So how long is shortening (the Crisco stuff) good for once it is opened?

b/c I just bought a 6lb can. I was Costco and am not planning to go to a regular store . . .

yeah, I'm going to try making cupcakes again . . .

*lol* I thought this thread was going to go somewhere else like you wanted tips on shortening YOUR lifespan! I'm so glad this is a post abt Crisco.

lol, when I first read your title for this thread I was thinking..something must have happened to shorten her lifespan (like a scare or something), lol!

As for the shortening...I have no idea, but what they said sounds right. I've always been able to tell if it's looking icky.

GL with the cupcakes!

ROFL! I guess I should have just said Crisco.

so i checked Crisco.com and I guess it's one year once opened. I'm kinda thinking that I won't be going through 6lbs of Crisco in one year . . . however maybe I will replace Crisco for butter in all my baking recipes as they suggest. Not that I bake very much.

I hope you guys are right about it being obvious when it goes bad. I'm afraid I won't realize . . .

The only thing I use shortening for is when making green-onion pancakes. Yum! though so bad for you...so I haven't made them in years lol.

Shortening is great in buttercream frosting/filling. I have a huge thing of it from Costco that I use all the time.
