So I've been hearing this....

...crazy ass loud sound everytime I go outside lately. It sounds almost like electricity in the air or something but I couldnt figure out what it was for the longest time. Well today I narrowed it down to a sound coming from a tree in my neighbor's yard and wouldnt you know it, upon doing research, it's a fleet of cicadas singing so they can freakin mate! Apparently they love mesquite trees - I havent seen any bugs or anything but just the thought of them really icks me out.

Anyone else have these little singers in their area?

Oh gosh, Robin - I love the sound of cicadas. That and the ch-ch-ch-ch sound of sprinklers are the two quintessential sounds of summer for me.

Yep, we have those bugs here too ... I think of it as one of the sounds of summer too. In fact, I always used to think it was the electricity lines buzzing when I was younger until I learned better. :)

I haven't heard any around here this year but a few years ago we had a major major cicada year...they were so loud you could hear them from inside. It was crazy!

We had them in the DC area a few years ago....you couldn't walk ANYWHERE without seeing them, stepping on them, and hearing their lovely mating calls...LOL

I don't think I've ever lived anywhere they like to be but last summer we were in the DC area aparently after cicada season and it was so gross... dead ones everywhere. Those things are huge!

Ewwwww. Don't like them. They're yucky and LOUD!!!!! I was so frustrated one night because they were especially loud after we went to bed and I couldn't sleep!! I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to get them to stop!! I fell asleep eventually, so I never did come up with a plan. LOL!!

Yuck! I am terrified of those things! Our dog brought one in the house a few weeks ago, I was freaking out!

Try looking at it this way. They don't come back every year. It lasts a relatively short time. They don't want in your house and stay in their trees nor do they want anything to do with you, lol.
You might consider some white noise in your bedroom to focus on instead of them and get some sleep.
Yes, they're ugly, lol. I had a cousin when we were kids, that loved to pick up the molted shells and chase me with them

This cracked me up! Our old neighborhood they were SOOOOOOOOOOO LOUD and I mean loud...that they were louder than the window air conditioner in the bedroom...and when we got central air...they were still louder. They would drive me nuts when I tried to sleep at night and had to play music during the day just to drown them out! Thank goodness <knock on wood to keep up the luck> that when we moved to this neighborhood they were not loud enough to hear inside the house!

LOL...alll very very good points :D

This is so funny. I've always thought they were one of THE sounds of summer. I don't mind them at all. We also used to collect the little shells when we were kids. I didn't realize that their noise bothered people so much. Maybe I live in an area where they are not quite so thick?!?

We had them where I grew up but I haven't heard any here yet....but we have the rest of the wild life here to make up for it

We use to have those where I grew up in Canada! I use to go around and collect their shells from the trees after they had shed them.. lol

Ugh. That would drive me nuts! I hate repetitive sounds for long periods of time. Well, unless I'm listening to Kenny or Dierks sing to me... LOL!!!

I hope they move on to greener trees for you soon Robin!

I havent seen them but bugs creep me out LOL And by everyones reactions I hope I NEVER see them LOL

You know it is going to be a hot day when the cicadas are buzzing at 7:45 in the morning.

We like to take the exoskeleton (when they molt) and put them on our shirt. Kinda freaks people out because it is usually a complete exoskeleton and looks like the real thing.

Yes, I am a mom to boys and grew up with 3 brothers. I do gross things.

I love the sound of cicadas and grasshoppers and crickets too!! It's just one of those things that really says "summertime" to me. I wish I could listen to them in the evening, but it's so humid here we have to keep our windows closed and the AC on. Hopefully, for you, they will move on.

I'd swap with ya for a little while to get away from the sound of crickets. For some reason I can NOT sleep through their "music" , lol though they definitely do say summertime.
