Shadowing Tutorial

Ok, when I look at my gallery I feel like my drop shadows are just ok. Then I look at everyone elses' galleries and I realize my drop shadows just plain suck. I need to learn more about how to make my LOs come to life.

I pretty much use the same setting on all of my shadows...

Lighting Angel: 120 degrees
Size: 5
Distance: 5
Opacity: 75%

What do yall use for your settings? If you have any tuts that would be helpful, I would love to see them.

Thanks ladies :)

I use a lighting angle of -45 and opacity set at 75%. I change the size and distance all the time depending on what it is and how far "off" the page I want it to set.

If it's something transparent, then I change the opacity so it isn't so dark. Or if it's stitches, I usually change the opacity on that to about 25%.

I do all my shadowing by hand (except for papers). I don't think mine are phenomenal but I love them and think they look greast printed!!

One thing I have started doing is I use to leave all my shadows varying degrees of black/gray, but I have since changed to "coloring" them. Like if my background is blue then I'll choose a deep deep blue for my shadow color. I've noticed that has up the "reality" of them greatly!!!

I think Megan (mturnidge is her username) has a great tutorial. I saw it at another site but I bet she has it posted on her blog!!!

That's a great tut Megan! Thanks so much for linking it!

This is something I need to work on also. I've started playing with the warp shadow feature in CS4 on strings and things that need to pull off the page. But I need to be bolder with my sizes and distances according to my elements. Just a few examples really lets me see what can be done pretty easily with a few adjustments! Now I can't wait to get home and scrap. lol

That is a great tut Megan. Thanks so much for sharing that with me. I love the examples, that is a huge help. I just need to be a little bolder when I scrap :)

I've found that a distance and size of 5 px is too small... especially once you're printed your pages. So, my shadows would seem pretty drastic compared to yours. hehe

Here's a tut at DSA: http://digiscrapaddicts.com/forum/showthread.php?t=882

Great tutorial, some good tips in there even though I use PSPX2
Can you post something here when you post the one about the strings, I can never get that warping thing to look right, the more I play the more yucky they look

I posted one for PSE... which does NOT have the ability to warp... so it might not really apply to you. I do have CS4 now though, so I could do a CS4 shadowing tutorial later.... :)
