sleep aid alternatives...

I don't have any issues sleeping. I fall asleep as soon as my head hits the pillow and sleep like the dead. My husband on the other hand has been struggling with sleep issues for going on 10 years now. He doesn't have difficulty falling asleep, but rather, can not seem to stay asleep. He wakes up countless times during the night which prevents him from waking up feeling rested.

I got him a LectroFan a couple of years ago, which has really helped a lot, so instead of waking up 15 times a night it's down to just 6 or 7 now. But surely there are other ways to help?

He's been on several of the prescription sleep aids over the years ... all of which were a horrible experience for him [nightmares and side effects galore]. He's tried melatonin but like several of the prescriptions, hated how it made him feel the day after taking it. He also said it tended to give him anxiety fueled dreams.

I recently read that magnesium can be helpful... but have found that is available in both liquid and tablet form and am not sure if one is better than the other?

I'm sure lots of people battle this problem and am hoping some of you will chime in and share your experiences. What has and hasn't worked for you.

I would have him see a naturopath. They have many natural ways to aid sleep. One of them is essential oils. My husband uses Young Living oils, and there are several options there too. Lavender, Rutavala, Cedarwood etc. A great site I use to find testimonials of success with oils is www.oil-testimonials.com.

I've been reading up on those too, Jacinda. I know absolutely nothing about them but would like to learn more. thanks for the link!

My only experience with this is my 10 year old takes ADHD and depression medicine. Both of which give him terrible insomnia.
He started taking "catapres", which is working great. Melatonin and oils didn't work for him. :/

I use essential oils as well...in our house we use Serenity which is a blend by doTERRA. My hubby even starts up the diffuser at night because he knows they help him sleep better.

poor kiddo. I've never heard of Catapres. is it a prescription?

so do where do you guys buy your oils from? online?

I'm a doTERRA Wellness Advocate (mostly just for the discount :p ). If you are interested, PM me and we can chat. I can also send you a sample if you want to give it a try before you commit to purchasing a whole bottle. :)

This sounds exactly like my hubby too. He was a shift worker for 20+ years and still cannot sleep. Like yours he can go to sleep easily, but once he wakes up, that is it for the night :( He just got melatonin to try but so far no help. I hope he isn't feeling side effects through the day though, that isn't something I knew about.

magnesium is awesome for lots of things... liquid is going to absorb faster, but I have good luck with a good quality pill, too. I typically use Eniva products - Dave used to be an partner with them, a few years back... now he just sells their awesome multivit on amazon. :)

I see they have a sleep aid now... I've never tired it... http://eniva.com/natural-sleep-16-oz/

Has he had his thyroid check? Insomnia could be a symptom...
