adopted kid who has so much baggage that he still baffles me at times.

My big walk-in closet is one of my favorite places. If I sit in just the right spot, the kids can't find me even after they open the door to the closet and look around. You're smart to take food in with you. :)

Oh Lydia - I LOVE you!! And am so happy that you have that perfect spot :)

Yes - definitely do this! And so glad to know that I'm not alone! Somedays I go down to the basement to feed the cats - and end up taking 5-10 minutes to just sit on the couch and veg. I love it!

You make me smile big smiles, Erin.

My kids are older, there's no hiding, but I've definitely been to the point where I've said "You need to get away from me." Or done the "What?! What?! What?!" ( not my finest moments admittedly )

I usually sent the kid on a wild goose chase... tell him to go find Rupert. But that doesn't happen often. I just need to go into my room and I'm pretty much by myself until J wants to play on the DH's ipad which is charging at the side of the bed. Most of the time I'm looking to find where he is at and he is usually in his bedroom reading or in the school room doing school work or coloring... :) Since I was an only child and he is too... we are very much alike that we need "self" time.

You are amazing!

When I've had enough for awhile I tell my kids "You will have to play nicely with each other because I need a break so that I can be a happy Mommy". It usually gives me 10-15 minutes of them playing nicely together before they come in to give me hugs and ask if I'm happy yet because they are lonely for me. They are still little, so it's about as much as I can expect, and they will usually keep playing well together as long as I'm in the same room, so I can sneak in some more reading or something.

I would love to, but if I leave my middle kid alone too long (5-10 minutes if he's involved in an activity, 2 minutes if he isn't) I never know what disaster I'll come back to. Normally the kids have their screen time right before dinner, but the days I really need a break I let them have half of their time earlier in the day.

i wish. and it's not for a lack of trying.
master bedroom closet.
garage.
pantry.
behind the dining room door.
in the shower with the door closed.
sometimes this mama just needs like 167 seconds to herself.
BUT. sadly it's not in the cards for me.
as my boys appear to be part bloodhound and always manage to track me down.

I totally did today for 15 minutes before I made dinner. My girls totally freak out and start crying if they don't know where I am or even if they can't see me cause I'm behind a shut door. So a 15 minute break is an awesome feat for me!! :)

I don't need to hide from mine. I tell them they can watch a bit of TV, and they can't leave me fast enough. Haha! Then I sit down at the computer and scrap till they're bored of TV. Which is almost never. :D

That's my son, he does the exact same thing that's why I give him a chance to shushhh it & following through is the always the hardest so I make sure the punishment works w/my days schedule.

YES! My husband will see me getting frustrated and tell me to go hide for a while. LOL There aren't a lot of places where the kids don't find me though. My favorite hiding place is the place they always look last... but if I 'hide' there I end up falling asleep. LOL I love to hide in my bed. :)

I sometimes "go to bed early" to get a break. :) Sometimes I actually do go to bed, sometimes I just hang out in bed.

I take extended bathroom breaks. Sometimes it takes him 30 seconds to find me, and sometimes it takes him 5-7 minutes, but it's usually long enough that I can just sit on the vanity and think/refresh/read for awhile. Pure bliss.

I'm also lucky in that mine falls asleep about 2 hours before me. I'm supposed to work during that time, I tell myself, but usually I just end up playing games, scrapping, and listening to music while he snoozes.

LOL, yes, I've done this one too! Great hiding spot. Granted my kids are older now, so less hiding is required, but they are still remarkably needy sometimes. I must hear "Mom, look at this" 300x/day.

I had no idea this was a common phenomenon! I can't recall ever hiding from my kids ... even though there are probably instances where it would be totally appropriate. I'm pretty good about just telling them I need some space and typically they oblige me.

I have friends who can't relate... Most of them get plenty of breaks from their kids (either the kids are older, go to school or daycare, or are frequently at a friends house) or have children with a much different personality than mine. :)

I never 'hid' from them when they were little. I would just say, "Mom needs a little break." and it was no big deal. But this one boy of mine is so difficult and will come to me over and over again to pick a fight. I used to send him to his room when he got really sassy with me, but he would FLIP OUT and I found out later than his bio dad was a very angry man and every time Jake would upset him he would yell and make him go to his room.

OHHHH. Now I get it.

So I don't send him to his room anymore. I just can't bring myself to do it. He has enough bad memories as it is w/o me triggering him.

For me, it's not that I can't relate, my coping mechanism is just different :D My youngest is relentless. I'm convinced he's going to be a successful adult for this reason, since he won't take no for answer, but from a parenting standpoint, it can be frustrating. I stayed home with the boys for about a year when they were younger, so I've experienced both SAHM and WOHM. I probably would have been driven to hiding at some point if I'd continued to be a SAHM :w00t:

LOL!!! Driven to hiding is EXACTLY how I see it. It's not like I want to get away from them. It's just all I can do sometimes to get my head cleared. :) It's for their own good. ;)

I keep thinking about this thread, I just want to make sure I didn't offend anyone! I don't want anyone to think I was insinuating that taking time for yourself is a bad thing! I have a lot to learn when it comes to parenting. I'm definitely not the most patient person, although thankfully I'm more patient with my kids than I am with adults :D Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, lol), by nature I am very direct, which can often times lead to less than optimal communications with my kidlets ;)
